It is an IR remote but the A/V receiver does work with my DirecTV remote set to RF.

The remote that comes with the unit is only IR. However, I have changed my DirecTV remote control from IR to RF and it does work with the YAMAHA AVENTAGE RX-A780.

No the remote is not RF, but there is a free app that will give you full control of the receiver and works on any phone or tablet.
