Problem between Xfinity and this modem/router

Seemed to work fine for a few days. The Xfinity supplied Motorola modem/router had kept rebooting several times a day, and that is what iinitiated purchasing my own modem. After about five days with the N450 modem, my computers/printers/tablets though connected to the modem (wireless and hard wired) would not stay connected to the internet. Xfinity sent a tech to check the lines, and all was well, with very minimal noise. They replaced a splitter at the road, and said everything was fine, and easily within the norms. The N450 had numerous update errors with Xfinity. DOCSIS 3.0 relies on Motorola supplying updates to Xfinity, and Xfinity forwarding the updates directly to the modem. Apparently Xfinity was sending the updates, but after the modem received the updates, it was unable to find the update so it could not update itself. This happened 5-8 times per day. As far as I know, Xfinity may have been sending the wrong modem updates, but this is something the end user has no control over, and most of the tech people you will talk to at Xfinity have no idea that Xfinity is the one that updates the modems. I returned this modem/router and purchased a NetGear AC1750, and aside from the speed increase, the uptime dependability has increased exponentially. The NetGear has had NO downtime as of yet.. I am giving the Motorola N450 two stars, only for the ease of being able to return it to Best Buy. The entire return process took about two minutes. Without the Best Buy return experience, I would have given the N450 a ZERO star rating on its performance if possible.

This is a great product. Light years ahead of the cable modem Xfinity rents to you. Xfinity recently "upgraded" my modem and it was a nightmare. Mucho hours with tech support only to have them tell me the problems were in my TV/PC/cell phone/tablet when I had no problems with the old swapped out modem. I did some research and chose to order this. I'm glad I did. When I hooked up the Motorola, I planned on going through setup purgatory. Turned out it was easy. I turned on my PC and went to my browser. Voila! There was the Xfinity activation screen. You have to be patient here. As you go through the screens and answer questions, you'll see the modem restart a few times. Sometimes it seems to hang. Just hit "Retry" when the Motorola's lights are all normal and you'll get to the next screen. All in all, it takes about 5 minutes to be up and running. Don't forget to reset the modem's network, ID and password settings. Another thing that's nice is that this modem will pay for itself in 10 months and after that I'll have $11 bucks extra in the bank each month that would otherwise have gone to Xfinity's modem rental fee. A winner all around!!!

So, I had a debacle with this modem/router that had absolutely nothing to do with the product itself, which I'll detail below. The product itself is amazing, works like a charm for it's purpose--two CPUs hooked up via Ethernet cable get 200+Mbps. WiFi is consistent, but we have Comcast, so how consistent could it possibly be, anyway. However--speaking of Comcast--be very aware that if you call them to have an agent set it up for your internet service (it's a Comcast certified modem/router)--they may turn you down and tell you that it's not available for use per the model number, or that it's not actually certified at all--that's what I was told the first time I called. I had to call twice to get an agent who knew what they were doing and who took care of it for me, it's all set up under Comcast and we're looking to return our provided Modem with no issues, continuing to use this one. So just know if you have Comcast, be prepared to deal with the potential issues that may come with that, but otherwise, it works great. 5/5 anyway, because it details specifically how to hook up this router/modem onto specific cable services in the manual and everything. It's a great router, just an absolutely terrible cable/internet company.

      Specifications are Incorrect

      MG7315Fail

I purchased this Motorola MG7315 N450 because I no longer wanted to rent a modem and router through Comcast. This is advertised under specifications as having a Wireless Standard Frequency Band of 5.0 GHz. Both Amazon and Best Buy list this as a specification for frequency band. After setting up my wireless access, I was disappointed to see it has the standard 2.4 GHz and no 5.0 GHz option. After much troubleshooting, researching, and reading the manual I discovered the MG7315 model does not use the frequency band 5.0 GHz and only uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. For more information on this see the Motorola DataSheet. http://www.motorolacable.com/documents/MG7315-DataSheet-04116.pdf Page 2 > Specifications > Wireless Networking and Security > 2.4 GHz - 2.484 GHz frequency range

      Very Happy

Initially, I refused to by Motorola because I was not happy with my previous purchases of their products. I purchased ARRIS instead at about $40 more and experienced range problems in a small one bedroom apartment from the moment it was installed. In addition, I had to keep resetting it because the speed kept going down to almost 0. My network kept disappearing from the list of the available networks almost every 20 hours. Their tech supports were quick to respond, eager to help and took their time with me and even educated me. Although I rate their tech support excellent, there was nothing that could have been done. I kept changing my network channels but it seemed like that I was going to continue to have either the speed or the loss of my network or range issue no matter what I do. After calling the tech support two more times I finally gave up. I returned my Arris and replaced it with this Modem at $40 less and have not had any of those problems for the past 5 days. This makes me believe that's the way it's going to be and I am very happy with my purchase.

After years of paying the cable company for a WiFi Router I found an opportune time to reduce my cable bill. Living in a rural area with very limited over air TV options. I was in a position to sign on to a cable option with no 2 year commitment that included internet. The Motorola - N450 was one of the options I considered for a WiFi Router. I chose this because of the Motorola name and it resembled the units I had from the cable company as well as being a more updated model. After purchasing the unit I carried it into the local cable company office and they registered the equipment for my account. Went home plugged it in and was up and running in a short time. One month no problems, and I will break even in about 7 or 8 months versus paying the cable company.

Works Great Why Did I Wait So Long

I am very happy so far with my Motorola modem/router. It works just as good as the Comcast router I had. I'm so tired of being spanked by Comcast with them raising the internet service price twice in one year. At least this will save some money a month. I experienced some trouble with trying to transfer my old SSID settings which is an option. I ended up creating a new SSID and then reconnected my devices. Everything works great so far.. Activation process was easy. I bought a Netgear router because it was cheaper but returned it because it gave me connecting troubles. I basically had no trouble connecting with my Motorola.. Im very happy with the purchase

I researched this and for $100 I could not be happier with my purchase. It removes the monthly ISP fee for using their modem, while consolidating a modem and router into one unit. It does not get hot, nor has it even hiccuped with all the downloading I do at home, on multiple devices all at once. It has a good range and I have had zero issues over the past month of purchase. Only downside is in order to keep it so cool, it has a perforated chassis which allows the LED lights to "leak" out on the side. The lights create a Lite Brite effect on my wall, in addition to the forward facing lights. Not a huge deal, but if you want to have a dark work area, then you will have to place it in such a way as to not have it bothering you.
