Glass too Delicate, bad customer service solutions

We received this cooktop in September, and in under 40 days of normal use the edge of this cracked with a small knock from a pot of water being brought over to boil.
The black cooktop is difficult to get fully clean without obvious streaks, even with following the instructions. So many limitations as to what you can/can't cook or spill due to voiding warranty (no cooking sugar because if you spill any it voids warranty?!)
I got with Customer service to help with a repair or an exchange to a model that has the metal edges to protect from this kind of thing but they wanted to charge almost as much (2/3) as the original part cost. They also tried to offer an upgrade to that other model for an additional +$400 when the price difference is less than $100.
My wife cut her hand on this crack too, but they still called this a cosmetic issue (so it isn't under warranty), since you can still cook on it.
I don't think I will ever buy another glass cooktop from GE/Haier (and probably any other manufacturer) due to these limitations. A cooktop is the workhorse of the kitchen, and you shouldn't have to tiptoe around it so much.
