  • QuestionWhen hooking up other external drives with my MacBook Air it gives me a "drive needs power" error and won't work. Does this require an external power source or should it run off my MacBook Air with a USB connection?

    Asked by PowerSource.

    • Answer It may be that your laptop doesn't have enough power for whatever you have plugged into it. You may need a powered USB multiple connector. My desktop has more than enough power for the Superdrive. You can check under your "System Report" on your Mac to see how much power is available for USB connections.

  • QuestionHave a new MacBook Pro with no USB ports - can I still use this external CD player?

    Asked by Lillyco.

    • Answer Yes, you need a thunderbolt (USB-C) dongle to use USB devices. There are several types available ranging from Apple’s dongle that is about $20 to third party companies who make a combination dock that connects via USB-C, and includes a USB-C pass-through port, two USB 3.0 ports, and an HDMI port with 4K (30Hz) support. With this, you don’t have to carry around multiple adapters. Hope this helps. Good luck.

    Asked by cbinnall.

    • Answer This drive is designed mainly to work with Macs that didn't ship from the factory with an optical drive. If your iMac came with an optical drive, this external model may not work with it. If you don't want to repair the drive that's already in your iMac, there are drives from other manufacturers that may work better with your computer than this one.
