No, you don't have to have a contract for internet. There are dozens of hotspots around most cities that you can use. The downside is that folks can spy on some of your activities when you are using them. If you have internet at your home or apartment, all you need is a wireless router which may or may not be provided by your provider. Some providers provide only a cable/network modem, and others a combined modem/router, which may or may not be wireless. You can purchase wireless routers at Best Buy. Netgear and Linksys are top brands.
