• A:Answer I understand that many freezers do no perform well above 110 degrees. My AC technician was here just before the freezer came and I asked about the temperature in my non ventilated garage during our hot and humid summers. He thought I should be OK. You'll need to get some idea of how hot your garage gets in the summer. I decided that I would probably save a lot by not wasting food during the other three seasons. I am filling the freezer with prepared individual meals, as I prefer to cook more at one time. I will probably not keep it so full of food (substitute ice) during the summer due to the heat and possibility of hurricanes in my part of the world. These are my thoughts. Good luck!

• A:Answer Hi Dirtman - You never have to defrost the Frost-Free freezer. It has been pre-set at the factory to defrost itself automatically. The defrost water is deposited in the non-removable drain pan below the freezer, and it evaporates from the heat of the compressor. Keep in touch! SUE@GEA

Q: QuestionHow long is this model expected to keep food safe in event of a power failure? Will keeping a container of ice in the Model help to hold temp? Does the unit function best if it’s fully stocked?

• A:Answer Hi DKAZ- In case of extended power failure, the freezer will keep food frozen for 24 hours provided warm air is not admitted. Foods will help to stabilize the temperature. This is because the items absorb the cold, and actually work to help maintain a steady temperature. If there is a power outage, we recommend the following: Keep door closed. Place bags of regular ice in the freezer to help keep foods frozen. Place ice in a container in the fresh food section to try to keep fresh food items cooler. If it is anticipated that power will be out for a length of time, you can try to keep food frozen or cool in a cooler using either bags of ice or with dry ice* (*WARNING: HANDLING OF DRY ICE CAN CAUSE FREEZING BURNS ON HANDS. Gloves or other protection is recommended. Dry ice is most commonly found in the yellow pages under "Carbon Dioxide".) Thanks for choosing GE! SUE@GEA

• A:Answer The bins are about 4" deep, but can only take a box up to about 3.75" deep due to the design. The bottom door bin is about an inch shallower. Hope this helps.

If your freezer had to be transported from the store laying down, we recommend leaving it upright for the same amount of time it was laying down before plugging it in. If you do not know how long or if it was laid down, allow unit to sit for a maximum of 24 hours before plugging it in. If your freezer remained upright during transport, you can plug it in now.
