I used the Apricorn USB 3.0 to SATA adapter along with the bundled software to clone the factory-installed Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hybrid drive of my Clevo P150HM to an external Crucial M4 512GB SSD w/o issue. The transfer rate during the clone was definitely faster than USB 2.0 speeds but wasn't full USB 3.0 speed (in the 120 - 130MB/s range if I remember correctly). This is expected however since the internal mechanical drive just couldn't keep up with the SSD and was bottle-necking the transfer. Previously I used a bootable CD w/ DriveClone to do my cloning/backups but was pleased that the bundled Apricorn software could properly handle a full clone (including the swap and system files) while running under Windows 7 x64 w/o errors or issues. Cons: None - everything worked exactly as expected. Other Thoughts: Based on some other users' bad experiences maybe I just got lucky, but I would definitely recommend this product (and have). One obvious but easy to miss thing is to be sure that this product is actually plugged into a USB 3.0 port (look for the blue internal plastic tab) if you're expecting to get full speed. Also, another thing to watch out for is that some older USB 3.0 chipsets/implementations (like the one in my laptop) will downshift to USB 2.0 on ALL USB 3.0 ports if a USB 2.0 device is plugged into ANY of the USB 3.0 ports. So, if you're seeing sub-USB 3.0 speeds with a USB 3.0 device (such as this one) try unplugging any other devices connected to other USB 3.0 ports since that might be a way to get around the issue. Hope this helps.

SATA to USB Product--We're All Mad Here

Yup, the horrific technical potential of your laptop as the permanent scribe of your family history--dogs, cats, children, wedding, graduations or possibly even contact with loving grandparents from the afterlife, has succumbed to the silicon version of death. It's body lies helplessly before you and all efforts to bring it back to life (even during the Easter or Passover seasons) have failed. Even when plugged into its personal and loving AC adaptor it will never light up again to brighten your family history. But it has a soul. It's memories and algorithmic love of your family via intimate association with its fervent and dedicated internal hard drive have an embodied afterlife of sorts. And, with this cable, you can access the soul of your deceased laptop. It's fond and valuable memories can live on another computer as transferred files. This transformative process will require surgery, so to speak. It will be necessary to remove the still beating heart of your dead laptop in the form of its hard drive for connection to the above mentioned cable. Then all that has to be done is connect the laptop soul (hard drive) to the transformative cable, plug the USB side of the cable into the soul-sucking working computer, and transfer the files. The sun will once gain shine bright on your family history, the angels will sing--if you know the file structure of the beating heart hard drive. Peace...

There isn't much to this product other than the cable and the software on the CD. The cable is rather short, but pretty robust. Normally, I would complain about the length of the cable, but it seems that all cables like this have the same problem. If you want the data transfer software, don't buy this. Go download free and open source software like gparted or plenty of others. I have also heard great reviews about Samsung's disk cloning software, so you might check that out (though I haven't used it personally). Ultimately, you are getting what you need (it's plug-and-play on Windows). I haven't even used the disk cloning software and I don't intend to (I'm happy with gparted). Note: This only works on 2.5" drives as advertised (Will not work on 3.5"). I have tested it personally and wattage isn't a factor like I originally suspected (not sure why, doesn't make much sense). This is intended for USB 3.0, but it works fine on USB 2.0. I'm assuming that is why the length of the cable has to be limited (because USB 2.0 only provides 500mA per port). Hope this review helps you. The picture below shows my cable plugged into a standard laptop drive (Hitachi 700mA 5400 rpm HDD). Don't worry about the power delivery, it works.

Packaged as "Notebook Drive Upgrade Kit"

Same part number, package includes the cable and CD as pictured. It works. Just one thing: The instructions really need to advise running a full "Check Disk" on the source drive first, with both options checked ("automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"). At the end of my first cloning attempt it errored out because it found bad sectors. Had to fix those and rerun the software. The second time it worked without a hitch and I'm up and running on a new disk drive. Run a "check disk" by opening Computer, select the drive, select Tools tab, click Check Now and then BOTH options. Then reboot, grab coffee or something and wait for an hour or so, if you've got a big drive. I'm giving this product 5 stars because of past professional experience with cloning and "bare-metal recovery". As an IT tech and enterprise manager of 30+ years, I'm very impressed with this user-level product priced less than a fourth of what this capability used to cost. Acronis will cost you $10-$20 more without the necessary cable or box for the new drive. Granted this doesn't have a full list of options (and "select data" is limited, as apparently you cannot discretely select individual folders and files, just the "My" stuff), but for the advertised purpose it's right on the money. If you need to copy an entire 2.5" hard drive for full backup or hardware replacement, this will do exactly that.

Purchased to upgrade a Win10 laptop from 500gb to 1TB. The supplied CD wouldn't boot, but a CD produced by the program after installation did. Easy workaround. Unexpectedly, the Apricorn cable does NOT make an attached drive appear as a typical USB drive, so its only purpose is cloning. It would be nicer if it could also serve that "dual purpose". The cloning ran for 1.75 hours, encountered some bad blocks on the source and stopped, declaring that the cloning failed. The resulting drive wasn't bootable. (since the cable didn't act as an external USB drive, i wasn't able to see if it was mountable or had any usable data). If the source drive had been perfect, i'm certainly willing to believe that the clone operation would have been successful. But it wasn't, and rescuing systems from beginning disk failure would be one of my primary uses for such a system. (see Clonezilla, below) I was finally able to perform my transfer with Windows' System Image function to an external USB drive, then from the USB drive back into the blank 1 TB drive. System Image also hit the bad blocks and declared a problem, but at least the resulting System Image file did successfully create a fully functional system. If i were to try this as a Clone operation again, i'd revert to my old techniques of using the free Clonezilla package for the Clone (it *can* survive bad blocks on the source drive, and handles them intelligently) and an external USB drive carrier. The only reason i tried the Apricorn system was seeing it included (without cable) with some Western Digital retail kits. Oh, well, a cheap experiment.

This kit includes a USB to SATA cable and CD-ROM with data transfer software. This kit is intended for computers with a current working hard drive that needs replaced because it is beginning to fail, is too small, etc. If you can't boot your computer now you may not need this cable. It will not copy a hard drive that is not working. So assuming your hard drive is working the following will apply. Starting with the cable, this allows you to connect your new hard drive to your computer using a USB cable. The included software comes on CD-ROM, but if you don't have a CD-ROM drive you can download the same software for free from the company's website and run it from your old hard drive, or USB thumb drive. You can use the software in the operating system, or boot to the cloning software (advanced user method). The software walks you through a few basic questions and begins copying. Plan on about 30 minutes per 100GB to finish copying. This may be more or less depending on your system, but is about average for the many times I have done this. Once the software finishes the copy, turn off your computer, install the new hard drive inside the computer and turn the computer on. It should boot up like nothing happened, except a speed increase if coming from an HDD. Format or encrypt (more secure, scrambles all data) your old hard drive before disposal.

I've had bad experiences with drive cloners. It seems no matter what, the cloned drive will have problems. I purchased this alongside a 480gb ssd to put in a new laptop I purchased. Of course, the laptop did not have a restoration disc or even a Windows 8.1 licence key anywhere on the bottom (I could have downloaded the Windows 8.1 installer directly from Microsoft website and loaded it this way). It was purely on the recovery partition. Originally I was only going to clone the recovery partition but I figured it would save me time to do the entire drive if it worked. So I just cloned everything. And I have to be honest, I am surprised how easy it was and how well everything works. It's been almost a month and I have been using the laptop for gaming and work.I have had ZERO issues. The SSD vs the 5400RPM hard drive that was in it is like night and day. Load and boot times are fast. Battery life appears to have increased if only a little bit since the SSD's are less power hungry that the HDDs of old. If you need a good cloner, believe it or not, this is it. Get it.

    Simply doesn't work

Not sure if everyone is using this to clone a laptop HDD to a SSD as a replacement - but that's what I was doing. I had 2 different laptops - one with Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 7. Both have the older magnetic drives and I bought one of the Sandisk SSD (240) to replace them. If one worked I was going to buy another one. Well - the cloning seemed to work flawlessly but neither laptop would recognize the SSD (yes - I cloned each separately). No matter what I did in the BIOS - neither machine would recognize the new drives. So despite this being marketed as a product that makes this process easy - it's far from easy. I spent most of my Saturday on this and despite an IT background - I could not get it to work. After I did some further reading on this, it's quite apparent that this could involve registry editing and other very specialized tweaking to get it to work. Why this works well for some with no issues and no extra effort is quite baffling to me. Maybe it depends on the O/S or the make of laptop - not sure. Someone said Best Buy won't take this product back - I haven't tried. But how do you sell a product that doesn't work and then not allow it to be returned?

I purchased this to clone my Sony VAIO laptop's disk to an SSD from Intel, so that I can replace with SSD. Connecting the SSD and then to laptop was an easy thing. It is not plug and play - my Win 8.1 Pro did not recognise it as an external drive. However, the included CD has the s/w and the latest version can always be downloaded from their website. I downloaded the same and started the cloning process. The wizard was pretty easy to use and the whole cloning process didn't take much time - I had only 90GB data. I swapped the drives and started the laptop with the SSD in. Here comes the surprise - the laptop reports that it is a corrupted drive and cannot boot! Even after multiple attempts at cloning resulted in the same result. Finally I had to use my recovery disk and reinstall to factory settings - resulting in losing all apps that I had previously installed and had to download the Win 8.1 update again. I believe it may be because of the multiple hidden partitions that Sony has on their disks for recovery. So - three drawbacks: 1. The cloning was not perfect 2. doesn't work without the dedicated s/w - cannot use as a external drive adapter for regular use. 3. Very expensive for a one time use product

I was looking to upgrade two of my personal laptops and my tower to Windows 10, but wanted a “safty-net” if I did not like it. So I cloned all of the hard drives, and this did just that. I have used more robust cloning software/hardware in my commercial life, and was I bit concerned that this was not going to be up for that take. These concerns where not needed. The Software and adapter are simple and work well with a few basic options that will meet most home or small business needs. The only challenge is this product, is made to only connect to 2.5” drives and not full sized drives. This was OK for the laptops and the OS drive on the tower, but I still had two other drives to copy. This was because the USB adapter in needed for the software to work and the USB does not have the power to run the 3.5” drive. I came up with a work around, to power the drive from the PC power supply but connect a SATA Serial ATA Extension Cable to the Apricorn adapter. Cables used- SKU: 5880889 and SKU: 1310948129 (can be purchased on BestBuy.com).

This SATA cable seems to be very limited in the fact that many older computers as well as macs seem to have issues recognizing the secondary device linked to the SATA cable aka the primary hard drive u want to replace. Like other SATA cables u can’t use it for external memory support it strictly will only work with the software provided in the cd it comes with. I have tried 3 Seperate computers to intall a 1tb SATA hhd to boost memory in 3 older computers and all of them I failed to get them To recognize the device or the memory the harddrife has attached to it. A 32 bit windows vista a windows 8 computer and a windows 7 computer. Also I tried this device on a Mac for a ssd internal drive replacement for my parents and they had to take it to BestBuy because the entire Mac book just locked up. It has been totally useless our better off getting a different SATA cable that doesn’t require software and figure out how to do a file transfer on your own using YouTube.

AS mentioned in a previous review I had to add another drive to my computer, I am sold on SSD drivers. I had 120give drive for my system drive which was getting full, and 250 give drive that I wanted to use for my system drive and I just bought a new 250 gig drive that I wanted to use as a data drive. I used the clone option on the software that came with it and copied the data from the data to the new drive, and then copied the system drive to my previous data drive. It was able to copy all the data and I was to be up and running in much less time than I had imagined. 100+ give in less than our each was more than I had hoped for. I have spent days reinstalling the OS and software swapping out drives before and since this was able to clone and transfer everything over I was impressed. Only thing I thought was odd was it did not transfer the .ost files and I setup my Outlook accounts that I have linking to gmail accounts. No big deal though.

I bought this along with a new SanDisk SSD drive. I wanted to upgrade my 120gig SSD to a 250gig. I had a Samsung EVO 250gig SSD that I was using as a Data drive, I wanted to use it as my system drive since my 120gig was running out of space. So I transferred the data from my Samsung EVO 250 to the SanDisk 240gig and then cloned my system drive To the 250 EVO. Had both drives copied and the system up and humming in just a couple of hours. I was impressed at how quick and easy it was. I had read other reviews that dogged the software that came with it but they had other software and I didn't. I found the software that came with the cable simple and easy to use. Best $20 bucks I have ever spent and it was worth if I never need to use it again. In the past when I had swapped out to a new drive it took hours of installing software and never quite got it to the way it was. I am a very happy camper. Thank you Apricorn.

So the screen to my old laptop cracked internally and I had to purchase a new one. I had my entire life on my old laptop, and desperately needed to transfer EVERYTHING from it to my new one. Just as others said, you can have all of your data transferred in a matter of seconds!!! I simply retrieved the hard drive from my old computer, connected it to the data transfer cable, connected them both to my new laptop, and in seconds, my new laptop recognized them both and gave me the option to open the folder that contained EVERYTHING! I do not think I had to use the Apricorn download/CD either. I couldn't use the CD anyway because my new computer does not have a CD-ROM, so I was told to download the app from their website. But I do not think I needed it. Anyway, great product for 19.99, and this price was WAY BETTER than paying 160 to have someone else do it and browse through all of my documents and pics!!!

It works as described, but only that. It requires proprietary software (included) that is designed for cloning drives. It only works with 2.5" drives, you have to deselect what you don't want to copy. (I needed to consolidate files from older MB and GB drives onto my array of TB drives.) Your connected drive will not get a drive letter, and cannot be accessed by Windows Explorer or other file management programs. I exchanged it for a cheaper, simpler adapter that lets me plug it into any IDE or SATA drive, and without any driver or software needed, access that drive as a removable storage device, as I would expect. If you need to clone drives in a production environment, and only 2.5" drives, then this might be a good product to use. But for accessing data on whatever comes your way, this is not a suitable solution.

Hey, I'll just be honest... this gets five stars because it did what it said it would do and, thus, there is nothing I can complain about while maintaining my status as a reasonable person. That said, I tossed in that little "although" up there because this product is like a turkey sandwich. It's good... it may even be good-plus. But it is literally a thing that hooks between a hard drive and your computer and allows for data transfer. Instead of being excited to open it up, as I am with many tech products, I was more like, "Oh, gee willikers, I have to do that thing now, let me grab this thing." So anyway, if you need this thing, I recommend it. Just don't expect to have one of those epic Christmas morning freakout-style box openings that go viral on Youtube from time to time. This ain't that product!

I purchased this product as a way to access data from the hard drive of my old laptop. When the motherboard croaked I was worried about having to go through a lot of trouble to get back all my data. However, one of the Best Buy Geek Squad members showed me this device and I was very happy to see that it was affordable. In order to use the device for this purpose, simply remove the old hard drive (remove a couple screws from the bottom of the laptop, remove the access cover, and disconnect the data cable), and connect it to another computer via this handy device. You can now access all the data from the old hard drive. Another nice thing about this product is that you can use it with any old laptop hard drive for data backup. It's a lot cheaper than going out and purchasing an external hard drive, especially if you have a few old ones lying around anyway.

I can't speak to the software or utilities that came on the CD, I didn't need to use them. Once I installed the new hard drive in my laptop and got Windows7 installed, I plugged in the transfer cable into the USB port, connected the old drive and Windows7 recognized the old drive and I was transferring files in minutes. Performance is very good. Te drive appears in Windows just as another drive and using Explorer is quick and easy for moving the files from the old drive. Once completed with transfer, I reformatted the old drive and I have a drive I can use to backup files. This is not a "everyone must have" product, it's truly for those that need to capture data from a old or previously installed drive. If you are looking for a way to backup data from your primary drive, buy an USB drive.

One thing to note here is this is backwards compatible to USB 2.0. This worked flawlessly. I have a business laptop that the hard drive was failing and I had to get this up and running fast. This worked really fast with no issues. Everything was copied, all settings and so forth. I highly recommend this product. Just boot up your laptop, plug in the new drive to the connector and plug in the USB to the laptop. Insert the CD or you can download the program. If you insert the CD just run it from the CD. Make sure all the other programs, files, and so forth are closed before you begin. Follow the instructions and in a short while your drive will be cloned. Turn off your laptop and remove the battery. Then change out your hard drive and you should be all good.

We use this tool to clone customer hard drives when we upgrade their systems to SSD (see our other reviews for SSD). This works for PC and MAC. Bootable disc software is included and allows perfect duplication of an existing drive without affecting software activations. In fact, this kit allows you to clone a drive even when the original drive is larger than the replacement, so long as your original free space does not exceed the new drive's usable space. You can also just use the included cable to read and write, to and from internal drives via USB - and is USB backward compatible.
