Synopsis

Planes
Cars gets a high-flying spinoff with this Disney Toon Studios film about a humble crop duster who dreams of becoming a great air racer. Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) spends most of his days flying low, but his eyes are always turned up toward the clouds. Sadly, Dusty's modest engine and intense fear of heights make a career in racing a long shot at best. Things begin to look up for Dusty, however, when a veteran aviator helps him qualify for a race against the reigning circuit champ. Now if Dusty can just learn to let go of his fears, his checkered-flag dreams may finally come true. Also featuring the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Brad Garrett. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Films that concentrate on aviation & airplanes are rare, so it is a joy to see one that gets all the background material correct. In "Planes" the aircraft fly and manuever just as real planes would. And many of the characters are clearly patterned after real, historic aircraft. El Cupacabra is clearly a Granville Brothers Type R racer, and Franz, the flying auto, looks like the Aerocar designed and built by Moulton B. Taylor. The idea of a cropduster becoming an air racer is a classic "underdog succeeds against the odds" plot, but many great films have been made with the same storyline. I particularly enjoyed the way Dusty wins the race; it is straight out of the 1937 Thompson Trophy Race when the Folkerts SK-3 passed the Marcoux-Bromberg Special in the last fifty yards of the last lap for the closest finish in American air racing history. Anybody who enjoyed "Porco Rosso" or "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" should love "Planes." It is a fun story and a great aviation film as well.

I'm 71 and a kid at heart. I grew up on Navy bases all over the western hemisphere - California, Washington, Tennessee, Hawaii and Guam. My dad was a Navy AD1 (under the cowling aviation mechanic). I have seen him work on almost all the WWII thru Viet Nam aircraft. I have flown on a B25 Mitchell with Collins Foundation like the one that the Hall sons rode in the bonus feature. I have built models of both the Mitchell and the P-51 Mustang. I have a part time job with the local Grand Prairie Airhogs baseball team. The P51 and the F4U (skipper) were both built in Grand Prairie (Vaught Aircraft and American). The Airhogs have a 1/2 scale flyable F4U on display. I saw the Navy Blue Angels overfly Guam in 1954 in their F9F Panthers. Everything mentioned above were either featured in the movie or the bonus feature which makes the film very personal to this 71 year old.

Animation is great considering it's 'low budget' for a Disney animated movie. This is not a Pixar offering, but plain Disney. That's not a bad thing, mind you, as I believe this was originally meant as direct to DVD. Long story short, it's an underdog story. You can guess what happens in the end. It's got enough humor to not bore adults to death and a neat casting surprise during the aircraft carrier scene. Think "Top Gun." Good story for kids and I'm glad they enjoy it. They watch it often so it is definitely money well spent.

My child is at the age where he is starting to want to choose his own things. I had a gift card and was going to allow him to purchase one movie, and this is what he chose. He had seen it before and liked it enough to want to own it. I watched it with him when we got home and for me, once was enough. I could see why kids would enjoy it, but it doesn't have the same charm that the like-minded "Cars" has. If it is just for the kids, this movie is fine.

From the world of Disney Pixar's Cars, is Planes starring Dusty a crop duster that wants to race. He meets new characters and learns a few things. My nephew loved both of the Cars movies and this seemed to keep him interested. The characters aren't as developed or likeable, but for a child, it will keep him/her interested for a while. Its been around a month since he first watched this movie, but he has rewatched it a few times.

Dusty is a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing -- and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Semi-recommended, might be best to rent first. Animation is lovely with great views from the planes' perspective. I liked CARS more though (story better I felt). This story was a bit dark, especially for younger kids. Some good lessons about conquering fears, but the 'evil' plane is more enjoyable for young kids (faster, nicer looking, etc). Some funny moments, some touching moments, but overall, I just felt it was ok.

It's Pixar so it's not going to be bad regardless, but i had just a little bit of deja vu watching this. As a big "Cars" fan the plots of the two films were just a little too similar. Still a pretty good movie. I think Pixar needs to get a little more brave with their story lines and not have it be about the "plucky car/plane/fish" that can win! That being said it's Pixar...and fun.
