• A:Answer MTBFs vary between manufacturers AND the characteristic usage class of the drive. Manufacturers like to claim this time to far exceed 11 years but reality shows a fairly high variance between manufacturers and the “class” of drive. In this case the WD 4TB “Desktop” drive in avg daily “consumer grade” usage, should last 7 years or more easily, even in 24/7 powered up state as I run such systems. The Western Digital quality is fairly high and you should see a low 2-3% overall annual failure rate across their quantity of shipped units. When you need higher grade performance, look to a “NAS” class drive . . . remember the old saying of you “get what you pay for” is a good rule of thumb. Hope it’s helps.

• A:Answer A SATA hard drive is the current standard for computers which replaced the older and slower (P)ATA interface. SATA is Serial ATA and PATA is Parallel ATA. The current SATA is faster and uses a much thinner cable from the drive to the motherboard. If you look at the picture, the wider black cable is (P)ATA hooked up to the DVD drive and the thin red cable is SATA hooked up to the hard drive.

Q: QuestionMy motherboard is designed for SATA 2.0 = 3 Gbits/s (Asus P6T SE). I know that SATA 3 is supposed to be compatible with SATA 2 MBs. Will this HDD work with a SATA 2 MB? I know it will be slower but wanted to make sure it will work.

• A:Answer I am also using a SATA 2.0 motherboard on Windows 10 because my processor is still working fine, and I am happy to tell you that the Evo 850 is working great on my system—so I think you should definitely get this drive. Note that the excellent performance in spite of only SATA 2.0 actually makes sense because most of what our drives are doing all day is random reads and writes, which means they typically aren't doing tasks that will allow them to realize their full read/write bandwidth. Because solid state disks (i.e., SSDs like this EVO 850) perform random read/writes orders of magnitude faster than hard disk drives (i.e., HDDs), you will see an incredible performance boost even though you are running SATA 2. And this EVO 850 is proving to be exceptional at everything it does in my hands.

• A:Answer Should be fine for most desktops as long as you have an open slot for a 3.5" HDD. Check the specs on the website where you got it, should say if it has extra slots are available. For laptops you'll want the smaller 2.5" HDD. Don't forget to buy a SATA cable! My PC had extra cables inside that powers the drive but *NOT* the SATA (data) cable that connects to your board. I believe this is the case for most PCs.

• A:Answer If you have never done this don't try, have someone do it for you. If you replace your main drive with this you won't have a computer operating system. You will have to install windows and start fresh, if you are adding this drive as an additional storage device then you will have to format it before you can use it. Hope that helps.

Q: QuestionI bought this drive to use on a Dell XPS 8950. All the drivers and firmware are up to date but it still will not recognize the drive in bios so that Windows can recognize it. Any ideas?
