Genre: Comedy, Mecha, Action Length: 7 episodes "Drunk drivers are bad, but put a drunk driver in a giant robot called a Labor and you've got a disaster waiting to happen. And when REAL criminals get their hands on those same giant robots, the cops need giant robots of their own just to maintain the status quo, right? That's the logic behind the development of the Patlabor program and special Labor Crime units like Japan's Section 2, in any case. But what logic fails to take into account is where to find police officers who're equally conversant with both robots and the regulations? That's where the motley crew of Section 2, Division 2 comes in! With ridiculously perky tomboy Noa Izumi and gun-happy madman Isao Ohta as primary Labor pilots and the impossibly laidback Captain Goto in what passes for command, SV2 is ready to hit the streets with their twenty-ton feet! But will they be taking a byte out of crime or have they bitten off more than they can chew? The law of the land and the laws of robotics are about to collide in the first Earth shattering collection of MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR!" Patlabor is one of those old-school classics thats name has been around for decades. The basis of the story is basically about a group of misfits that somehow became police officers and have been assigned to use the latest giant robot mechs, Labors, to uphold the law. The OVA here is more comedy than anything else except for episodes 5 & 6, in my opinion. You could call it good, clean fun. No blood, men's backsides but no women's. Don't even remember any cursing. The artwork is definitely old style. Being such an old series, the Blu-ray looks quite nice although it's hard to compare to newer programming. The newest style of Labors that SV2 is using are extremely reminiscent to those of Macross/Robotech and Tekkamen Blade. Surprisingly, the mechs aren't the star of the show. Perhaps they would be if the pilots didn't have a few screws loose! I love how on the back of the box they list the entire time-line for Patlabor. The OVA series #this one# is the first followed by the 3 movies. The actual TV series is on a different time-line and is followed by "The New Files". Hopefully this means that Maiden Japan will be re-releasing the entire collection as I know the TV series is coming out in July as well.

I bought this after watching the three Patlabor movies, and while it isn't as great as those, it's still pretty enjoyable. It's worth the money. Naturally, this is very '80s-tastic, so you're in for a treat.
