“Does the fitbit alta show the actual number of steps, or does it just show dots representing the steps like the fitbit flex does?”

It has a foot with the number of steps next to it.

It shows approximate steps, ie 1.5k, 2.2k, etc. You still need to look at your phone or sync to the computer to see the exact number of steps.

Yes, it shows how many steps. Actually it even shows the steps while you are walking.

It shows your steps. My daughter and I counted ours to see if it was accurate and we were surprised to find it was pretty close
