5 Stars... as an iPad Air 3; A bit short on "Pro"

    Posted .

This is a tricky device to rate and review, mainly due to Apple's categorizing it as a Pro device. As such, it's a bit underwhelming in a few ways. As an "iPad Air 3", however, it's outstanding right out of the box. True Tone Display, A9X chip,  Pencil support, improved cameras (front and back), four auto-adjusting stereo speakers - all of those are remarkable... and likely upgrades many would have expected from Apple had they simply announced an iPad Air 3. Instead, they repackage their 9.7" offering as a smaller version of the iPad Pro, and touted it during the Keynote (and on their site) as "...the ultimate upgrade for ANY iPad owner"... and priced it as such. It's here that I have a bit of a problem. I may be a bit unique here, in that I upgraded from the still-fast iPad Air 2 and not a much older model. I also have a 12.9" iPad Pro, and I can accurately state that the speed/performance boost does not warrant the "Pro" moniker for the smaller iPad. In day-to-day usage, I'm seeing maybe a second or so speed increases. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It's blazing fast, but so was the Air 2. It even shares the same 2GB of RAM that the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 have, half of what the larger Pro contains. Apple's mastery of software optimization aside, this is troubling, especially when you consider that just last year the key feature of "iPad multitasking" was reserved for "Apple's most powerful tablet" - i.e. the iPad Air 2, which had the most RAM of any iOS device at the time. With iOS 10 on the horizon, potential new features that may be hardware-intensive might only be available for the 12.9" Pro, which would be a hard pill to swallow for owners of Apple's NEWEST "Pro" device.

This iPad is great! Very user friendly and has less frequent Safari crashes than the Air. Very easy to set up and the 128G has plenty of space for pictures, apps, videos and music. The fingerprint access is great. Highly recommend this product!

I was able to get my iPad Pro 9.7 with 128 GB in gold for almost $200 cheaper. I lucked out and had a certificate on my account, there was a current sale going on, AND bestbuy.com still let me use a student discount code I had on top of all of that. I was so pleased. The iPad is just what I expected and hoped. My order shipped relatively quickly and got to me on time.

Wonderful tablet! Replaced my PC (almost)

I really enjoy the IPad pro's split screen for paying bills and doing work projects. The Keyboard and Apple Pencil make this a compact, versatile powerhouse. Speakers are better than other tablets that I've used. I still need a PC for updating my iPod nano (which is unfortunate), but it will not see much use outside of that anymore.

    Best tablet on the market

Having owned several older generations of iPads and one iPad Mini 2, I must say the iPad Pro is the best iPad device yet. I don't have much experience on the other tablets running Android. I have used Android devices some, and I am personally not a fan of that OS. When you first pick up the Pro, you can feel the quality of the device yet it is so impressively light considering it's made of metal and not plastic. The design is typical Apple with attention to detail and quality. Of course, they are more expensive than their competitors. I have not purchased the Apple keyboard ($149 for 9.7 and $169 for 12.9) nor the Apple pencil ($99) which I think are pretty darn expensive. The device is superquick utilizing Apple's latest chip (A9X) with the M9 co-processor. The battery life is up to 10 hours which is typical of Apple devices. My kids game on the new device, and my son gave me a two thumbs up when I asked him if he liked the device. The iPad Pro is definitely worth your consideration if you're looking to upgrade or buying a new tablet.

I bought this tablet (along with the Apple Pencil) as a substitute for the myriad of notebooks I've been using to take notes in class. The iPad works wonderfully, and the sound quality from the speakers was much better than I had expected!

I couldn't be happier. I upgraded from my iPad Air to the iPad Pro and there are some definite advantages. Not only did I need greater storage, but the screen is brighter, the speakers are great, and of course, it's rose gold. I never purchase without APLCare so I'm not worried.

I had an iPad Air 2 that I loved and ended up buying this for clinical to use with the Apple Pencil. The combo has been amazing and is great for me to be able to bring into patient rooms and take notes on. Excellent tablet and size, would absolutely buy again.

    A Must Have

To transition from a iPad Air 2 to iPad Pro, I am not sure if it is really the best move. Though I will say it is nice to have the better camera and the ability to use the pencil. Processing speed between the 2 is not that noticeable unless one is super impatient. We are only talking a few seconds at best. As far as the Large vs Regular size iPad Pro, I took a little time weighing my options and the large was to bulky for my needs. Different strokes for different folks, so you have to make an assessment which is best for you. Either one is great to have, this is coming from someone who has had every generation. Bottomline you will be happy as a Lark having this in your hands. Good Luck!

Excellent tablet. I feel that it was worth the extra money to buy the iPad Pro instead of the more budget-minded iPad. The 128G hard drive is sufficient for most users. I love the True Tone feature on the display.

    Excellent addition to iPad lineup

The new iPad Pro 9.7" offers some significant improvements over the Air 2 and a compelling upgrade from my current Air. First is Apple Pencil support which is only present in the "Pro" models. Split screen is supported which allows you to work in two apps side by side. Two nice hardware upgrades are True Tone which maintains a white screen in different lighting and the four speakers which improves sound when holding the iPad in different orientations. Finally, performance is sufficient to handle any web site or app that I use without bogging down. The old Air was becoming sluggish with recent IOS updates. In summary, for anyone who owns an iPad oder than the Air 2, or if Pencil support is desired, I think you'll be impressed by the 9.7" Pro.

The Best Overall Tablet in the World!

I feel as though I say this about every Apple product recently, but I feel that Apple is on a roll with their products recently. This an amazingly powerful tablet with lightning fast processing speed as well as quick RAM and SSD speeds. The speakers are wonderful as well. I haven't even talked about the display yet! Dr. Raymond Soneira really thinks the world of this 9.7" display. Head over to displaymate.com for more on this write up of the iPad Pro 9.7". This iPad Pro is for my Dad. He will be using it primarily for Aviation. The super low reflectance and high brightness of the display will make a world of difference in the air. This really is the best overall tablet that money can buy at this point in time.
