    Building a sub-$1K i5/32GB RAM/Dual-SSD 2-N-1

Most of my work are business applications, database programming, and running virtual machines for programming sandboxes. I occasionally watch videos. No gaming. Thus, here are the criteria for the replacement for my Latitude E6420 (i7-2720qm/16GB RAM) of 6 years: Must haves: . Intel 8th Gen i5/i7 (4-core/8-thread) . RAM Upgradable to 32GB . Room for 2 drives (M.2 and 2.5" SSD) . 14" or 15" (big enough as the 2nd screen, small enough for occasional travel) Nice to haves: . Light-weight (occasional travel) . Touch screen Of course, the price always matters. After researching models from Dell/Lenovo/Asus/HP, I decided on the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series: . i5/i7 8xxxU CPU's for better power consumption and thus potentially better battery time . Thin bezel screen (much better than the 5000/3000 series) . The Inspiron 15 7000 2-n-1 (i5-8250U/8GB RAM/256GB M.2) was on back-to-school sale for under $700 at Bestbuy I would have been happy with the regular 15 7000 as it is lighter. However, having the touch-screen and 2-n-1 is good for the occasional screen sharing. I upgraded the RAM ($302 Crucial 32GB kit on Amazon) and put my old SSD (750GB) in as the 2nd drive. Using my old Windows 7 Pro product key I got a free upgrade to the Windows 10 Pro edition. Thus, for under $1000, I got myself a i5-8250u/32GB RAM/Dual-drive 2-n-1 laptop running Windows 10 Pro. Btw, after reading a ton of reviews of the new crop of 8th Gen i5/i7 8xxxU laptops, I concluded that i7 is not worth the extra $ as the performance advantage becomes less critical once the operating temperature starts to constrain the CPU speed.

So far, this is a great computer for homework in my online college classes. I had to replace my 4 year old HP, and I got a great deal on what I didn't realize at first is a great 2-in-1 laptop. It has all of the features that I wanted (pretty big screen, touch screen, and a decent amount of memory for my needs). And I got a lot of Geek Squad assistance from first (my defunct laptop) to last (my lovely new laptop).

I bought the first computer and had to take it back because of the speakers wasn't working right and it was slow. So they looked at it and got me another computer and I love it. It is so fast and works great. Thanks Geek Squad.

The computer overall is amazing. Light, Fast and quick to load and use. One drawback is the brightness of the screen is not great and combo'd with the reflective screen makes it hard to view in some situations.

Two main reasons we bought this PC were the responsiveness & the ability to use a pressure sensitive pen with the touch screen in tablet mode at a reasonable price. Both work exceptionally well. The boot time is signficantly better than a rotating drive, responsiveness wit hthe RAM & i5 is very good. Pressure sensitive pen works great. Display is adequate but not outstanding. This is not a gaming PC & is on the heavier side of the 2 in 1's, so don't buy to use as a tablet only - but if you want a well constructed, responsive PC with pen functionality - this is a great PC for the price.

I had a Hewlett-Packard laptop which died unexpectedly and decided on this Dell laptop due to bad experiences with the HP. Its 15.6 inch screen is a decent size and doesn't require a lot of room. The touch screen was new but I'm adapting. Everything is well arranged and comfortable. It's very quiet due to the solid state drive. I like the Dell brand because they don't include proprietary "bloatware" like HP does. The only "minus" is the lack of a CD/DVD drive.

Great computer for students. Has touch screen capability and you're able to even use like a tablet. Easily fits into your backpack, pretty lightweight. Takes some time to get used to if you're a Mac person.

Bought on clearance. Fantastic for the price. No reason you would need any more speed or power unless you were graphics-heavy. Only wish instruction manual was included.

After using a Mac for the last eight years, it has been an adjustment going back to a Dell. I was frustrated with the facial recognition feature until I reset it a few days ago. I have also had a few issues adjusting to the touch pad. It is very sensitive and even sent a couple of emails before I was ready. I have also had to readjust how I use it because on the Mac I could use the entire pad to click on things, but on the Dell there is a definite right/left click (which I originally thought I would prefer). I may just need to get more used to it. It is definitely faster than my old Mac, as most browsers were no longer supported. I will need to use it a while longer before making my final decision on preferences.

My dell laptop has exceeded my expectations. It is very fast and comes with lots of extra stuff. Only negative is that it does not have a right sided numerical pad. The numbers are at the top over the letters. Just something I have to get used to.

I’ve had this laptop for a few weeks now. I am still enjoying it. The solid state hard drive makes the laptop very fast. I can boot up the computer and get to work in probably 30 seconds. I’m able to use all of the programs I need for graduate school in engineering as well. The design also feels sleek and sturdy. I’m liking this purchase.

This unit has everything a person needs to get a well rounded computer. Mid grade processor, enough ram, and most important a solid state drive. If anyone is considering a new computer make sure it has a sold state drive. Its worth the extra few bucks.

I shopped for laptops for a handful of months before purchasing this one. I was fortunate enough to find an open box one and saved a fair amount over new price. Works great, has a phenomenal battery life for every day use. For day to day business owner this works fantastic for my needs. Can't justify paying much more when it's not necessary for these $1,000 laptops that are out now with barely much better spec.
