    It does what it’s supposed to and it does it quite well. Getting the camera running is very simple just like all of the other Nest products. Plug it in, scan the barcode, connect to WiFi, and you’re done. Installing this camera to run off indoor power is another story. Fortunately, I was installing this outside of my garage, overlooking my driveway so I was able to sneak the wire through the vinyl soffit and power it from the same outlet as my garage door openers. Others may not be so lucky depending where you install the camera. Do note that you should make every attempt possible to power this from inside your home. I am not sure what the point of having it powered outside would be as it can then be easily disconnect or stolen. If you are having a hard time with finding an indoor outlet and a place for the giant AC adapter, you could always get a POE adapter/splitter and forego the Nest power disc… Now onto the Nest camera itself. I am getting great video quality, the audio is a nice feature, notifications and motion capture works wonderfully. 24/7 recording is a breath of fresh air compared to the Arlo cameras I use inside my home. They do a decent job at capturing motion, but I have had a couple missed events. The wife didn’t want me running wires so the Arlo system worked out nicely in terms of being able to hide the cameras away. To be honest, I don’t want 24/7 video of the inside of my home being pumped into the internet anyways. On the outside, I want 24/7 video, and you should as well. There is a lot of information that leads up to an event and a lot that happens after an event… The Nest Outdoor cam has great build quality and works just as I had hoped. Daytime footage is perfect while nighttime is something to be desired. I am getting a ton of glare/interference from the IR LEDs. I believe this is from the IR light being reflected off the nearby gutter and wall. I need to try repositioning it to see if it goes away. Also, you can use the digital zoom to crop out any interference and the exposure will be readjusted. The only real downside I can think of is the data usage. Most broadband service comes with a data cap nowadays. So be mindful of how much data you are consuming with these. If you are a heavy hitter with streaming content, a couple Nest cams may put you over the edge. In terms of video quality vs data usage: Low = 30gb/mo, Med = 120gb/mo, and High = 300gb/mo. For those complaining about having to pay for Nest Aware, think about what you are getting for a measly $5/mo or $50/year. You are getting continuous 24/7 recording with cloud storage of 1080p video for 5 days, smart notifications, etc. If something was to happen, you are going to know within 5 days and you can download & save all the video you need. Alternatively, you could buy an IP camera, build a decent computer and buy/run BlueIris which would work just as well as the Nest setup. However, at that point, you are already at least $500 into managing 1 camera and all the maintenance & support is on you. In retrospect, $50 or $100 per year isn’t really that bad for what you are getting. Keep in mind, you are essentially paying for the convenience of not having to set up and monitor a security camera yourself. Would it be nice if Nest allowed access to the private stream so that you could use BlueIris to store the 24/7 stream locally? Yes, I would like nothing more. However, Nest is a company, and the goal of any company is to make money. (To some degree, you can do this, but it’s pretty poor since access to the RTMP stream was removed from sharing.) All in all, I am pleased. Before buying these, you should do your homework and know the limitations & requirements of utilizing the Nest cameras.

    Great camera - terrible cable design

    This, like Nests indoor cameras, has an outstanding quality image and the recordings are very nice to have. The paid service to save your history is a bit overpriced in my opinion so you may want to pick and choose which cameras you subscribe to. The unit itself is well built quality wise, the camera is easy to mount and aim and stays in place well with the super strong magnet that holds it. However, the cable design is absolutely awful. You have 25 total feet of cable, in two 10 and 15 foot sections. And right in the middle of these two sections is a huge round blob/block that connects the two. Hiding the cable is a little difficult since its thick, so thieves could easily see it and cut the cable or just cover their face and cut the cable right at the camera itself and then have no issues. The big round block is so big it stands out like a sore thumb, inviting thieves to simply unplug it and then they are no longer on camera. And it's also so big that putting it inside of a standard electrical box is the only real option you have to hide it... aside form having it hidden behind the wall outside which could be a code violation. I believe it needs a safety cuff around the cable at the camera that is coated with something that can't be cut, there needs to be a screw or similar to make it stay attached to the magnet and the cable design needs to be completely redone by someone who knows what they are doing. With that said, the quality is excellent both night and day and having quick and easy access via the Nest app anywhere is really nice. Mine alerts me when packages arrive, the mail is here, people come to my yard etc. I would give the installation a real serious going over and consult with your electrician before buying this product, especially if you have a window inside you can simply place one of the indoor cams in to see outside. That exposed cable is just too much of a security risk, ironic since its supposed to be a security camera.

    So Easy and Very Good

    I bought 3 of the Nest Outdoor Cameras, after having my car (in my driveway) broken into. They were extremely easy to put up for a DIY job. So far, these little cameras have out performed my expectations. Installation: it is very simple. My house is wood, so I only need to drill screws into my wooden house to hold the magnet plate and the wire plastic cord hangars, which is to secure the power cord to the house. Camera Setup: extremely easy. You only need to download the app on your smartphone and have an account setup. You take a picture with your phone of a QR code on the camera itself and its a step by step online process. Extremely easy. You do need to be careful to make sure do this inside your home--close to your wifi station. Once setup is complete then take the camera outside and make sure your wifi signal can still reach your camera. You might need to get an extension cord so you can plug it in and power on your camera. You can look on your phone to see if you are getting a live picture. If you don't get a signal then either you need to move your camera into a new location or get a wifi extender. Nest Aware Service: This is the recording and notification service that NEST offers as an option. It is not needed, but I would highly recommend trying it for 30 days for free. Once you try it, you definitely want to use it. It notifies you in notifications and or emails--to let you you know that the camera has spotted something or has heard something near your camera. You can set up "zones" so the camera will only notify you if something comes in that zone. You can also set up times that it will or will not notify you. Nest Aware is an additional cost---10 day (of history stored) or 30 day (of history stored). And its all stored in the cloud--so you don't need a storage device. After my 30 day trial is over, I will go with the 10 day option for all three of my cameras which cost me a total of $200/year (for all three--$100 first camera; $50 for second camera; $50 third camera----for the 10 day service option). However, this service is not needed but definitely is suggested. If you choose not to get the service then you can only watch live---not notifications or recording options. The Cameras: are simple to use and very good quality. You can also change the quality if need be, due to internet speeds. Night capabilities are ok but no the best. You still need a little light to see with. If you need more light, then a porch or outside light will go a long ways to see a lot better. The cameras do not move electronically. You have to manually set the cameras and they stay in that position until you move them with your hand again. But they have such a great wide view that they can see everything---so you really don't need to move them at all once you set it the first time. The two negatives: you have an ugly cord coming down from the camera and its not the easiest to hide in every situation. I used my gutters to hide the cord coming down the side of the house. You can also use some paint, to camouflage the cord coming from the camera as well to help in blend in as well. The second negative can be seen as a positive----the power cord is meant to plug straight into an outlet---which is great (positive). However, technically someone can come and unplug your camera if the plug is easy to get to (negative). Personally, I have a small crawl space with outlets, so I took my cords through my foundation vents and plug them into an outlet. This keeps people from easily unplugging my cameras. Overall: excellent camera, super easy setup and installation, and great options (no service, 10-day, or 30-day) for Nest Aware. The service allows for a lot of extras like notification, set time and space parameters, and the ability to record at least up to 10 days. Plus the Nest app makes it easy to do all this and to watch. Its actually becomes addicting to watch (I must have a boring life!). If you still aren't sure, buy one camera and see if you like it. They are a little pricey, but I can see why. I'm glad I bought them.

    I purchased these cameras based entirely on the good reviews here. My experience was quite different than most. Setup was straightforward. I have one camera installed in my backyard, the other on my front porch. Both cameras go offline very often and for extended periods, like anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes at a time. Sometimes they won't come back online at all without going out and physically unplugging the power cord to reset them. Calls to Nest Customer Support were worthless, unless you like spending an hour on the phone with a barely English-speaking script reader. Assuming that maybe my wi-fi signal was the issue, I spent three days troubleshooting. I even called my ISP and upgraded to their top-tier 250Mbps service. I also bought a Linksys wi-fi extender for another $100. The backyard camera is only 20' from my indoor router (a barely 1-year old LinkSys) and the wi-fi signal app I have on my smartphone says the signal is strong. I placed the wi-fi extender literally on the other side of a window where the front porch camera is installed - it is located only 3' from the front camera, separated only by a pane of glass. That signal from the extender is off the charts strong. Yet both cameras continue to drop signals and go offline. I've tried everything suggested in their myriad of troubleshooting guides, relocated them, even swapped their positions. Nothing is working. Even if these cameras are going offline due to signal issues (which I don't believe to be the case) why do they stay offline for 45 minutes?? And why won't they reconnect on their own with my having to unplug them? At this point, I don't believe these cameras could establish and maintain a wi-fi connection if I glued them to my router. Very disappointed, considering their cost and mostly positive reviews. I'm returning these to Best Buy - I hope you have better luck than I did.

    Nest Doesn't Disappoint

    This is my third Nest security camera. I have two indoor cameras. On top of that I have 5 Nest Protect smoke/CO alarms and a Nest Thermostat. I enjoy those products and this one is no different. Yes, the camera's power cable is exposed, but if you follow Nest's recommendations and be smart about it, then this cable should be hard to located and cut. I don't want to have to worry about batteries. I need my camera to work 24/7 without fail. Setup was a breeze. A lot easier than I thought. I was able to mount the camera under an eve and route the power cable neatly to the power outlet thanks to the cable clips. The strong magnets hold everything in place and allow for easy adjustment of the camera as well. Adding the Nest Cam Outdoor to my account was just as easy. I was up and running in less than an hour. The video stream is clear. The night vision is spectacular, as it lights up my entire front yard, which is decent sized. I love the new eyesight feature, being able to scrub through the day very quickly. I also like how it detects people and shows you a thumbnail. Overall this is a great camera and adds a lot of value to my home automation system. Yes, it costs money for 10 or 30 days of video history. I'll gladly pay the $200/year for all three of my cameras if it means the safety and security of my home and family. If you want quality service, you need to pay for it. Bottom line: if you love Nest and their indoor cameras, you will love this as well. No more pointing an indoor camera out the windows for me.

    Excellent Security Camera in Many Ways

    This is an excellent camera in many ways. First, it is very easy to set up. It literally takes a couple of minutes to add a camera, after an account is set up. It takes only a few minutes to set up an account. The difficult part is the physical installation of the camera, as with any camera. This entirely depends on the structure, network range and power source. This applies to every camera in the industry. The Nest is still a wireless camera, and therefore no need to run an ethernet cable. Nest has made the installation very easy by including the hardware and instructions. Their customer support is excellent. They have an excellent app for iPhone, Android, and can connect from PC as well. One feature I really like is it sends a notification alert and an email by indicating "noticed some activity". If it sees a person, the notification changes to "spotted a person". BTW, it even records audio and you can have very clear conversation with the person, if you choose to do so. The video clip in the email shows a zoomed in picture of the person. You can then go to the video, clip it and save it. To view the video history, after free 30-day trial, you have to subscribe to their service at $10 per month, $5 each additional camera. You can also save by paying for the entire year (pay for 10 months, instead of 12). The Nest subscription is well worth it. If you don't want to spend money on the subscription, no problem. You still get an activity notification, and still, can monitor live video. You just can't access video history and don't get "spotted a person" notification. I have researched other cameras. I even bought a Samsung from Costco and ended up returning it, after wasting about 5 hours just to connect the Samsung camera to a network. I am glad I didn’t install the camera outside first. The app and instruction for the Samsung were terrible. The Nest camera is the way to go. They have other Internet of Things (IOT) products, for wireless connections, including thermostat, etc. I have not used any of these myself, yet. They are truly professionals in the IOT industry. I highly recommend the Nest camera.

    Great outdoor HD cameras

    I reviewed MANY systems, and ultimately got the Nest Outdoor Cameras. I bought 2 to start, been having problems in the neighborhood lately and wanted to safeguard my property. I am very tech savy, however, setup to your wi-fi is extremely easy using the Nest app on my iPad and reading the barcode on the camera. Physical installation was easy, but getting up high on some extension ladders may be difficult for some, however, they do offer installers that will come out and do it for a fee. I was up and running in no time, and playing around with the settings and app for about 1 hour made me instantly purchase the 10-day history subscription which is well worth the price! $10 1st camera, $5 each additional per month. This allows 24/7 surveillance and 10-day history on their servers in the cloud. You can easily make clips and download them to your PC and share them via email, FB, text, etc. Needless to say, I went back the very next day to add a 3rd camera. Now I've had them installed for less than a week, loving them so much I'm buying a 4th and my entire homes' perimeter is covered! 2 second delay on popup notifications I have set for zones, on iPad you can view a quick 2 sec clip right from the popup! Features go on and on. Couldn't be happier! Night vision is good, but if it's completely dark it goes about 20 - 25', if there is ambient light from street, house, or parking lot lamps, then night vision increases on both quality and distance. The daytime recording is excellent on quality, however, don't expect to be reading moving license plates or getting great detail of people's faces from 50' away. If someone is on my property though it sure does nab them with great detail. The only thing I don't like is the Nest app occasionally locks up on my iPad Air 2 while I'm scrolling through video footage history too fast, I've learned if you do it smoothly and slowly it doesn't lock up. I can't wait to see any new features they may add to the software and or firmware updates on the cameras. Hoped this long review helps someone decide.

    Camera is made well. Very "Apple-like". Interface is ok. Picture during the day is ok. But for me a few deal stoppers. 1- Wireless requires not just a signal, but a really good signal for 1080p. I can get a mid bar strength at my outdoor locations, but Nest says its a weak signal and the cameras keep dropping offline. 2- bandwidth of having more than two cameras on the same wireless access point. I set up a different wireless network just for my security cams. I have ATT Gig service, so its not the pipe, but I rarely get the full 30fps. 3- Admin interface for a Paid Service should have more options for an Advanced User. Fine to have a basic interface for basic needs, but I would prefer a text overlay, and some other typical security settings as in FPS etc if I am going to pay $200-250 per year on 3-4 cameras. 4- Night picture I always found very "muddy". And in the day, the leaves on a tree or bush seem to mush in a blob. I have used other security cams in the past with Blue Iris or Security Spy software and have not had as much of an image quality issue. Short of it is, my 4x cameras are going back. I will look at POE wired solutions. Wireless, and the limited interface settings on a paid service, are a deal killer for me. Others it may work great, but not for me.
