NOTE: I BOUGHT THIS RENEWED!
This laptop is very energy efficient when tuned. Turning on battery saver and setting the panel to 60hz in windows, I can get 6-8 hours of web browsing with twitch streams in the background (with uBO installed ofc) and slicing g code files for 3D printing, which is rather heavy on resources in bursts.
The frame consists of metal in some parts and plastic in others and feels rather durable albeit heavy.
The lack of a MUX switch is upsetting to some but not a dealbreaker for me.
The RGB is cool I guess. Thankfully, you can turn it off if you'd like to save battery or hate "rainbow puke".
The plastic trim on the back left is a cool touch as well. I wish ASUS supplied a 3D file for this trim somewhere as I'd love to print some of my own in other colors.
The media controls are in decent locations and I appreciate their inclusion, but a lack of numpad will be a deal breaker for some.
After buying I upgraded the RAM to 64GB and the SSD to a 2TB one and installed my homemade Windows 10 install to it and benchmarked it. The hardware when pushed to it's limits is on par to a 3700X and 2060S when plugged in, and 2700X and 1660 when running on battery (at the cost of significantly shorter battery life). Raytracing is horrible on this tho as it is a 6800M which is AMD, so avoid if you want good RT (but frankly, RT is a gimmick). The 12GB of VRAM is total overkill, but frankly, that's not a bad thing (take notes NVIDIA).
Thermals aren't exceptional when maxed out (low 90s and upper 80s), but I've never seen any heavy power throttling or 100C temps so the cooling system is good enough by my standards.
This hardware is rock solid for the $1100 I paid for it. The USBC charging is amazing and should be a standard for all laptops. It can also have USBC-DP out and HDMI out. The IO ports on the laptop are shockingly decent for an ASUS let alone a gaming laptop.
Contrary to many, I never had any WiFi issues over many hours of wireless storage network file transfers and my ram issues couldn't be replicated as I upgraded the ram from the get-go.
Cons:
I do not like the fact that the screen part of the laptop frame protrudes ever so slightly when closed. Not a dealbreaker, but show's that Best Buy's and/or ASUS' QC could be a little better on refurbs. I tried bending the frame back but cracked the screen as a result. After replacing the screen, the protrusion came back so I'm just gonna leave it as is.
Another thing I dislike is how they push Armory Crate for their laptop. I like to keep as little bloat on my laptop as possible. Unfortunately, customizing the RGB also requires this for some reason.
Disassembly is also annoying as you have to carefully remove two ribbon cables when opening up the back panel. I tore one of the ribbon cable sockets off as I wasn't careful enough. A little glue fixed this but a "lego connector" or some other connection type instead of a ribbon latch would be smarter.
Lastly, There's a lighting feature on the ROG logo on the back of the laptop that I wished was configurable, but isn't.
8/10; a steal for $1100, but would look elsewhere at MSRP ($1550-1800)

This laptop has been great so far. I have been using it almost daily for about a month now and got it on the sale price $1099.
PROS:
- Very fast and responsive
- Keyboard feels satisfying to use and the RGB customization is really good and looks amazing
- Charging speeds are really good (I have it set to charge to 80% so the battery health is better over time)
- Display is really good, the colours and refresh rate make it fun to use. The viewing angles are also really good. I have not used the display outside under direct sunlight so I cannot comment on the outside visibility.
- Battery life is great for a gaming laptop, I tend to always have the RGB on (on static mode) with 75% brightness on, and it can get you through the day without a problem.
CONS:
- Device can be pretty hefty to carry around especially in a bag because the charger it comes with is really heavy (Although you can charge the laptop via USB C using any charger which is convenient)
- There is no numpad which can be an issue for people that do work with a lot of numbers, but a bluetooth numpad can be purchased to make up for that
- Easily picks up sweat/grease marks so if your hands/fingers/wrists tend to get sweaty it will show up on the keyboard and surrounding areas
NOTE: This is the newer model manufactured Feb 2022, so I haven't faced any issues with wi-fi, or the ram and ssd being slow. Also I have upgraded from a laptop that I was using for around 6 years so my experience will feel much different than someone upgrading from a recent laptop purchase.

It has been a month of using this beast. This laptop is giving an amazing performance on all the games I played on highest graphics. 12gb graphics is more than enough to run any game along with a beast processor. Overall, if you are looking for a gaming laptop, this one is a sure go.
Pros - Insane performance, great display and sound, handy shortcut keys, customizable backlit keyboard.
Cons - Super heavy (power brick also weighs a ton), on max performance fans get pretty loud, no webcam.
If you just want to buy a laptop for gaming purpose, I will definitely recommend this one as I got it for 1099 on black Friday sale, its and absolute steal.
I just wrote my personal experience with this laptop. I don't know much of the technical details to compare with but overall, this laptop is amazing!

This laptop competes with my wifes desktop pc, has a great screen, rgb keyboard, speakers are very good too. Easily a great desktop replacement. The only thing I dont like is the fan noise, it is expected with this level of performance to be loud though. Put on some headphones and enjoy yourself. Great overall price and performing laptop!

I've done a review of the other advantage G15, but i finally got my hands on this one.
Okay, 2 differences between the AMD Advantage Edition Strix laptops.
One is 1080p with 300hz refresh rate, this one is 1440p with a refresh rate of 165hz
This model has the Ryzen 9 5980HX CPU, the other one has the Ryzen 9 5900HX
Theres really only one negative about this laptop. It has a slow, 512GB SSD. Which just isnt enough storage for anyone. This laptop uses gen 3 SSDs, gen 4 does work, but you wont get the full potential of them, so save your money and get a gen 3.
Very upgradable, with 2 m.2 slots, 2 slots for DDR4 RAM, wifi adapter located under the SSD, and the battery can be replaced fairly easily.
Cooling is top of the line, dual fan, with 4 exhaust vents towards the back, and a vapor chamber.
When not gaming and using battery, this laptop can get well over 8 hours from just browsing the web, and watching videos.
Aside from that, the GPU is a RX6800M, which as far as performance goes, falls in-between the Nvidia RTX 3070 and 3080.
I should also mention that this thing is a fingerprint magnet. Get a microfiber cloth.
Lastly, as the title of this review says, get this on a sale, and do it soon! I bought this laptop while it was on sale for $1099 (October 2022) Just over 1200 after taxes. Its very possible that this laptop will be discontinued soon, so the next sale could be the last one. The 1080p model is no longer listed, so its a matter of time now.

Excellent bang for the buck

I bought this laptop to purely learn the potential of the AMD advantage(AMD-AMD) system, and I'm genuinely impressed. This laptop is a true beast, with unparalleled performance at its price range(speaking of the discount currently going on, along with the 3 free 40-60$ games AMD rewards). Note that this machine has the potential to be some of the greatest portable gaming machines in this era(yes, even in the era of AMD 6000 series and Intel 12th gen mobile). I fully upgraded it myself(man those LED ribbon cables, meh) with 2x2T Samsung 970 Evo Plus, an Intel Killer 1650X wifi 6-E card, and Kingston 2x16 G 3200MT/Cl 20 kit of ram. While testing with 3D mark TS, the whole machine can totally boost over my desktop with 5800x3d+3080 10g, with a 6-7Ghz on the CPU(and a 211W CPU package power draw). It definitely hosts its potential, and you can unleash it with a decent external monitor and a decent ram kit.
Pros: Excellent performance, bang for the buck, performance wise is actually greater than most RTX 3080 Mobile laptops thanks to AMD smart shift and AMD Smart Access Memory. CPU is absolutely a beast, constantly boost up to 5-7Ghz without liquid nitrogen, just turn on overclock in AMD Adrenaline and you are good to go. For wifi, as soon as I upgrade the wifi card, together with Game first/Rog Boost, I can constantly rob internet bandwidth from all of my other devices combined(950 Mb/s+ considering my plan is 1Gig, and my desktop PC and Zephyrus duo 16 get the rest 50 Mbs, which could be unhelpful if I'm trying to do work on other devices while downloading a steam game on this laptop). Also even though it's a hybrid laptop without eco mode, it can constantly outperform my Zephyrus duo 16 on eco mode(probably is the mini led screen? IDK really), the Strix 15 can last up to 8 hours If my boss put me at fieldwork, while Zephyrus duo 16 only lasts about 3hr 40 min, considering they are both AMD systems(I do disable the 3080TiM on Zephyrus duo for work reasons, as it doesn't provide enough color accuracy as the AMD iGPU).
Cons: No Mux Switch, Unstable Wifi Card(that's majorly Mediatek's fault), slow PCI-E Gen 3 speed(seems the chipset splits it to PCI-E 3x2 for each SSD instead of your regular PCI-E 3x4), Screen is only 8 bit instead of 10 bit, Still using the slow sluggish ram even we are past the parts shortage era.
For my set up I used all the hardware upgrades mentioned above, paired with a turbo IETS 5000RPM laptop cooler, a Uni USBC to DP cable, and the monitors are ROG Strix XG349C and Rog Swift PG35VQ.

Great specs on paper but terrible execution, the device overheats max ive seen it get was 101C on the cpu when the gpu is chillin at 50-60. I believe the problem is the liquid metal. I sent it in to get it fixed but best buy service department is trash and even the rep told me that they wouldnt do anything and do the bare minimum to say they worked on it. So ive made it my mission to steer people away from best buy as much as possible, i also will never shop at bestbuy again. The laptop is the same with temps reaching 99-100c when gaming. I upgraded my ram to 32GB and added 2 2TB SSDs, also i tired a Gen 4 drive and it didnt read it so only Gen3 as far as i know. Also for those who will say "well his fans are probably clogged", I clean my fans every 3 months when i clean my pc's (or more frequently).
I keep my pc in superb condition, if you want to do the same i recommend washing your hands before use since the palm rest is an oil magnet and i use an external 60% modded keyboard which fits on the palm rest perfectly and an viper v3 as my mouse.
All in all this is a good pc if you give it a chance, but not with liquid metal. Also wash those Cheeto fingers.

++ Dolby Atmos audio
Cons

This item has been on sale for $1099.99. My laptop arrived with no issues detected so far! It came with two 8gb sticks of ram onto the motherboard which is way better than the single 16gb stick of ram they were adding before. I still plan to upgrade to 32gb down the line however, this laptop is POWERFUL. What is even more amazing is how cool this laptop stays! I made adjustments such as disabling turbo boost and it stays around 70-76c in temps. Speakers aregreat as well although i wish the treble/highs were a bit better. It has no issues in the bass category. The chassis of the laptop is on the thicker side, however as stated before the laptop runs very cool! Overall a really good deal considering its Qhd at 165hz panel! GOW4 and Spider-Man look amazing on this laptop and can run on ultra qhd but again i do plan on upgrading the ram.

Great laptop for mid-level gaming. Even though it came with a 1440p display, many modern games I had to downscale to 1080p in order to get decent frame rates. I would also recommend using a laptop cooling pad to help it breathe a little bit better.

Very high power gaming laptop. Gripes include high temps, usage of liquid metal cooling paste, and software in general. My motherboard died on me mid game, but Best buy repaired it in a week or so. That being said it's great for the value.be aware there's no mux switch, so if you want full power get a usb-c display cable (HDMI or display port)

A Powerful Laptop with some Issues

I purchased this a week ago, picked it up om last Friday and has been testing it during the weekend. So far I am satisfied with it, but it came with some very annoying issues.
The Good:
This is a very powerful machine at this price point. I have an Alienware Area-51M R1 that costed 3.8K+ and had all the top specs at the time of purchase (2 years ago), this laptop outperformed the old Area-51m by miles. 3DMark testing score is much higher.
It is surprisingly cool. I ran Witcher 3 at 1440p ultra setting, and it was not hot at all. So far I haven't tested other games yet.
The screen is very thin. 1440p QHD.
The design is good, it looks very nice, and doesn't look cheap. The keyboard lighting is fancy although I almost don't care about it. There is a lighted label on the back of the screen too.
The size is reasonably. I has an ASUS ROG 17 inch and the Alienware mentioned above, both are huge. Traveling with the Aienware is very painful. Compare to those two, I feel this one is very portable and small.
The bad:
No webcam
Fan is a bit loud but acceptable.
The material combined with the black color of this laptop, attract finger prints easily.
AMD software doesn't auto configure game graphic (unlike GeForce Experience)
Now here is the ugly:
There are some annoying issues with this laptop, and if you know how to deal with it, you will like this laptop.
1. The WiFi Adapter. DON'T DOWNLOAD the Mediatek driver recommended by the MyAsus program. That will break your laptop. The problem with that driver is, everytime the laptop came back from sleep, it will lose the WiFi adapter. Then you can't open the Wireless setting, nor can you troubleshoot. And if you try to restart the laptop, it will get stuck at rebooting then blue screen. The solution is to simply let Window 11 take care of the WiFi adapter driver update. I haven't had any issue after that.
2. DON'T download the "Asus MultiAntenna Service". It is a Hotfix suggested by MyAsus. I found that after installing this so-called "hot fix", my download speed was cut down to half. I don't know what it fixes, but it definitely cause more issue. After uninstalling it, my WiFi speed got back to normal.
(Asus, if you reading this, your driver support team is terrible, they should find another job.)
3. Not sure if this is cause by Win11 or the laptop, but this laptop CANNOT use the latest Amd software Adrenalin edition downloaded from AMD official website. It can only use the older Radeon Software downloaded by Win11 update. If you download the Amd software Adrenalin edition from AMD, Win 11 will reverse it every time. I can use "roll back" to undo the Win 11 update, but I found that the Amd software Adrenalin edition will cause me not able to change screen brightens. The setting is still adjustable, but the screen is dimmed and cannot be changed. So far there is no solution, so I keep using the older Radeon Software.

This beautiful little beast was amazing at first, easy on the eyes, blazing fast, but in the end it was just too hot, artifacting and crashing all the time. Sadly, like any toxic relationship we eventually had to part ways.

Brand response from ASUS Answers
Posted .
Dear Nerdyconondrum,
Undoubtedly, it is an amazing laptop with a blazing speed.
We do understand your concern about the overheating issue, artifacting and crashing. It is normal for the laptop, with the same hardware configuration and regardless of the manufacturer, to generate more heat than normal while under heavy load especially during gaming, WINDOWS Update and antivirus scan. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full-throttle. Please ensure the air ventilations are free from obstructions in order to have an efficient air flow for better heat dissipation. While gaming, please ensure no resource hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely spike the temperature. The heat or temperature does decreases or normalizes once system resource utilization goes down. To resolve the screen artifacting, please install the most current chipset and video driver. Also, ensure Windows is up to date in order to optimize system stability and prevent it from crashing.
Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

Computer does exactly as expected; great screen, gaming is fast. Only issue I have is that I bought an "excellent" open box and one of the speakers is blown. I would like to think that this would have been found when the geek squad did their inspection as any youtube video sounds like it's coming through a crunchy box. But the computer and Acer are top notch.

This is a great little machine, for the price, at least. I got this on sale for $1100. The Ryzen 9 5900 cpu flies through everything from spreadsheets to development and database queries, and so far, it runs my current gaming obsession (Valheim) with aplomb at ultra settings.
While the 6800M is at this writing AMDs top mobile gpu, there are a few Radeon mobile gpus that best it (3070s and 3080s).
The QHD display is beautiful (imh0).
The machine is smaller and lighter than my previous laptop (a 6 year old Lenovo Edge 15) with the same size screen. Some may miss the numeric keypad, but I find it to be quite usable.
A couple notes: I said I like the keyboard and the display, and I do, but I have ordered a 38" UWQHD monitor (Alienware AW3821DW) so I can put two FHD windows side by side, as I find that ability handy for my development work. When using that configuration, I will close the laptop and use my newly acquired mechanical keyboard (Glorious GMMK2), which is delightful to type on. (I am using it to type this review.)
If Best Buy allows editing of reviews, I will update this review with information on how the 6800M handles the the higher resolution.
