no, they are not designed to be connected via wires. The ORBIs will set up their own dedicated 5G connection in the background for communication. However, they do work best if each of the satellites can access the main ORBI directly. They can daisy chain if they are too far but that does have a minor affect on speed. This is basically not noticeable for the average user. The wired ports on the back of the device are there to provide wired connections to devices from the ORBI, not to another ORBI.

The purpose of the mesh wi-fi network is to have a seamless wireless network without interruption and without any degradation in the signal strength. The old technology where you basically had a repeater, not only degraded the signal by 50% with every repeat but was also a different IP address; making things like a cellular phone call on the wi-fi network impossible as it would drop the call when it switched to a new IP address.
