“This won't recognize my external hard drive. When I plug it in to either usb port the mousepad stops working and there's no proof of the drive's existence. Any suggestions?”

I saw on a youtube review of this that the product doesn't give off enough power to run external drives unless it has a separate power source.You may need to invest in a Y cable then plug the usb power into a wall or usb power brick to get it working.
