Films that concentrate on aviation & airplanes are rare, so it is a joy to see one that gets all the background material correct. In "Planes" the aircraft fly and manuever just as real planes would. And many of the characters are clearly patterned after real, historic aircraft. El Cupacabra is clearly a Granville Brothers Type R racer, and Franz, the flying auto, looks like the Aerocar designed and built by Moulton B. Taylor. The idea of a cropduster becoming an air racer is a classic "underdog succeeds against the odds" plot, but many great films have been made with the same storyline. I particularly enjoyed the way Dusty wins the race; it is straight out of the 1937 Thompson Trophy Race when the Folkerts SK-3 passed the Marcoux-Bromberg Special in the last fifty yards of the last lap for the closest finish in American air racing history. Anybody who enjoyed "Porco Rosso" or "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" should love "Planes." It is a fun story and a great aviation film as well.

Overall a good movie. Not up to par with the Cars series. The movie seems rushed and the plot is extremely predictable. Kids still love it.
