A:Answer When you first start the Opal and it begins to make ice, the initial batches of ice nuggets will be slushy. After about 30 minutes, your Opal will be making good, solid nuggets. If the ice nuggets are all slushy, even the ones at the top of the ice bin, the Opal may need to be cleaned. Water quality is very important to the function and required maintenance of your ice maker. Minerals from your water can build up in the Opal over time, which would then need to be cleaned. We recommend using distilled water in your Opal. Even bottled water can have high mineral content.
