A note about a recent experience with Definitive. I purchased components for a 5.1 system from Best Buy a little under 3 years ago. I chose Definitive speakers because I liked the sounds compared with other brands I listened to. The pricing didn't hurt but was not my primary rationale. Since we all hear things differently I wanted speakers that sounded good to me, not based on the reviews of extreme, snobbish audiophiles. Because of the size of the room where I intended to use the system I bought the ProSub 800 for the subwoofer. All of the speakers I purchased have worked well and sound good to my ears, which again, is all that matters to me. The speakers also look nice. The reason for this review is that the ProSub 800 suddenly died last week. No sounds were being emitted. I called Definitive support to see what I could do. I spoke with a very courteous gentleman in Baltimore and in clear English I was able to discuss the issue. He asked a couple of questions and told me he knew the cause of the problem - the amp was dead. After ascertaining the version, as there has been a revision of the subwoofer since I bought mine, he asked for my address and stated he would send me a replacement amp and email me instructions to make the switch. I did not have to request a thing, no third degree, no demand for a receipt, no "I need to speak with my supervisor", not even a question about where I bought the speaker. To say that my expectations were met is untrue. I was expecting an offshore call center to tell me that it would cost more to fix the sub than to buy a new one. Massively exceeding my expectations is an understatement. That was last Monday at almost 5 PM in Baltimore, by Thursday the new amp was at my door. The switch was simple and now the subwoofer works and sounds great again. This review was the only way I could think of to thank Definitive for their excellent service. I will be buying from them again and encourage others to look at their products. Great job Definitive.

This sub is being used in a small bedroom 5.1 audio setup, and I feel that this is important for those of you reading this review. The sub itself is smaller than most and yet has many high end features to it such as the LFE out and gain dial options on the back. There's a volume dial on the side that's also nice for quick and easy adjustability, and there's always the AV receiver that can handle power output adjustments to the sub for extra fine tuning as well. Bass will add so much to the dynamics of your TV shows, movies and or gaming experience if you're not already used to having it. The Pro 800 has more than enough power to rattle all of my shot glasses off of the wall and then some. There are always other brands out there to look at, and for many out there, $400 for a subwoofer may be at the extreme end of your budget. I suggest however that you give it a try as this little guy really can deliver when it comes to sound output. Again, if you're not used to hearing much bass in your every day audio/video entertainment, then be prepared to be blown away. I've had this sub since about April of 2010, and have had zero issues with the unit at all. I have a feeling that if you purchase one of these subs that you're going to quickly fall in love with it. Definitive Technology produces some very nice quality products, and I for one am a big fan of their speakers. As for subs in this price range, I really don't think that the Pro 800 can be beat. They're very durable and should offer up many many years of satisfaction in your home.

The sub to my computer 7.1 system blew out and I needed to replace it. Having now been through two of these type subs, I decided it was time for a change, so I wanted to go with one desgned for a home theatre system rather than a computer. I looked online at my local Best Buy and the subs I wanted to look at were listed as not available, or like this one, "coming soon". I decided to take the ride and look anyway. I had a price limit, so I kept to that and asked the sales person to demonstrate those in that area. I didn't like the sound of any of them. I saw this one sitting on a shelf without any price or label on it. I asked if he could direct sound to it and it sounded the best. I asked how much it was and if he had any in stock. I was expecting a no answer, but he disappeared and came back with one on a two wheeler. It was in my price range, sounded good, and I also have a Def Tech sub for my living room home theatre which has provided good service for a few years, so I purchased it. Can't be happier with the sound, but I will tell you all that in the directions it states to turn the sub sound (gain) up to 12:00. I did that and I have to tell you that it is way too much and you could run the risk of damage. I would suggest only raising the gain to 25% and increasing it from there if needed. I have put it through several tests, listening to music, watching Live Free Or Die Hard using 5.1 DTS, and I have to tell you it has passed with flying colors.

So I started with a $150.00 subwoofer (private label through Circuit city). It was rated a 4.8 out of 5 so I gave it shot. Everbody said "great sub for the money". Well it was just that, it was extremely muddy sounding. Then I went to a Klipsh Synergy 10" for $280. Again great reviews, plus it was $120 off the $399 retail. Much clearer in sound, great power and fills the room BUT the sub had terrible definition for bass guitar. Sooo I finally just stepped it up and spent the extra buck to go to the Definitive Tech ProSub 800. WOW what a difference! Not only did the bass rolloff like a waterfall but the definition was perfection. The funniest thing is that this has to be the SMALLEST, MOST, POWERFUL sub on the market. Everything I saw was obnoxious in size...this thing is so small! So if you aren't able to hide your sub behind anything, this unit can easily be out in the open and not be a distraction. My sub is paired up with(2) ProMontior 800 front speakers and Yamaha V663 receiver. I also had (2) existing in-wall Jamo speakers for surround. All together the system sounds phenomonal for music...plus its all so small and clean looking. I have an open concept space (vaulted ceiling and loft). Combo great room and dining room is about 525 sq. ft and the sound radiants thougout the space. I would highly recommend this sub for $399, personally I think they could get away with $499 since it offers premium bass definition in such a industry leading small size.

I purchased the Definitive Technology - ProSub 800 8" 300-Watt Powered Subwoofer - Black. I already had a much older model of a Definitive Technology subwoofer which always performed excellently and still does. My A/V receive has outputs for two subs. Two subs ??? A great idea. I purchased a Definitive Technology - ProSub 800 8" 300-Watt Powered Subwoofer for a very good price and am very happy with the extra 'bottom' in my home A/V system. The enhanced bass adds quite a bit to movies with a lot of explosions and for music, too. If your receiver can handle two subwoofers, I'd say get the 2nd sub. Installation note: My A/V receiver has an 'automatic' system for balancing my speakers. However, this system does not recognise my 2nd subwoofer. No worries. The 2nd sub works fine, it just didn't get 'automatically' balanced. Like too much bass has ever been a problem.

This subwoofer is blowing my mind. I have had the mainstream subs, like Pioneer, JBL and Klipsch. They don't TOUCH this unit. It is way more power than I can use, I keep the side volume control about half way most of the time. The low frequencies are so even and solid, good sound quality. Matching it to a 3 piece set of Monitor Audio Bronze edition speakers at 80W each. The subwoofer is equally matching the front stage's sound quality. I have been auditioning the sub in stereo mode with just the 2 front speakers, and I have never heard my CD's sound this good. Do yourself a favor, and at least check this sub out before you go buy a mainstream brand. For this price compared to the others pricing, there is simply no reason whatsoever to not get this one. I run the receiver crossover around 80Hz, but the subwoofer also has its own crossover and volume for fine tuning. I didnt know a sub could sound THIS good.

With new SM350s, my old Velodyne CHT-10 was showing its limitations -- a lot of bass but not very clear. All other speakers in my living room are Def Techs, and they are great, so I wanted to go with Def Tech for the sub as well. After a few auditions in Magnolia, was assuming I'd go with a SuperCube III, but wondered if that would be overkill in my small living room, and at a hefty price -- decided to give the ProSub 800 a try at home, assuming that I'd return it and get the Supercube -- but to my surprise, the 800 blends very well with the 350s, sounds very natural. I don't care that much about rattling the walls and feeling like a tank is going through my house with movies, just wanted to hear good, crisp lows in music and realistic sound effects in movies. This sub does the job, and at a fair price. I'm very happy that I gave this sub a try!

I have this little guy paired up with my pro800 fronts, pro600 surrounds, and procenter1000, running through a Pioneer AVR, and the bass is thundering! These subs are so small and easy to hide, but dont let size fool you, they generate massive power! Just watch a battle scene from Gladiator, or LOTR for instance and you will feel it reverberate through your chest! They work best if you run your front speakers through the back and then through the receiver, which may be a little extra wiring but well worth the hassle in IMO. They look very nice as well. Crossover works perfectly and auto on and off makes it easy and works flawlessly unlike some other brands i have had before. Get one if you can!

This is a decent sub for low volume movies and music, unfortunately, due to it's small size, it distorts at higher volume. A larger speaker with a bigger amp is really needed to give you that boom you desire for your music at higher volumes. I primarily used this speaker for music and it just did not cut it. It was surprisingly clear at low volumes but again, turning it up a notch, and it distorted considerably. I own a pair of Definitive Technology Studio 55 speakers, and they are by far the best speakers I have heard in a long time. I initially purchased this sub to pair it with these speakers. I exchanged this sub for a larger 12 inch sub from a different manufacturer and am satisfied with the sound I got out of the bigger speaker.

We installed a middle-range system in our small living room (a Marantz NR1402 250W receiver and two MartinLogan Motion floor speakers) to go with our 55" Sony Bravia TV, and it was great sound, but we knew a subwoofer would be the icing on the cake. The Geek Squad installer had a Def. Tech. ProSub 800 on-hand in his truck. He installed it for us to show the difference in sound, and WOW, it's amazing! And after having it almost two months, it's all broken in now, and it catches every low noise the movies and music have. I didn't know what I've been missing all these years, sound wise. It's just amazing and I couldn't suggest it more, especially for a smaller room that's not more than 400 ft. square.

I've been very pleased with our three Pro 800 subwoofers. The only reason I did not rate this five stars (which the unit deserves based on the audio performance) is that the power supply in the unit is apparently a "dirty" switching power supply that puts out electrical noise (EMI) into my home electrical wiring, thus interfering with my light control system. I had to purchase a line filter (one that the unit plugs into) to prevent this noise from transitioning to the rest of the house. The other two Pro 800s do not exhibit this behavior, but the fix cost me $18.99.

This sub produces good punch, especially for its small size. This sub has a sealed enclosure with a "low bass radiator" on the bottom. This setup can cause the speaker to "hop" around at high levels when placed on a smooth surface. I use it in my 5.1.2 system. For my taste, it is excellent for home theater, but not as enjoyable for just listening to music, as I prefer a ported sub for music listening. Overall a solid choice if you need a sub in a small space.

I bought this as replacement to another 8" subwoofer. The sound is great and the size great for subwoofer since it is not intrusive or overly large for rooms where space is limited. For instance, this great for a living room that functions primarily as a living room with a home theatre system being secondary. However, it's power is less than my previous subwoofer, but then again this subwoofer is 30% of the price, hence, the tradeoff. For an exclusive use theatre room, where compact and inconspicuous size is not important, I would not buy this and rather go with a more powerful subwoofer, albeit larger footprint and put it in the corner.

I was very pleased with the sound the 8" woofer produced, but I ended up having to exchange it due to all the rattling the subwoofer enclosure made. I noticed the legs on the enclosure were screw ons and I had them tightened real good, but they would still loosen up and start causing the box to annoyingly rattle. I even tried sticking felt pads on the bottom of the legs, but the box still rattled. AND during loud scenes in action movies, the box would rattle so much and move/bounce around the floor. I ended up upgrading to the ML Dynamo500. If it weren't for the rattling, I would have been pleased with the subwoofer.

This subwoofer is an excellent choice for a small to medium sized room. It is attractive and doesn't take up much floor space. Bass notes are crisp, not at all muddled and can be quite booming when the volume is turned up. I particularly like the volume control knob on the side near the front, rather than in the back, which is usually placed against a wall and hard to access. There is no phase control, but it sounds very harmonious with my medium sized Boston bookshelf speakers. A great choice at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.

I was nervous about the 8" sub being too small for my living room. I was pleasantly surprised after getting it set up properly. I have seen some reviews of the definitive subs going into sleep mode even when music was playing. This happened to me at first after using the microphone set up with my Yamaha receiver. Eventually I found out that I had the sub turned up to full power during set up, so the receiver compensated and set the signal so low that the sub thought the music was off. I re-ran the set up with the sub at the recommended 50% power. -- All good. :)

The DefTech ProSub 800 is a really good sub. Before purchasing I read the online reviews of the sub and then auditioned it at my local Magnolia store. The sub played well in the listening room and in my home. My only complaint was that it required more volume to produce the low bass that I wanted since it is a tight sub. It is a good size for small rooms. If not set correctly it will bounce across a wood floor at moderate volume as a testament to its power moving the bass diaphragm on the bottom of the sub. This powerful sub did not suit my needs but it is definitely worth a look.

Took some adjusting and settings to get it work well with my other sub but after a few days I really started to love the sub. Does not work well on a hardwood flooring without it sitting on some carpet. The passive bottom firing radiator will make the sub dance all over easily. Especially with scenes in the movie "Interstellar" Its well built and I kinda like the side mounted volume control but I think it would be better if it was top mounted. Its exceptional tighter than my 10" ported sub its paired with when it comes to lower end bass

Other reviews indicate this unit is capable of removing pictures from the wall. This is an accurate statement.. We run ours between 1/2 and 3/4 volume (located conveniently on the side) and have PLENTY of bass. We have hardwood floors, and have not experienced the "vibration" issue mentioned in other reviews. This subwoofer is sold as part of the Definitve Technology ProCinema 800 series, which includes 4 of the 800 series bookshelf speakers, this sub and the 100 series center. Best Buy matched internet pricing, and I saved some $'s and have an EXCELLENT sound system! Go to BB, and let your ears be the judge!

This DefTech ProSub 800 is a good subwoofer although it did not fit my application. I wanted an 8" sub that would be used in the LR to fill in the bottom end to my ceiling speakers. This is not a HT room and is mostly used for listening to music while entertaining or working around the house. In order to really get the bottom end, I had to turn up the volume and the sub bounced across my wood floor. Don't get me wrong, this sub is really great musically...it just did not give me what I was looking for.
