- Answer Hey Emily, negatory. You can have the echo dot without the Echo. The Echo dot DOES NOT have impressive speakers but will do the job for quick request...plus you can always plug it up to bigger speakers. (I have the Tap and the dot and use them without the echo).

- Answer No, it is not meant to be portable even though it is small enough to carry around. If you want portability, then you want the Amazon Tap which has a battery.

QuestionI am looking to purchase this for an elderly parent to use as reminders for medications, appointments, etc. Will this do this...and how easy would this be to set up? My mother does not have a smart phone but does have a PC and wi-fi connections.

- Answer Yes, Alexa is great for reminders, you can tell her what to remind you of, and the time you want reminded as well. You can set reminders from your phone or by voice. If you have the App on your phone, you can set the reminders for her. However, she will need to be in the vicinity when the reminder goes off. It's just like the alarm, it won't wake you up if you're spending the night outside of your home!
