All vacuums will necessarily have an exhaust, and my old Kenmore upright that uses bags would do exactly what you described--however, I haven't noticed that happening with my Shark. Be sure to empty the "tube" regularly for best function. Dust on shelves, etc. builds up, so consider dusting shelves on a regular basis to avoid this problem that could occur with any vacuum exhaust.

STEPS TO CHECK:
-Disconnect the floor nozzle and turn it upside down to inspect the brush roll for debris/hair in the roller.
-Open the bottom frame and do a visual inspection of the hose.
-Reconnect the frame to the floor nozzle.
-Reconnect the floor nozzle to the body.
-Turn the unit on by pressing the POWER button and tilt the handle down.
-Then press the BRUSHROLL button on the handle; brush roll should start spinning.
