Q: Was this made to go in a gaming laptop, such as those made by Maingear?

A: No. This is not for laptops. This will ONLY fit inside a desktop tower in a PCiE gen3 x16 slot. You can however purchase an enclosure to plug this in to a laptop IF it supports that.
