A:AnswerIt’s not an answering machine. This is only a phone but has the capability of receiving voicemail if your phone service offers it. Think of it like your cell phone, no answering machine but can receive voicemail cuz the cell phone company allows voicemail function.

Delete all old messages
Use this feature to delete all old messages. Once deleted, you cannot
retrieve the deleted messages. New messages cannot be deleted until you
have listened to them.
To delete all old messages on the telephone base:
Press x/delete on the telephone base when the answering system is not
in use. The system announces, “To delete all old messages, press delete
again.”
Press x/delete again. The system announces, “All old messages deleted.”
To delete all old messages on the handset:
Press menu/select when in idle mode to enter the
main menu.
Press CID or DIR to scroll to Answering sys, then
press menu/select.
Press CID or DIR to scroll to Delete all old,
then press menu/select. The screen shows Delete all msg?.

A:AnswerMy first one is on the first floor and the second phone is upstairs at the end of the house. So, I would say they do not have to be near each other!
A:AnswerI haven't used an answering machine in years but voice mail does not erase itself, loose the message, can save messages with less possibility of erasure. Messages can easily be checked remotely. During a power outage you can still receive voicemail and an answering machine won't work. You can pick up voicemail using any phone not as easy with an answering machine.
