    Terrible, piece of junk

I should have written this review 2 years ago to warn the poor souls thinking if purchasing this laptop. The WORST investment I have ever made. From the get go, this computer lagged. It was NEVER right. I only ever used this laptop for the internet and for a couple apps. This computer has had NO use. No big downloads, no nothing. Everything about this computer should be fast. I'm so unhappy that it took me this long to figure out how bad this laptop actually has been. In the last two years I have used this laptop maybe once a month. That's how little use it's gotten. And the tiny bit I used it couldn't even do it without lagging every step of the way. Also the screen brightness is very dim even turned all the way up, the speakers are absolutely horrible. I can't believe they would sell a computer that runs so horribly. After two years I see the reviews on this laptop are awful. Even the Best Buy customer service told me that there is probably a defect in alot of these laptops. I had a computer expert come over today, he worked on it for two hours , and after everything, it ran just as crappy and lagged just as much. He said there is no reason why this computer should lag. I'm in the process of resetting the whole thing. I wasted $800 in a laptop that never worked. I saved up my money for a while to buy something nice for myself and this is what I got. Will never purchase an Acer again.

My background: I am a college student majoring in a STEM field. I used this laptop for a lot of research, multitasking, and even use tablet mode a lot. Negative experiences include: 1. The battery can't go longer than 1 hour when browsing the web. Battery saver mode is hilarious, the laptop shuts down at 18%. I am willing to live with this because I can attach my charger, but there is a feeling of entrapment which is not the point of having a laptop. I don't want to have to worry about sticking to a wall outlet. 2. Learning the touchscreen does not support active stylus. I was willing to use a capacitive stylus, so I bought one. Yet it still inconsistently registers; making the thought of EVER writing on this laptop IMPOSSIBLE. I was hoping to interact with my notes digitally. At some point, I gave up styluses and used my finger, but even with my finger, the screen will go from having short latency to LONG latency; I'm talking about drawing a line and having the screen pick up that line two inches behind the starting point. While we're on this topic, the screen will sometimes glitch and activate everything on the screen at that moment, leaving me no choice but to force shut down the laptop or deal with the millions of pages that just appeared. This is terrible because it glitches my computer and I cannot use the track-pad to take control of the mouse because the glitch stops this function. When it glitches, I have to immediately press Fn+F11 (stops touchscreen function) and THEN force shut down my laptop. 3. The screen brightness is not very bright. Even on max brightness, it is difficult to see. Cannot use this laptop next to a window or have the screen in an angle that creates a glare. 4. The gestures while in tablet mode do not always work. I would like to multitask while in tablet mode and have achieved that once in my three years of owning it. Positive experiences: 1. The storage is dependable. I have hundreds of documents, photos, and videos and continue saving more. This laptop allows me to save without having to monitor my storage, and I appreciate that. 2. The SD card slot. I use microSDs and it is convenient to access them without having to get an adapter. There are enough ports on here for a content experience when needing to charge my phone, transfer files, and use a webcam. 3. Outershell durability. There are a couple of scratches on the finish, but I have had this laptop for at least three years. 4. Intel i7 is nice. Conclusion: If you got this laptop as a gift, or if you are just using this for facebook and youtube, then it's okay. Any work practicality is NOT happening. Don't waste your money on an outdated laptop.

    Horrible laptop

This is a terrible laptop. From the start it had battery issues, never held a charge for longer than 30 mins. I just use it to surf online, check/write emails, I'm not a gamer. It also took forever to start up from the beginning. Acer customer service back then told me to use a paper clip to push in the reset button which made absolutely no difference. It's really slow too and I don't have much of anything saved or downloaded on this laptop that could slow the process. It's very annoying and useless in this day and age. I also had the 2 year Best Buy warranty/Geek Squad with it (my dear bf who gave me this for my bday wanted me to have no hassles with it). I turned it in to Geek Squad twice. Useless service by the way as well. They just ran a virus and spyware check (got that myself and had run it several times already, thank you) and told me they found nothing wrong with the laptop, the battery or any viruses. I should've turned it in before the 2 years were up but felt bad because the not computer savvy bf had gotten me the laptop for my bday, spent $1200 on it (crazy!!!), wanting to get me the best possible touchscreen (the poor thing fell for the Best Buy guy's sales pitch claiming this is one of the best on the market). We could have gotten a much nicer and better laptop for a few hundred less. I'm just annoyed by this thing, it's horrible. Slow, terrible battery life, but $1200 were wasted on it so I can't just put it aside and just get a new one. This has really cost me a lot of agony already. Don't buy!

I bought this laptop in August 2016, and have been using it ever since. It was fine at first, but after a few months several problems started appearing. The screen cracked, and after trying to use the warranty on the device, but encountering Acer's terrible website, I gave up. Any time I plug this laptop in, the speed completely tanks, and when you have to plug the laptop in about every 45 minutes or it will die, it becomes quite the issue. The computer is extremely loud as well, causing a distraction in the classroom setting I use it in, as the fan is constantly running at 100%. The heat management system is just not good. I should have thought a little more about my purchase and regret being stuck with this laptop.

    Not worth the money

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

At the start this laptop was phenomenal. The battery would last a few hours, high quality screen display and touchscreen. However the issue is with the durability of the internal processing, the battery, and the overheating. I use this laptop all the time for school and personal use, this often will require me to be on it consistently throughout the day. However, after owning it for approximately 17 months the battery life is maybe 45 minutes requires to be plugged in constantly. Anytime the laptop is plugged in, the speed is cut down to about a fourth of what it usually would be and will only pick up if it is A) unplugged or B) stays plugged in till fully charged and then some in which case you would be better off buying a desktop. On top of this, for some reason anytime I move the laptop too much it will simply do a small restart where the screen locks and I have to wait a minute to unlock the screen. Overall I was very dissatisfied for the amount of money I put in and would certainly consider looking to other laptops.

    Battery Sucks

I bought this laptop summer of 2016, before I started college. It started off with minimal problems, but soon I realized there were quite a few. It was able to handle excel, word, etc., but things were very slow. I rarely used the touch screen functionality, but that was just because I prefered a keyboard. It was pretty durable, I dropped it twice off a table and it just has a crack on the outer shell. Touchscreen is crack free. The charger broke after 2 years, so I had to buy a new one. It was almost impossible to find a compatible charger. My laptop now will only charge if the charger is in at a specific angle and will die on me randomly. It maybe lasts 45 mins without being plugged in. After nearly 4 years, I am fed up with this laptop and will not be purchasing another Acer. I have talked to other friends who also had battery/charger problems with their Acer laptop.

    Screen cracks!!

Good to know its not just me about the screen. I've had mine for about a year and treat it like gold cause I paid so much for it. About 900 bucks. The screen cracked and I didn't even see it at first and didn't know why my touchscreen was acting up. I teach student online and it was really affecting the classes. Finally found the crack and its like cancer.... It's gotten so worse within the last 2 weeks and now it's all over the whole screen. Lucky I could turn off the touchscreen at least so I can still teach my classes. But really?? I could just cry. It's not even paid off yet and I use this to edit my photography work as thats what I do for a living and I'm having trouble finding someone who will repair it. It's a completely unnessecary repair too because it should never have cracked in the first place. Not having touch screen really affects my classes too. So upset. And I've never had an issue with Acer before.

I purchased this computer 15 months ago. At the very beginning it worked fine. 5 months later all of a sudden I started having IP configuration issues. At that point in my computer either doesn't want to log on to the internet or the internet is connected and it will not cross over and log on to the internet. It's now gotten to the point where it will not log on to the internet at all! When I try and go into settings my settings window doesn't open it completely freezes up. And this is a computer I use maybe once a week for personal items just to check email and maybe do a little shopping. I have spent more time at Best Buy taking and picking up my computer from The Geek Squad. And every single time I pick it up it seems to be worse. Broke down and ended up buying a Mac. Obviously no problems with that. But purchasing this Acer R15 has been a huge waste of my money and my time. And I am very, very disappointed!

I purchased this laptop for nursing school. This thing cost me roughly $800. I do nothing but take tests and do assignments and read my emails from time to time. I use my iPhone for everything. Browsing internet playing games emails bill pay. This computer is rarely used. This is the biggest piece of garbage I have owned in my life and I will never buy Acer again. The Best Buy associate told me this was a good laptop. It’s garbage slow as can be. My battery doesn’t even last an hour. The charger runs so hot you can burn someone with it. I’m so disappointed in the laptop. I was excited. This is an epic failure and I will buy another brand never Acer again.

I bought this laptop in May of 2016 from Best Buy. Barely used it, no exaggeration - maybe once every other day for an hour or so. Screen died completely. Sent it into Acer in February of 2017 for repair. They sent me back a brand new one. Then now, less than a year later, the screen went dead again. But now since I'm out of warranty, they won't help me. Its beyond me that an $800 laptop stopped working in a year and a half and they are refusing to help me because I'm out of warranty by 6 months. Absolutely horrible and honestly I'm ashamed for them that these are the kind of products and service they stand by. Not only would I not recommend, I am posting my story everywhere so people don't buy this $800 paper weight.

    Junk

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I created a Best Buy account just to write a review about this product. When I test drove this computer at Best Buy (2015) it seemed snappy and responsive. I really liked the screen size and the speaker volume was great. But once I got it home that's when I started noticing all the problems. It can bare run two applications at once. Multiple website tabs? Forget it. This thing takes forever to boot up, and is just slow slow slow. It constantly freezes, and switching between applications is tedious. I spent 12 hundred on this computer really hoping to get something that would challenge a Mac. I should've just gotten a Mac. I've had several computer savvy friends, and one computer repair store take a look at it and try and improve it's quality. But anything they did only lasted a day or two. Also, It once dropped from my bed to a carpeted floor and one of the speakers broke. Wasn't even worth repairing. Please save your money. On top of all that the battery life is horrendous. You might be able to get an hour of use out of it. It's gone down by a 1/4 since I started writing this review! And lastly the charger is a piece of junk. There's no magnet or friction to hold it in. Any slight movement and it falls out. After about a year the part that plugs into the computer started to fray and eventually just stopped working. The best thing I can say is I found an inexpensive replacement of Amazon. It's really weird because it has all the hardware to be a great computer but for whatever reason it runs like crap. I honestly, since day one, barely use this thing because of how unenjoyable it is. So it's not a matter of ware and tare. In summation save your money and buy something else. You could get a Mac desktop for $500 that would run exponentially better than this laptop. It's sad because it's a good looking laptop and it feels sturdy. OH! I forgot to mention. This thing weighs about 50lbs! I didn't notice it when I first got it. But overtime, and after handling other laptops, you realize how insanely heavy this thing is. Good luck in your search!

    Fan Noise

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My computer suddenly seemed to be quite loud, but I thought it was just me until my classmates and family members said something. I took it into Geek Squad a few days later, only to find out I was 12 mon and 2 days since my purchase. Of course, 2 days out of warranty! They said they'd take a look at it anyway and insured they'd diagnose it in a quite area. I reluctantly handed it over for "24 hours" so they could check it out. About 36 hours later I picked it up with no issue being detected, but the same noise persisting. It's so loud it's distracting so I can no longer use it during class. Frustrated with the fan and Geek Squad both. Other than that, The only other issues I've had is the screen having a yellow tint to it now and then and for no apparent reason. Overall I enjoy the computer and it does everything I need. I just wish I'd gotten some sort of an extended warranty. Really makes you wonder about the 12 month standard ones when mine started acting up almost 12 months to the day.

I bought this laptop in feb 2016. I did not use it until I started school in August 2017. The screen stopped turning on Nov 2017. I brought it into a computer repair place and they said it was unrepairable due to board damage and Best Buy told me the manufacturer warranty is only a year. BUYER BEWARE

BUYER BEWARE!! Not sure if this laptop is similar enough to the SATA hard drive version (model #R5-571T-57Z0) that we have, but our laptop does NOT support an active stylus, not even the Acer Aspire Active Stylus! I searched everywhere for a compatible stylus and finally confirmed in an online chat with Acer that this laptop does not support ANY stylus. They were "sorry for the inconvenience". Acer makes the Aspire laptop and they make the Aspire stylus, but THEY ARE NOT COMPATIBLE!!? I'm sorry Acer; that's not an "inconvenience", that's an outrage!!! When one spends hundreds of dollars on a touchscreen, windows 10 device (with windows ink) one wouldn't even conceive that it doesn't support a stylus! I wish someone had warned us of this before purchasing, so I am doing so for others - BUYER BEWARE!!! Also, it was nearly impossible to set it up and get it going (thankfully my husband is a computer guru and knew plenty of 'tricks of the trade'), but even after all that, we are experiencing glitches, skips and lags in our software we installed. We were willing to 'deal' with all of that, but this lack of stylus is a definite deal breaker; that's one of the major reasons we made this purchase. Otherwise, why have windows ink?! Just be forewarned - RESEARCH STYLUS SUPPORT if you wish to fully utilize windows ink and other touchscreen features. It will not be easy; this information is not readily disclosed or typically listed with the specs and features. Don't get burned like we did!!

Just a note to those considering ACER

This laptop looked like a true winner. But it was an issue from day one. Whether we got a dud, or it is just poor quality, we bought it for our college-aged son, for class and lab work. From the start it had little issues, from intermittent shutdowns, to plainly being unresponsive. ACER gave us the runaround, almost blaming us as being unable to properly use the laptop. When I finally got fed up and contacted Costco Concierge, it was literally one week out of warranty. Finally, in the middle of a class exam, the laptop shut down and would not restart. Plugged in, or not, it was dead. We bought a new power supply, to see if it was that. Replaced the harddrive with an SSD, and finally, on the third service call, a local computer store technician removed the CMOS battery, let it sit for an hour, replaced the battery, and it worked again. How is that possible? Anyway, if I had the chance to do it over, I would buy any other laptop than this ACER. (Sadly, I was a huge ACER fan forever.) And, as I was looking for a stylus for this laptop, please note it does NOT support the Acer Active Stylus line. You can only use a capacitive pen with it, which is even less accurate than your finger. Shame on you ACER. Shame on you for selling this.

Bought this computer for the i7 processor, but this is hands-down the worst computer ever. The touch screen and reversible screen are features I never use and are more cumbersome than useful. I upgraded my memory, and still, the computer is slow as everything. It's embarrassing to be quite honest. It comes with a ton of bloatware already installed, and the plastic exterior makes it look and feel cheap, too. Save yourself the $800 and buy something else.

I have had this laptop about a year. And I have had only positive experience with it. I immediately put an SSD in it and it runs like lightning. Boots up and shutdown fast. Illuminated keyboard and yoga style are something I find I really enjoy more than I would have thought. Full numpad is good. After a year my battery lasts about 5 hours from 100% while watching videos. Sometime's I wish it was a bit more powerful, though my coding projects get no hangups. Can't speak to games since I'm no gamer. Fans don't come on very often and I don't usually notice. Screen gets to good brightness levels. Touchscreen is nice. The only thing I can say is make sure you get an SSD and the built in speakers are sometimes quieter than I would like.
