QuestionHave been storing picture files from a rather massive project on the Easystore external hard drive. Suddenly I'm getting a message about a fatal hardware error! Help! Has this drive died?

- Answer With what you have said, I can think of three possible problems. 1.(least likely) A problem with the USB port. If you haven't tried already, try moving the USB connection to a different port. 2. A failure with external drive enclosure. If you can't figure out if it is the drive or the enclosure I would take the enclosure apart and replace it or if you have the capability try putting the drive in a computer and see if works. 3. The hard drive is bad. Naturally if that is the case there isn't anything you can do. (Small possibility. The easystore enclosure is large enough there could be more that 1 hard drive in it so before I gave up I would take the enclosure apart and check. If there is more than one you might be able get the pictures off of 1 of them.

- Answer All of them format to TB, not G(GB?), so when you get a plot of land 100x100 feet, a fence installed to hold various farm animals, say files, takes up space, 1x100 on all sides, so you lose a bit of space. This formats to about 7.68Tb after formatting with NTFS, similar with exFAT and HFS+ for OS X. Learn about this on youtube, search for "why do hard drives format smaller"...

- Answer Short answer is no. Longer answer is you COULD but it's not worth the hassle. PS3 OS can't see drives larger than 2 TB. Get a smaller drive, like a 2TB.

- Answer No power switch. But it is green. It will power down when not being used.and when you attempt access there is a pause while it spins back up and powers on.

QuestionCan I use this hard drive for Windows XP and does it have to be formatted first before using it?

- Answer This drive comes initialized as an NTFS drive which post dates XP and is not recognized by XP. You would have to reinitialize it as an MBR drive and then reformat it but the problem is that XP can only address a maximum disk size of about 2TB. There used to be ways of tricking XP into being able to use all the space on 3TB and 4TB drives by creating additional partitions but I don't know if that works anymore. Basically, I would not recommend buying this drive for use on Windows XP.

- Answer Yes it can be. If it is formatted in ExFat ot will be compatible with both Mac and Windows. If it is NTFS you will need to format it ExFat or what what ever Mac uses.

QuestionWhat is the mbps transfer speed?

- Answer Well the theoretical max is 500 Gbit/s or roughly 500 Mbps. I saw theoretical as I have not ever gotten close to that amount with my transfers. Others may have gotten closer. The highest I have seen with my test on my equipment is 163 Mbps. I'm using a laptop so someone might be able to get higher speeds on a tower PC.

QuestionWhy does it the website say "Feature-Data Encryption-Yes" when you can't put a password on it? From WD support: We are sorry to inform you that the WD EasyStore drive does not support native WD Security software to encrypt the drive.
