  • QuestionI'm looking at pricing and Wal Mart provides a fee for Streaming Device Setup - $79.00 to get expert help. Do I need someone to help me with set up or is it easy to do?

    Asked by Wags.

    • Answer It doesn't take much effort to set up a Roku (or a Fire TV player for that matter). The important thing it knowing your WiFi password to get it connected to your home network. Everything else required is explained in very simple steps. Just remember you need to create a Roku user account (free) before you try to set it up. You must link your new Roku to an existing user account during setup, and it isn't usable until you do. Go to https://www.roku.com/ to create your Roku user account. You do need to have a credit card to set up the account, but nothing is ever charged to it unless you purchase something using your Roku player. Caution: If anyone ever tries to tell you that you need to subscribe to a special Roku "premium" user account, or that you need to pay a fee to register your new Roku, you have contacted spammers and do not give them any information whatsoever. Don't even give them your name, or confirm anything they attempt to get from you. All they want to do is steal your money, and perhaps take over control of your Roku user account, which in turn would allow them to "break" your Roku and extort a fee to "fix" it.

  • QuestionI have a Toshiba TV from 2003. I have been told that I should get Roku Express plus because it is for older TVs. Is this the same as Roku Express 4K+

    Asked by Doc.

    • Answer Hi, Doc! The Roku Express 4k+ is different from the Roku Express +. The Express + with composite connections was released in 2018 and has been discontinued. The Express 4k+ is one of the newest Roku® streaming players and can be connected to any TV with an HDMI® connection. If your Toshiba TV has an available HDMI connection you can use any of the Roku Streaming players with your TV. Asked by Mel.

    • Answer Hi, Mel! The Roku Express 4K+ is compatible with any tv that has an available HDMI connection. If you do not currently have a 4K TV the Roku Express 4K+ will still work on an HD TV and will output video at the HD TVs native resolution.

  • QuestionI want to put the Roku inside a cabinet near the TV and connect with a longer HDMI cable (I will supply the longer HDMI cable). Will the remote still work with the device inside a cabinet in the same room? Does this answer apply to all Roku devices?

    Asked by LineOfSight.

    • Answer This is exactly how I have it set up and it works fine. When I mounted my 65" smart tv on the wall, I ran an extra HDMI cable just in case I added devices, so I hooked this roku to that cable and it works fine. I have the ROKU unit concealed behind an electric fireplace mantle, and the remote works fine without having line of sight to the receiver (even though there's a misleading sticker on the unit which indicates you need to point it at the device). Just to be clear, I have the Roku Express 4k+ 2021. Good luck.

  • QuestionI have 4 tvs , what would I need for this, wanted to buy router also, My internet download speeds average 15 to 20 mbps , would that be enough to use multiple tvs at the same time? Thanks

    Asked by Steve.

    • Answer My experience 15 to 20 mbps download is insufficient bandwidth to run 4 tvs at one time, and that seems pretty slow. If you got more mbps, lime 100, maybe 4 TVs would work. Equipment you need, based on my usage, a router, modem, and the Roku. Your Roku joins your network and gets the signal through the internet. You need a Roku for each TV.

  • QuestionHow does the Express 4K+ (2021) compare to the Ultra (2020)? I am intrigued by the "fast channel launch" of the Ultra. Does the Express 4K+ launch channels as fast as the Ultra?

    Asked by Intrigued.

    • Answer I have both players, but I've only had the Express 4K+ for a short while, and only used it when I traveled late last month. I can't give a definitive answer to compare the two, but the Express 4K+ (model 3940) certainly seems to be very close to the Ultra 4800 in performance. However, the 4800 and the 3940 have two completely different processing chips. The 4800 uses the ARM Cortex A55 and has 2 GB of operational memory, while the 3940 has a new Realtek 1315 processor and 1 GB of memory. I would probably still give the edge to the 4800, not only for the additional memory, but also for its Dolby Vision support. Roku doesn't offer any other player with DV support, although there are Roku TVs that support DV (Roku doesn't make the TVs themselves). Also don't forget that the 4800 has a wired network connection (also supports dual band WiFi), while the 3940 is WiFi only unless you purchase an additional USB-Ethernet adapter.

  • QuestionDo I need to have a service from one of them companies like Verizon or spectrum to use the Roku?

    Asked by Kika.

    • Answer You don't need any TV subscription service. There is a huge amount of media available online for no charge (some have commercials, just like broadcast TV), and you can subscribe to providers such as Prime Video, Netflix, etc. You do need Internet access in some form. Without Internet access, the Roku cannot be initially set up, and it won't do much else. This player does not have a USB port for connecting a drive containing video or audio, so network access is a must. Once it's set up, it could be used to stream media from a DLNA server on a home network, no Internet required. But the network itself is mandatory.

  • QuestionI recently heard that YouTube TV is no longer supported by Roku. Is this true?

    Asked by JD.

    • Answer From ROKU.com Update on YouTube TV channel on Roku Update 4/30/21 If you already have YouTube TV installed on your Roku device, you will continue to have access to the channel unless Google requires us to remove it. Note that you should not remove the channel if you plan to use it. New installations and reinstallations will not be possible at this time. Background Recent negotiations with Google to carry YouTube TV have broken down because Roku refuses to accept Google’s terms that we believe could directly harm our users. We will always stand up for our users, which is why we asked Google to remove what we believe to be unfair and anticompetitive requirements that could increase consumer cost and unnaturally impact your search results and the usage of your data. While we are deeply disappointed in Google’s decision to use their monopoly power to try and force terms that will directly harm streamers, we remain committed to reaching an agreement with Google that preserves your access to YouTube TV, protects your data and ensures a level playing field for companies to compete. We encourage you to contact Google and urge them to reach an agreement to continue offering YouTube TV on Roku and to follow standard industry practices, pledging not to require access to sensitive search data or to manipulate search results.
