Great phone, believe me.

I bought this phone for $159.00 at BestBuy last week, its a very good phone.
- The phone has a 2 megapixels camera BUT is takes great pictures during the day or at night with good light condition, it does not come with auto focus so the bar code scanner app will not work... that's okay with me :)
- I don't like the default launcher (but its not that bad) so I use the Launcher Pro, its the best out there and its free from the market.
- The default browser is good but I prefer the Dolphin HD Browser, you can watch videos from most sites, the screen is 3.2 inches but you can use this browser full screen and you are good to go. If you want to watch LIVE TV just install Skyfire Browser, then you go to www.justin.tv and you will be able to watch live channels, Skyfire is a free browser but to be able to use the video option you will have to buy the app but it only cost $2.99 one time.
- It has a good battery yes it does lol comparing to other android phones, it will last over a day if you turn off wifi, 3g and account/email sync, background data etc and only turn them on when you need them.
- The phone looks great, its a perfect size, not too big and not too small, its very compact and I don't feel like it is fragile. I will buy the skin gel cover for it, you can find it for $9.99 online.
- The speaker is good too.
- GPS, maps, messaging, youtube apps all works very nice.
- The 3G internet from Boost Mobile (Sprint) is very good, most websites load very fast, the mobile websites load even faster. Its better to use the mobile websites not the full desktop version because the mobile version loads faster and is easier to move around.
- There is no lag...NO LAG. Everything runs fast, opening apps, browser, phone dialer, screens etc. If you install the 2 MUST HAVE APPS ( Launcher Pro and the Dolphin HD Browser) then just make sure that you go to Setting - Display - Animation and choose NO ANIMATIONS on your phone. Now inside the Launcher Pro you can set the speed for the things to open, just go to Advanced Setting to choose faster opening/closing effect, this launcher has many options, it a must have app.
- The default keyboard is bad I dont like it, just use the Android Keyboard, its waaaay better for this size of screen.
APPS that I use a lot on this phone:
*Skyfire for live tv.
*Tune in app to listen to radio stations from everywhere, not just web radio but local radio stations from all over the world.
*Imo chat is great too, you can chat using yahoo, aol, msn, skype, facebook, jabber, google talk, myspace etc.
*Dolphin HD Browser, good to watch videos on many websites.
*Launcher Pro, fast and easy to use launcher, many options.
SO... out of 5 stars I give the Samsung Prevail 4 stars, only because it comes with a 2 megapixels camera with no auto focus and no flash BUT for the price range and no contract, unlimited everything starting at $50 also having the opportunity to have you bill decrease every 6 months down to $35 its a good deal.
Buy the Samsung Prevail, install the apps I wrote here and try it, if you don't like it just return it :) I will not return mine because I liked it a lot.
Ed.

Android user, switched from T-mobile to this...

I'm a 8 year customer of T-mobile and I had the Galaxy S before switching. This version of the Galaxy does not compare as far as features and screen resolution. Its not even in the same class. HOWEVER, what you do get is a fairly fast android phone, with a long list of usable features, on a fast network with an everything included plan @ $50 a month! On top of that, there are incentives that will bring the monthly down to $35 a month!!! It's definitely not the best phone out there, but if you need a decent android phone with a cheap plan that delivers, this is the phone for you. Its reminiscent of the T-mobile mytouch 3g, only faster and better screen resolution. The phone pays for itself with price that you pay for service. An everything plan with T-mobile was costing me $80 a month...in a couple months the phone will be paid for, AND I'M never looking back! Online setup could not have been easier. I was able to transfer T-mobile cell # and be up and running on Boost in less the 30 min...didn't even skip a beat. Boost has me sold with this phone and their service! Boost's (actully Sprint's) CDMA data network is much faster than T-mobile's 3g ( I had no idea what I was missing until now ) GET IT!

Good introductory Android phone
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I was an existing Boost customer that wanted a smart phone but didn't want to pay a $80+ a month contract rate. The Samsung Galaxy Prevail was the nicest of the Boost smart phones at the time, though now I see there is a newer one with a keyboard.
I like the Prevail's slim form factor; it is a pretty phone. The screen is clear and bright if a bit smaller than other popular smart phones but still plenty functional. So far, the phone has worked very well, but as it is an introductory Android phone there are some shortcomings to be aware of, and you must treat the phone right; overloading with apps or misbehaved apps will cause the performance to slow or even freeze.
PROS:
- Fair price for an Android
- Android 2.2 (Froyo) is a good version, will play most apps, and is fairly easy to use
- Screen is clear and bright and usually pretty responsive
- Boost monthly rate beats most providers, and the Shrinkage plan will make it even better
- Soft keyboard is good, SWYPE entry method is great!
- Lots of apps in the app store
- Voice command input worked really well for me
- Performance is good; obviously the higher-end phones are faster and can do more, but I've not had problems running a browser and email and letting Froyo run the IM and Twitter apps in the background.
- Build quality is good. The phone isn't very expensive but it doesn't feel cheap. So far the glass has been solid and durable. The sound quality is good. The camera is a little wimpy at 2MPs and has no flash, but does ok. Best of all is the slick minimalist design that features only 3 exterior hard buttons (power, volume, and camera).
CONS:
- Battery life isn't great and extending it requires regular management of active apps, not something novice Android users should be expected to do
- Onboard memory is limited, and the preinstalled apps either can't be uninstalled, or can't be moved to the micro-SD card memory. So while you can access lots of goodies in the Android app market, you can't have too many installed at once on the phone at once unless you move several to the microSD memory.
- Boost has disabled internet tethering on the device. You can root it but if they find out you could be banned.
TIPS:
- Install apps one at a time and run with each for a day or two before putting on new ones so you can know which ones work well with the phone and which don't. My Prevail ran great when I first got it, then a week later I installed Pandora which started freezing the phone up. I uninstalled it and the phone runs fine. Too bad because I like Pandora.
- Have realistic expectations with performance. I don't run many games on the Prevail. Also, the Netflix app exists and runs, but the audio and video signals are not synchronized so it's kind of unpleasant to use. I don't know if this is a Netflix app issue or a phone issue, but others have complained about it in the app store reviews on other phones too.

Biggest no brainer ever

Having been an avid Blackberry user for over 5 years, I purchased the Boost Blackberry Curve 8530 about 5 months ago when I changed jobs and lost my work Blackberry. I did a ton of research on the service and phone and concluded that the Boost $60 blackberry plan was the absolute best bang for the buck from a service quality / no contract perspective. The Boost plan gave me Sprint level service at half the price. I've been very happy with the phone and the service.
I then heard about the Galaxy Prevail coming out and after consulting with some of my satisfied Android-owner friends, I decided to break away from the Crackberry and activated my new Prevail about a week and a half ago. My optimistic (yet hesitant) commitment to this phone has paid off in a large way already.
The Prevail not only outperforms the Blackberry 8530 on every level from a software standpoint but it flat out embarrasses it. I had fairly high expectations for the phone going in, but I have been pleasantly surprised with its performance. I have loaded at least 15-20 apps on it and have yet to recognize any slowdown in the performance of the phone. Everything is far easier to read on the Prevail, the internet is noticeably faster, and the apps make the phone a far more enjoyable experience than any Blackberry I have used (which makes me very sad to say because I loved my BB!) Facebook is also fun to use through its app and it is very easy to sync your Facebook contacts over to the android contact list.
I have read other comments in regards to the phone when compared to other Android phones out there. I agree based on the specs that the Prevail has against other Androids that it would be inferior to many others on the market. Sure, there are others with brighter, clearer screens, better processors, and awesome cameras. However, after comparing the Prevail to my friend's Androids, I simply have not been convinced that their phones are worth more than twice as much per month than mine is. And that is with the contract. Most of my friends have agreed with me on this point and a few are considering making the switch (once their contract is up). The Boost (Sprint) service has been great for me so far here in Southern California and the call quality on the Prevail has been equal to that of the Blackberry on Boost and my former 8530 that I had with T-mobile via my former employer.
The one admission that I must disclose is that the Prevail is certainly no Blackberry in the keyboard department. That is because there is no keyboard, just the on-screen Swype or Stock Android keyboard that you can choose from. I have to say, like all other Blackberry users, this takes some getting used to and I am still getting used to it. My early evaluation is that if I am writing anything more than a sentence, I have to turn the phone on its side to type because my large fingers can't accurately punch the correct characters when it is right side up. If you write novels for emails numerous times a day on your blackberry currently, I wouldn't buy this phone until you test it out at the store first. However, if you shoot a few (or a lot) of texts/emails each day and they are relatively short in nature (2 sentences or less), you won't have any problems with the phone.
The last couple of positive things I will mention is 1.) the battery life - it has been very good for me, but I am very much a use your cell phone most of the day and charge once a day guy. If you are like this, you will have no issues with the battery, except for those initial four hours you would spend downloading the top 20 free apps from the Marketplace. Lastly, I have seen some reviews of the phone that complain about the size of the screen. Ideally, the screen could fit all the way to the edge of the phone which would be great, and perhaps in future versions this can be done, however, the general size of the phone is absolutely perfect for me. Some of my friends have these large android bricks that they hate to carry around and that was one of the positive reviews I have heard from them is that they wish their phone was this size.
Overall, this is an insane value for a great phone with great service. You also get a $5 credit on your bill if you pay on time every month. It incrementally reduces every six months, so after 18 on-time payments, you can conceivably have a $35/month bill; again with no contract. It is really hard to imagine paying Verizon or Sprint $100 -120/ month for a slightly better phone with a long term commitment.

fix if you phone is freezing

I have this phone for a week now, from the moment I received it was freezing all the time ,I was going to returned but boost mobil rep advise me to call samsung ,they instruct me to reset the phone by pressing the volume up and the power key (both keys press down at the same time until the Samsumg name flash twice ,at that moment you will get a menu with 4 options ,you select options by using volume down botton and select it by using the cam botton, first you need to use the delete all (remove micro SD before doing that to make sure you don't loose your data),all data including contacts and app installed will be delete, then after data is deleted choose reinstall android ,at that point the phone will restart (takes around 1-2 minutes) and the phone will be reset to default factory keeping the boost mobil activation , this process fixed the freezing for my phone but note this is not a multitasking phone maybe because has a single core cpu and will freeze from time to time if you try to run application with other apps running ,..

First of all, I thought the other reviews were a little harsh. You get what you pay for. If you want a top of the line phone, go pay $300 or $400 for one, but it sounds like they would still not be satisfied. I have been using smart phones for a couple of years now and this phone is pretty good for the price I was willing to pay. I have had no trouble with customer service and seem to get the help I need when i call. Boost has been good so far. The Galaxy Prevail came out with 2.1 os, but when I got the update it was way better. I am a big app user, but ran into memory problems. Which was a draw back but nothing i couldnt handle. The wifi tends to drain the battery so i disable it when not in use. I have had the phone for almost a year and it is still in great condition. I keep it in a case and put a screen cover on it. I do wish the screen was a little bigger though. I use it for almost everything, including GPS and directions, and its completely adequate, and that is after dropping it a few times. Still works like a charm. I will be staying with boost and will upgrade phones probably in a couple of months.

Great phone for the price

The price of the over-all phone was great especially since I had a coupon via my rewards card, so I only ended up paying $140.00 (not including tax and the warranty). I didn't activate the phone till about 2 weeks later when I finally bought the plan, which is amazing to get unlimited everything for $50 plus the shrinkage.
The phone over-all is great, there's of course a few flaws (which comes with almost every phone at some time or another) one of my biggest complaints is the battery life; it's not great for an android phone, if you're constantly using it as much as I do, the battery lasts less than 12 hours; and I even make sure to end all application processes when I'm not using them. Also when it freezes during a phone call, you can't seem to unlock it to end the call, which is super annoying, and every once and a while you get some small lag issues where everything can go slow, which normally I just reboot the phone and it works. Some people complain about the keyboard/swype, it's hard to get use to at first but when you get it down, it's fine. :)

Outstanding Phone on a Pocket Budget!

I love this phone. I've had it since (the MINUTE) it came out, and have been putting it through it's paces. Sure, it is slower than some of it's Galaxy brethren, and no, it does not have a super AMOLED screen. It's a sub-$200.00 phone, for Pete's sake!
The phone itself is esthetically beautiful. Sharp and compact, it has an elegant look and feel. The touch surface seems to be plastic, rather than glass, so I'd recommend a quality protector. I opted for the Zagg screen protector, well worth the twenty bucks asking price.
The camera is good! I've captured some great images from this and recommend the camera as good (albeit, a 2.0 MP). Have coupled this with a fewf well-chosen Camera Apps to get some very nice photos. For those reviewers around the web who slam this, remember - it is a 2.0 MP camera, they do NOT promise anything more (or great).
Freeze ups ... yes, some of what you've read around the internet it true, at least from my vantage point as an owner / user - there are freeze ups, from time to time. What I've experienced so far, has been sparse, limited, and for a few seconds at at time. I have never had to actually reboot the phone, so I wonder if some of the freeze-up stories may be exaggerated. I can say with certainty, this is NOTHING like the Intercept, and nowhere near what you'll read online.
I also have an issue with reviewers around the web, stating they experience "constant" selecting of the "wrong link", etc. I have experienced none of that, and I'm not a particularly advanced user. Perhaps these advanced reviewers are (typically) too smart for a "dumb" phone like this ... or maybe they just have fat hands.
Small Bonuses ... I found it odd that Samsung (thoughtfully) pre-installed a File Browser (My Files), and a Task Manager. The file browser is excellent, and I think it's great to find one pre-installed.
Though the jury is still out on Task Managers (some think they are great, others think they are not), I found this pre-installed gem to be much easier to work than others I've used (on other phones) from the Market. There is also a "Think Free Office" pre-installed - I went ahead & signed up then tested this out, and it's a nice little bonus.
This phone (and Boost service) were good enough for me to port an 11-year phone number (and service) from one of the major providers.
As to some of the negative "reviewers", commenters and nay-sayers out there: They can rag all they wish on this little device, as they rejoice in the splendor of their Droids, iphones and other superior hardware. I, on the other hand, have been very happy to find this, proud to own it ... and loving the simple, clean, no-tricks $50.00 per month of unlimited-everything service.
***As a side note, I also own an LG Optimus V (from Virgin Mobile). I have found this phone to be equal-to or better in many categories.

Great cell phone to be cheap!
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
To start this cell phone is pretty affordable in price. This cell phone is an Android 2.2.0 (froyo) with a bunch of applications you can down load for free. In a real fact many of them are not needed to be on a cell phone cause you can use them in you PC for example (Adobe, Amazon, Ebay, Expedia, Fill PDF, Fox news, Homes.com, Maps, Price line, Trulia, or Walmart ect..). Well, all of them have been tried using the web browser with no issues. For web browsing I prefer the Dolphin mini or Skyfire browsers (Android Market available). The quality of service depends on the signal range or strength. If you like to watch videos (youtube) you don't need Flash player for your cell phone because the Youtube app is installed on the apps menu.
Tether the Prevail is possible. Just go to Android Market down load Easytether app ($9.99 after free trial) To install this app go to settings, click on "Applications" then allow "Unknown sources", after complete the process on your Android phone go to this web site (in your PC) www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/android.html to update the driver software for your cell phone (Samsung). Look at the page the HIGH LIGHTED "down load desktop driver for PC, click on it and follow the instructions. Once complete the proper installations procedures connect your cell phone to the computer allow USB, go to the apps menu, click on Easy Tether app, allow it, then on your PC look for the icon Easy Tether on the software menu and click it. You'll see in the bottom right of your PC screen the icon Easy Tether, right click on it, the small menu will say "connect android" and click it. That's it!
This cell phone allow Flash player content (FP 10.1) but no for live tv. I tried the Skyfire web browser to watch justin.tv but the message regarding flash player need to install still on screen after install. To down load Flash Player 10.1 to your Prevail go to this web site www.androidcampus.blogspot.com/2011/07.app-working-adobe-flash-player-for.html ,go down the page until see "DOWN LOAD FOR FREE NOW" and click it. Once down loaded transfer it to your cell phone. Once in your cell phone go to your apps menu, look for "my files", then look for "flash-player 10.1 armv6" and click on it. If you receive a message "Install Blocked" click on settings and allow "Unknown Sources". After that the flash player will be installed on your Android Prevail. If you access the web link above and you see a "skip add" in the right corner of your scree click it till see the down load page.
I really love this cell phone. I play Words With Friends, Angry Birds (3 versions), Read the bible, use my Dictionary.com app, Contact my friends on ebuddy, buy movie tickets on Fandango, read my Gmail, take notes with InkPad, chat on LiveProfile, look on my Maps using satellite locations, Drive around the country with my two GPS apps(Navigation by Google, and TeleNav GPS navigation), listen music on Pandora and Batanga radio for FREE 24/7, updating my status of Facebook and Tweeter apps, follow the thunder storms using Radar Now, and watching my favorite videos on Youtube for Android.
This cell phone has many capabilities but if you are looking to do office stuffs on it, you really need a laptop or desktop not a smart phone!
The most impressive for me about this cell phone is to use the GPS while your Pandora or Batanga web radio are playing music. Also while the GPS is able you can access your Facebook, make phone calls or even take pictures for your trip gallery album. Now if you are making a phone call the 3G band is unable, which means that the internet service and web radio cease until the phone call is done. Also the apps logged on the web are not allowed to service.
My big concern about the cell phone is the battery life. To save some energy go to the apps menu, look on "Task Manager", go to Ram manager and click on "Level 2" , then on "Clear memory". Once completed the process click on "Level 1" to clean inactive processes. This is my way to make my battery work for at least 5 hours standard use, or 2 1/2 hrs smoking use. Also you can go to "Active apps and close all those you don't need to stay operating (Task Manager). Try also to adjust the screen brightness.
The cell phone design is pocket size. 3.2" of screen is perfect for good reading. Key board is king of small but with a touch pad pen works nice and smooth. 800 MHz of processing data is accurate to be a prepaid phone compared to some competitors. Most important to know is this cell phone has just 186mb of internal memory and 2gb SD card (included with purchase). To save some memory space go to the apps menu, look on "settings", look on "applications", then click on it, see the menu on "manage applications" , click on it. You'll see a whole menu of apps. Now, in the first column are the "Down loaded" ones, click one at time and select the option "move to SD card. You can do it with most of them.
Well, so far I recommend this cell phone to every one looking to smart phones with a smart monthly payment. Boost Mobile has a $50/month prepaid service (Unlimited web, data, email, nav, calls ect...) with shrinkage option. Shrinkage is a great deal! Pay ON TIME the phone bill and you get a $5 discount on you payment every 6 months till $35 bill after 18 months!!! Just think in a smart phone for $35/month (unlimited). To get the deal set it up you need to subscribe to AUTO REBOOST.

Fantastic Phone for Boost Users!
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I switched to Boost Mobile a few years ago due to it using the Sprint network and general good service for a no-contract company. I cannot stand being locked into a mandatory 2-year contract and Boost worked for me with all of it's low monthly charges, unlimited features including coverage and no-charge roaming (I travel a lot). I finally upgraded to a Blackberry Curve 8530 and while it was a step up from the normal Boost phones I previously had, I noticed that it still lacked in a lot of features and I figured I needed to upgrade. Then I heard that Boost was coming out with a Samsung Galaxy and I eagerly awaited it's release as I had seen friends' Galaxy S. So I picked up the Prevail.
All I can say is that this thing is awesome compared to any other Boost phone! Sound quality is great, and has most of the features you'd come to expect from a touchscreen smart phone from Samsung. I have yet to notice any lag with any of the apps I've installed (15 so far) and storage space isn't a problem as I put in a 4GB SDHC card to replace the included 2GB card. Videos and music run smooth as silk, games (including emulators and ROMS!) run quick, and the included GPS works like a dream! I still have yet to reach the full app potential of this phone but so far, everything I've thrown at it has worked seemlessly.
The screen is smaller than most droid phones but this doesn't bother me at all. The only effect it has is with the on-screen keyboard with typing. Using the swype method or turning the phone horizontal rectifies this minor annoyance. Battery life is generally pretty good but does drain if you use it constantly but that's to be expected. Wi-Fi is available to use for hot spots and it does drain the battery but the 3G data plan is barely noticeably against the Wi-Fi so it's nice to have both options. The camera doesn't have a flash which blows for night pics but honestly, I don't take that many and it works fine for pics with enough lighting. I haven't used the video feature yet but I've never had to previously and don't see myself doing so in the future.
In my opinion, this is currently Boost's best phone. Blows away the i1 (which has many drawbacks in comparison) and is a total step-up from any Boost phone (including the Blackberry). The payment plan is great with basically unlimited EVERYTHING for $50 a month including a shrinkage plan which can bump it down to $35 a month after 18 months of on-time payments. While there ARE better Droid phones out there, this one holds it's own in regards to features, service, and pricing.
Let's review: No contract, $50 a month (with shrinkage down to $35) for unlimited 3G data, calls, long distance, texting, roaming, Wi-Fi, Sprint network coverage, access to Droid apps, Bluetooth, touchscreen, and a whole lot more! I can't think of any other service provider that offers that much for so little.
Probably the best purchase I've made in a long time!!

I never had another smart phone before and in matter of fact this is my first time having one. This is good because I wont be trying compare it to another phone,
what I like about it:
I didn't have to pick up the instruction book to understand the phone because it was easy to use. the touch screen type of keyboard to some people might be too small but for me it works fine, but this depends on your fingers because I have met some people with really big manly fat fingers and if you have those then I guess you will have trouble with the touch screen type of keyboard.
the size of phone is perfect because it can fit in your pocket. I dislike a lot of these "thin" yet long (because of screen) phones, to me its a bit awkward to just put in your pocket... unless you wear baggy man pants which have those huge pockets.
the phone runs smoothly I have yet to have it freeze on me or have any delays when loading the phones menus or applications. I don't have 20 applications running and 4 windows open from the internet while i use the calculator or some other feature in which this case it might freeze I don't know, but for me it runs perfectly smooth.
the internet connection works good not too many complaints there. the apps are very cool especially for me who has never played with them before. If there is an app another phone has that this one don't I wont know, but it seems like the apps it does have are good.
The list can be pretty long so i will make the likes short and as for the dislikes:
the camera could be better in mega pixels, but I have never had a phone cam with high mega pixels and because of that it does not bother me too much, but for the price i would at least like a little stronger camera. PLUS I have a professional camera so I rather use that then any phone camera even if the phone cam had 8mp, but not everyone has a professional camera laying around.
I also have something that's in the middle and that is the battery life. I don't dislike it nor do I love it. If you are using the phone to just talk and maybe text then the phone will last the whole day even to the next depending how much you talk, but if you are surfing the web and multitasking the battery will last half a day. I think that is to be expected that if you are multitasking and running a lot of things the battery will die more quickly, but then again maybe there are other smart phones that may last a whole day if you multitask? but i doubt that.
this is my take of the phone and I love it. it is a great phone and at from what i am told a great price especially with boost shrinkage.

Great Phone for No-Contract Plan
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
First off, understand that I've never used a smart phone prior to this purchase. I've always used a plain/cheap phone with a monthly tmobile plan and lots of minutes. So I finally decided to move into the 21st century and get a smart phone, but at the same time I wanted a pre-paid plan that would give me everything I wanted at a price less than what I had been paying for a vanilla phone and voice plan only.
So I decided to sign-up with Boost Mobile and buy the Galaxy Prevail. I was apprehensive at first due to the modest specs on the phone and using a pre-paid service. However, I can now say after 1 month that I no longer need to look back. The phone is better than I thought it would be and the service is every bit as good as tmobile was (which is very good). Since this review is about the phone though, I'll focus on that now.
The Prevail is like a scaled-down version of the mainstream smart phones, meaning less in the way of technical specs, screen size, and features. But remember I've never used one of the mainstream smartphones so I'm only reviewing based on my experience with this phone. As far as I'm concerned this phone meets my needs very well. Yeah, it would be nice to have a slightly larget screen, but it's not really necessary (unless you have bad eyesight or huge fingers). I've downloaded maybe 20 apps so far (not many games though since not interested in that really) and the phone seems to handle it just fine. It has never frozen on me, but occasionally (when I have a really bad signal) it may just kind of get stuck trying to download something, but eventually catches up. Overall the performance seems fine and completely acceptable to me. The screen resolution and colors are also good and the voice quality and connections are great. In bright sunlight it can be a little washed out though (pretty much like every other phone I've owned as well) but it doesn't really both me since I'm not typically in the bright sun using my phone.
I've compared the signals on my tmobile phone (gsm) with Boost mobile (cdma) and they are pretty comparable. This phone gets signals in some remote areas where my tmobile didn't (which is one of the reasons for going with Boost and this phone). However, in every day life I seem to notice that tmobile tends to be better at hanging onto it's signal in subway tunnels and concrete buildings, though I can still get my Boost signals too, but they seem weaker and occasionally don't handle the underground areas well. Not sure if it's the cdma signal or the phone, but I suspect it's the nature of cdma signals.
Some weak points of the Prevail:
- It's not as good as a dumb phone for pure voice -- but that's only because it's a more complex phone, like every other smart phone. Sometimes swiping the answer and hang-up buttons slip my finger, and because it's got virtual keys for most things, it's just a little more cumbersome to get to the function I need sometimes while actually talking on the phone. Again this really isn't a knock against the Prevail, it's just smart phones in general I think.
- The virtual keyboard keys may be a little small for some larger-fingered people. I often will turn the phone to portrait when typing a text because the keys get a little bigger and spaced out. Also the haptic feature (vibration on the touch) really helps a lot, as well as the way it quickly lights up the key you pressed. Additionally, I've discovered the feature where you can simply speak your message and it types it for you -- and it really works very well, so that's what I typically do now.
- The screen may be a little small for some apps/sites. It lets you magnify +/-, but that can be a hassle. This would still be an issue with larger smartphones I suppose, but just less so than with this phone. Again, this is not a deal-breaker by any means -- just an observation after having run into some mice-type on some apps/sites.
Some strong points of the Prevail:
- It's smaller, lighter than most smart phones so very easy to carry in the pocket.
- It's just a good phone all around when you take into account the phone cost, no-contract/lower cost plans, size, and has pretty much all the functionality of a mainstream smart phone.
- Love the Speech-to-Text feature -- more accurate than you'd think it would be.
- Good speaker-phone quality and volume
- It does have gps, however, i just haven't tried it yet so can't comment on that, but wanted to mention the feature at least.
Now I didn't mention battery life under good or bad points because it can be excellent or horrible and I think I know what makes the difference now. If your phone is in an area with little to no signal it will drain the battery so fast. However, if in a good signal area the battery lasts a very long time. I've experimented with this. In one area with super-weak and sometimes no signal, I found my phone would deplete the entire battery in just stand-by mode in 1 day (no other use); However, I left the phone in my car for 3 days straight one time in a good signal area and the battery was nearly full after 3 days. In general, I find the battery life to be very good (I have decent signals in most of my normal use), so stand-by, voice/talk, and web use doesn't really drain the battery fast, so I am pleased with it, but I'm not a heavy game player or data user either, so take that into account.
Bottom Line: I recommend this phone strongly, unless any of the potential negatives I listed above are really important to you. I think it's a great choice for the average person to have a fully functional smart phone and the ability to have an affordable pre-paid service with it.

I Just Got this phone about a week ago. The phone works great, it is android 2.2.2 out of the box. Game apps work awesome with no lag what so ever. If your previously with boost mobile and own the motorola i1 it is a huge must get, I just sold my i1 for this phone, it has a 3.5mm headphone jack unlike the i1's useless 2.5mm, and the i1 only runs android 1.5. Unlike the i1 this phone does not have chirp like most boost mobile phones do and the only downside is the camera which is a 2.0mp. If your not huge into pictures this phone is perfect for you. This phone for the price is well worth it. Theres no contract so when you buy the phone its all yours for only 50$ a month. The service is great, never had a dropped call with boost mobile. and they have a nice monthly shrinkage. For every 6 months you pay your bill on time your payment goes down 5 bucks until you get to 35$ a month. It also holds up to a 32gb micro sd card. it comes with a 2gb. The screens only a 3.2 inch display but for me its perfect size. The battery life isn't too bad either, i take it off the charger early morning for work and it makes it until about midnight with atleast 20% battery left. Keep in mind that i just got the phone and i'm on it constantly. Hope this helps You guys out a little bit.

My Blackberry curve had broke so I was looking for a replacement and I kept seeing this phone when it was first released. I read every review about this phone, and to tell you the truth. If I had listened to those idiots ripping this phone apart and dogging it saying all the problems with it they've had I would have been very upset because I might not have got this based on their reviews! I absoloutly love this Samsung Prevail phone. I havent had One, let me repeat, not even one of any of the problems stated in other reviews about this phone about it freezing all the time, dropping calls, locking up! etc, etc. The small default keyboard that is on it when initially turned on can be annoying, but the app market has a free app to fix this problem. Just search " Gingerbread Keyboard App, which is what is actually on the Androind 2.3 system on those phones. after download, you'll be prompted how to select this keyboard which makes a world of difference!!!! This phone is great quality at a amazing price, not to mention the boost network's cheap monthly unlimited plans with shrinkage. Where else can u find such a deal especially on such a great quality phone. I would recommend this phone to everyone and already have resulting in numerous people taking my word for it and going out and purchasing their own galaxy prevail. So those of you Highly interested don't make the same mistake I almost did and actually take into consideration the bad reviews from few of the people who made those uninformed reviews. Trust me, If you're interested in this phone!!!!! Get it, I promise you'll love it! Especially now being priced even lower at $149.99! That's amazing! This is an all around superb and practical phone even to a experienced smartphone owner to this being your first phone of this sort.

If you buy this phone now, you can disregard a lot of the earlier comments. I picked up my new Galaxy Prevail from Best Buy during their Christmas sale for $75. This is a great value with Boost. On startup, I was prompted to update to Android version 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). That's the most up to date version for this phone. It also comes with Swype installed so the keypad is easy to use. I'm getting used to that after having used a Blackberry for years but got tired of their tiny screens. Battery life right now from a full charge is about 3.5 hours. Buy a silicone case and and a zagg invisible shield and you'll have a rugged and good looking phone that should last a long time. I haven't started installing apps yet so I can't vouch for the stability. I'll likely follow an earlier reviewer and install one app at a time and run for a couple of days to make sure it's stable. Picture quality is good, even without a flash. I took some good pictures in low light conditions.

This is my wife's phone, but I've used it enough to be able to review it (plus she doesn't write reviews). If you're looking for a top of the class Android phone, I would say look elsewhere. The Galaxy Prevail is an entry level Android phone, so don't buy this phone expecting an iPhone 4 competitor. It doesn't have a super fast processor, a huge screen, a high megapixel camera, etc. What it does have are good basic features and a great plan compared to the traditional carriers.
My thoughts/comments:
* Screen - Like I said, it doesn't a huge screen. In fact, for Android phones it probably has one of the smallest screens (remember it's entry level). However, its screen is very good - bright, clear, colorful, and responsive. I would recommend a screen protector though since it looks like it could scratch easily.
* Keyboard - It has no keyboard, at least a physical one. On the plus side, this makes the phone fairly thin and light. It does have Swype pre-installed which is a pretty good alternative to a traditional keyboard. It also has the default Android onscreen keyboard but I think that's okay at best. It does have voice input built in which is a big plus. It's pretty accurate (90%+ accuracy for me), and it's a heck of lot faster than even using a physical keyboard.
* Camera - Yes, it's only a 2.0 mexapixel camera but like mainly people have commented it takes pretty good pictures. It doesn't have auto-focus which means you can't use barcode scanner apps, so this is kind of annoying.
* OS/Performance - It comes with Android 2.2 (aka Froyo). No complaints here. The phone is responsive and pretty bug free. I'm not sure if this phone will ever get upgraded to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and I highly doubt it will ever get updated to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). But 2.2 is a very good version of Android. It also has a pretty stock interface (no custom skins installed) and only has a few pre-installed apps. Note that even though is has 2.2 it can't run Adobe Flash since it doesn't have enough horsepower.
* Memory - It doesn't have a ton of free memory (less than 180 MB) but it does come with a 2 GB micro SD card. Also, because its running Android 2.2 you can move most apps (at least parts of them) to the micro SD card to maximize your internal memory. You can always buy a bigger micro SD card and use that instead as well.
* Battery Life - Overall, I'd say this is pretty good. No, you won't go a week without recharging like you might for non-smartphones, but for Android phones it seems pretty good (since I myself have one as well as a lot of my friends). My wife is probably a medium to heavy user for talking & texting and a light user for apps. She needs to charge about once every other day or so. Of course, your battery life could vary significantly depending on how much you use it, what you use it for, what apps you have installed, etc. If you're worried about battery life, there are lots of tips you can find as well as lots of apps that can help maximize it.
* Plans/Service - Boost Mobile has been good so far. It uses the Sprint network, so you'll want to check coverage in your area to see if it's good or not. Occasionally there's a text message that gets sent slower than expected, but overall my wife has had no problems with it. The plan is hard to beat especially with the Shrinkage feature. $50 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data is great. After 18 months of payments, you'll "shrink" down to $35 a month - that's a phenomenal value. Plus there is no contract. I've heard that starting 10/6 they will increase to $55 a month so if you're on the fence you'll want to decide soon since they supposedly will grandfather the $50 a month rate for existing customers.
* Other - It doesn't have a proximity sensor which means that when you make calls you have to press the lock button to access the phone (instead of the phone automatically unlocking when you pull it away from your face). Not a huge deal since it's just pushing a button, but it's a nice-to-have feature that even many entry level Android phones have.
Overall, I'd give this phone five stars. I'd actually rate it 4.5 stars since the it lacks auto-focus and a proximity sensor. However, since the site doesn't allow for 1/2 stars, I'll go with five stars since those features are not huge minuses. Plus, the value when factoring in the plan is great.

I am writing my review from the phone itself. Its fast. Internet works fast. I can access facebook. love it. Boost cells used to have no internet. Takes good pics. Easy to use. The only thing i wish it had was pullout keyboard but swype is good once u figure it out. Best of all- Best Buy switched my phone over and transferred all my info from the old phone to the new phone fast. Traded in my old phone for much lower price. Can't lose with Prevail. Similar to the iphone. U will have fun with this phone. I haven't put it down all day. And for $35/month. #imwinning!
