This receiver has no conversion at all, so if you want to input to this receiver using HDMI, you have to use the HDMI output. Same thing for the composite(yellow) connection.

You will notice that most of the ports in this receiver are IN. That means you can connect any device using HDMI or component and it will output all the signals to HDMI OUT going to your TV.
