yes. you MIGHT have to format (erase) it using disk utility. but once you do that. it will be great. (i do that with any new external drive anyway). when erasing, choose: - osx journaled if you only plan to use it with macs - exfat if you plan to use it with both mac and windows

You could just purchase a device that is already MAC formatted. There is no downside if you have more space than you need for backup. 4 or 5 TB is a lot of data - did you mean 4 or 5 GB? These small portable drives are for GB data backup.
