Pearl Harbor [60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition] [2 Discs] [DVD] [2001]

Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale are war-torn lovers in director Michael Bay's epic reenactment of the 1941 tragedy Pearl Harbor. Buena Vista has done a great job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer (spread over two DVDs). All aspects of this picture look great, including even colors, dark black levels, and natural-looking fleshtones. Aside of a small amount of edge enhancement during one scene, this is a fine-looking transfer that should please fans. The audio is presented in DTS 5.1 Surround, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French, as well as an English 2.0 soundtrack produced for those listening with headphones. The Dolby 5.1 and DTS soundtracks are very full, featuring continuous use of surround sounds throughout the entire film. Bombs and explosions rocket around the viewer through most of the film's running time. All aspects of the dialogue, music, and effects are distortion-free. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. This two-disc Pearl Harbor set, while not jam-packed, includes a few well-produced extra features. Two documentaries, "Journey to the Screen: The Making of Pearl Harbor" and "Unsung Heroes of Pearl Harbor," are both extensive and very informative. The first documentary focuses on the making of the film, which includes interviews with stars Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and most of the main crew. The second feature takes a look at the real Pearl Harbor and includes interviews with survivors from that awful day. The second documentary is easily the more impressive and moving of the two. Finally, there is a music video by Faith Hill for the hit song "There You'll Be," a short promo for National Geographic: Beyond the Movie -- Pearl Harbor, as well as a teaser and trailer for Pearl Harbor. This is a nice, if insubstantial, DVD edition of Pearl Harbor.

Synopsis

Pearl Harbor
At the time of its release, this lavish period war drama from hyperkinetic director Michael Bay became the most expensive motion picture ever green-lighted by a studio. Ben Affleck stars as Rafe McCawley, a military pilot stationed under Jimmy Doolittle (Alec Baldwin) in New Jersey, along with his best friend from childhood, Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett). Rafe is chomping at the bit to get involved in World War II, but America has not entered the conflict, so he is forced to fight on loan to the Royal Air Force in Britain, leaving behind his beautiful girlfriend Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale). After Rafe goes overseas, both Danny and Evelyn are transferred to the naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where word arrives that Rafe has been killed in action. A grief-stricken Evelyn and Danny become romantically attached, a situation that becomes a lit powder keg when Rafe suddenly reappears, having survived his ordeal in the European war. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor puts the romantic triangle on hold, as the best friends are ordered to undertake a top-secret and highly dangerous retaliatory mission to bomb Tokyo, once again under the command of Doolittle. Although the trio of leads are entirely fictional, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight (as FDR) co-star in the roles of real-life historical figures. Pearl Harbor is based on a script by Randall Wallace, writer of Braveheart (1995) and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998). Taking a page from the production history of James Cameron's Titanic (1997), many of the actors and filmmakers involved with Pearl Harbor deferred their usual salaries until the film "broke even" at the box office. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

    great war and date movie

michael bay is one of the best if not the action director of our time, or ever. every movie he does is epic in its own way and is huge at scale. the special effects in this movie are unbelievable and the explosions are massive. theres a half hour battle that is truly one of the best in cinema history. ben afflek does an okay job playing rafe. josh hartnet does good playin rafes best friend. everyone in the cast gets the job done for the most part. this movie is just as epic and huge as every michael bay movie. the camera gets insane and adds the intensety needed. i thought there would be more random slo-mo moments with the heroes because bay has done that in every big movie of his:armageddon, bad boys, and most of all Transformers wich i did review but didnt end up on this web site for some reason. anyway, pearl harbor may not explain everything behind the politics of the war, but what we get is delivered in the most proffesional way possible. some critics said that there was little or no politics told about the story. uhhh...theres about an hour spent at the white house in this 3hr movie(with president roosevelt brilliantly played by jon voight). i didnt care for any of the random scenes with the enemy planning the attacks, though, but who cares about the very minor flaws, meaning:old war movie cliches, and very little political reasoning. michael bay is one of the few directors thats has inspired me to become a movie director . but overall, this is one of the best ww2 movies in recent years and i cant wait for transformers 2.

a disgrace to those who served in WWII

Despite eye-popping work on the Pearl Harbor attack, this film feels more like Star Wars than Saving Private Ryan and, as a result, is disgraceful to those who served & died in WWII. When our boring, wooden heroes take off in planes to combat the Japanese attackers, I'm surprised they didn't start to belt out the Star Wars theme the same way Peter Griffin did in "The Family Guy"'s Star Wars episode. Instead of a poignant story of the 1941 fateful attack at the titular location, we are instead given a lamely written love triangle involving three uninteresting people. Why? Because apparently that's what teenagers want to see as we can't have any movie with Ben Affleck & Josh Hartnett get a R rating because it would turn away the all-important teenage demographic. God forbid, this movie should have the brutal honesty which has been a hallmark of great war films like Patton, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Glory, Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers, and Letters From Iwo Jima.

All hype but not worth it

Alot of hype about this movie, but it wasn't worth it. Michael Bay is usually good at movie magic, with plot, CGI, and shots, but this one wasn't his best. The only part of the movie that was good was the 20 minute scene when Japan sent the bommers, but after that it fell short. Three hours of story that had nothing to do with Pearl Habor, it was like watching the Titantic. You know what was gonna happen, but it took to long to get it. And when it finally happened, there was nothing else to do but find a way to end.

I heard a lot of negatives about this movie not being historically accurate. i went to Pearl harbor and listened to the stories of what really happened, everything in the movie was spot on from that aspect, just different people in the roles of what the two lead characters did in the movie. This is a must watch every December for our family

I believe that Pearl Harbor is one of the greatest war movies. I thought the story was great because you get a great sense of how particular lives were effected by the Pearl Harbor attack. That really engaged me into the movie besides the awesome action! Being born and growing up in Oahu, Hawaii, I have so much more added respect for the film. Overall, Pearl Harbor is an superb film, pick up a copy.

I saw the movie on big screen several years ago when it came first to movie theaters and liked it a lot. I liked the story, sound, and the score by Hans Zimmer. This is one the most beautiful scores by Hans Zimmer. The Blu Ray disc is also very good and comes with outstanding picture and sound. Best Buy price was really good. Highly recommended.
