“Standalone and Phone-Based music player specifics? The specs say yes, but it isn't clear that you can store the songs on the phone and play them from there. I want to do this when I can't have the phone turned on, such as on an airplane or where I can't take my phone while working. The latter case is why I like that the Neo doesn't have its own camera. Besides a standalone music mode, if supported, does the watch also allow phone-based music streaming from an internet-service and/or music stored locally on the phone -- for when I want to listen to a wider library of songs? This does have a 4gb storage for you to place all your favorite songs. You do not always need your phone to listen to music with this device.

I'm not sure about streaming music to the watch from a phone, I don't think it is possible, but I haven't tried it. You can control the music playing on your phone with the watch if you are using a Bluetooth headset or speaker.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This is not a feature I was really looking for in a smart watch, but as of right now I have the iHeartRadio app on my Gear 2 Neo. I had never used it before writing this answer. It does not play on the watch, it only allows you to play or pause the music on your phone. It will also allow you to select a station from your favorites. There is also a media controller app, which does the same thing, just with whatever media is currently open on your phone. I've been sitting here playing with it for about 10 minutes and do see a way to make the music play on the watch. Even if there is a way, I'm not sure how it would work in the situation you are describing because the Bluetooth range is rather limited. Or how it would work if your phone is off since the watch has limited storage capacity. TL;DR: I do not think it will do what you want.
