A:Answer Yes, This lens was actually designed for the FX series, but also works on the DX series. Both the D500 and the D 5500 are DX series cameras, so it will work on both and will work the same way on both. In fact, all current Nikon DSLR cameras will use the DX or FX series lenses. There should not be a difference in how the lens performs on either camera. If anything it may perform better on the D500 since it has more functionality than the D5500.
If you are interested in taking images that will be printed in large sizes like poster size, you may even look at the D750 which is similarly priced to the D500, but is an FX (larger) format camera. The only issue you would run into on the D750 is that if you still have your kit lenses 18-55 or 70-300 DX lenses, the image will be cropped in the FX format camera, but it will work and you will get the same image you would have gotten with you D5500.
