One Day
Adapted from author David Nicholls' critically acclaimed novel of the same name, director Lone Scherfig's One Day stars Anne Hathaway as a principled working-class girl who forges a unique bond with a wealthy jet-setter that spans two decades. July 15, 1988: Emma (Hathaway) is about to enter the real world. An idealist from humble upbringings, she dreams of making the world a better place for everyone. On the night of her graduation, Emma (Hathaway) meets Dexter (Jim Sturgess), a wealthy flirt without a care in the world. Dexter is also graduating, though unlike Emma he looks forward to a future of comfort and privilege. By checking back with Emma and Dexter every July 15th for the next 20 years, we experience their happiness, hardships, and heartache as they strive to live out their dreams, and find meaning in a world that's constantly changing. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    Interesting idea, dull movie

Emma and Dexter graduate from school and then end up at her place for what could’ve been the beginning of a whirlwind romance or a one-night stand but ends as something of a near-miss with them deciding to remain friends. Emma (played by Anne Hathaway with an absentee accent that comes and goes with no real mention) is an aspiring writer from a humble background. Dexter (played by Jim Sturgess of 21 and Across the Universe) is the son of wealthy parents with whom he has a difficult relationship. Through many years we see Dexter (Sturgess) go from a television personality who’s despised even by his fans to a man with no career who takes a job at a restaurant in the hopes of moving up the ladder in the organization to make a living for his wife and child. Meanwhile Emma (Hathaway) spends most of that time working in a Mexican restaurant and involved with a man she doesn’t love but who loves her dearly. And for a large portion of that time in her life, she and Dexter are not speaking despite being each other’s best friends. While Sturgess is believable enough as the uber-cad who gets by on charm until that gives way substance abuse and boorishness and Hathaway is fine save for her accent, the story isn’t very interesting and the ending left me annoyed and confused and maybe more than a little aggravated. This is not really what one looks for in unadulterated sap.

    Great movie, bad blu-ray discs

    • My Best Buy® MemberMember

From what I have seen of this movie, in bits and pieces, more than once, until giving up, and finshing it on movies on demand, it is a great movie!!! The only problem I've had is with the blu-ray discs... I purchased one at best buy, and attempted to watch it, but barely got very far into the movie before noticing a bad audio problem. The problem was so bad that I couldn't even watch the movie, so I chalked it up to being a bad disc and exchanged it for another one. Upon watching the second disc, which was much better than the first, I discovered further into the movie that it too was a bad disc. I know for certain that it is not my player, as any other disc in it works fine, so could it be bad luck, or a bad production run? Just a word of warning to others, if you run into a bad disc yourself, there are more than one.
