• Yes actually both are digital, just different medium. And overkill for the low bandwidth of sound.

• Coaxial cable do support surround sound 5.1 or 7.1 but does not support DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD.

• It doesnt replace it but another type of audio connection. Optical is very good but seldom used now.
