    Another Terrific Denon Product

I've had an older Denon 5.1 receiver for...let's say 15 or 17 years, always worked flawlessly, used the multiple zones, the whole shot. Plenty of power, really capable. So when I finally got off my wallet recently and bought a new gigantic TV, I thought it might be time to update the receiver, as well. I chose this one for a few reasons: the price, completely reasonable. The name...I've had numerous Denon products over the years and have been happy with them, without exception. I'm an Apple user - don't be a hater now, I'm very familiar with other stuff, too - and I have iPhones, MBP, iMac, TC, etc., along with a couple of little Airport Express units strictly to run audio to remote systems via Airplay 2...which I really love, works fantastic with iPhone, selecting multiple destinations, sets individual volumes, super responsive, all good. So I thought it might be nice to have this available to me in a new receiver, as well, which this one does, and it works wonderfully. So the good news is, everything to do with this receiver works, again, flawlessly. The little mic setup for evaluating speakers and placement, including the actual 'setup program' built into the receiver...fantastic. Even checks phase. Sounds great. Works great. The GREAT news, though, is that apparently manufacturers have been working a little bit harder in terms of MUCH more easily allowing control over other devices. So the new Samsung TV and remote were able to immediately detect and control the Denon, do all the various routing magic (and also control a Sony blu-ray). The whole thing just really couldn't have been much easier. I have achieved the impossible dream: one single remote to control the TV, over the air channels, streaming channels, DVD, and audio for the whole shebang. Nirvana. So I can't recommend this receiver much more highly. I was gonna pop for the next unit up, but really have no need for more speakers, and while I probably would've appreciated the extra power/output - cause there's no replacement for displacement where it comes to amps, and this is coming from a musician that's all about really big amps - this unit is plenty powerful, sounds great with my entirely adequate speakers, and was again, just so reasonably priced. Buy with confidence! Just my opinion.

I like how this receiver sounds. I have Martin Logan Vignette and Encore speakers and a Dynamo subwoofer and it drives them just fine. My previous AVR’s have been Yamahas and setup is a little easier with the Denon. Streaming with HEOS can be a bit buggy. I have the receiver connected to my network via Ethernet and sometimes the music will just stop and I have to turn off/on the Denon to get streaming working again.

I bought this to replace a Denon receiver I had had since 2003. I was very happy with it. I bought this out of brand loyalty, and so far it’s performing very well. Set up was pretty easy. The onscreen directions are straightforward and the Audyssey speaker balancing program was pretty painless to use. I am very happy with the sound and picture quality. Surprisingly, it sounds very similar to my previous Denon, which is a good thing. I am enjoying the new features too, like streaming internet music. I strongly recommend this receiver and will remain a loyal Denon customer.

Very happy with the receiver! Very easy to setup and use with Directv and great match with my Samsung 7000 series TV. Powers my Paradigm speakers adequately but wish I would have bought the next model up with a little more power. 4k pass through is excellent.

Does everything I wanted! Perfect for my office/bedroom. I stream music from my PC when I am in the "office" using my my TV as a monitor with great sound. Then great surround sound when I watch movies or TV. The ease of setting up the system was remarkable; unlike my old system. The "eARC" is my biggest surprise, since I didn't know the unit has it. Now I can get surround sound when streaming from my TV, Previously I had to use my TV's speakers (ugh). A great system for the price and perfect for smaller rooms.

Good quality sound. Build quality is good. One thing that's not so great is that the source switches to elsewhere on its own. And secondly, the onscreen setup menu interface looks 90's old.

I’ve been so excited since I got this home. It’s probably more than I need, but it works great with my small TV room. It works with Alexa which was an unexpected added feature. I’m a novice with this type unit. Still learning. It does way more than I ever dreamed!

I received my Denon AVR-S650H in a little over a week after placing my order. This replaced a JVC 5 channel Dolby Logic receiver from 1995. It was difficult to find a retailer that had it on hand. It took me roughly 6 hours to remove my old system, run speaker wire, HDMI and power cables, and set it up for the Denon quick installation. The Denon quick install process is a pain, but I understand why it is done in specific steps. This isn't an old school receiver, where you connect everything, adjust balance, treble, and bass and you are done. The quick install guide takes roughly an hour, which includes the AVR performing its tonal set-up for optimal sound. You need to place a smile mic in 6 different locations to let the Denon software optimize sound settings with your speaker location. Otherwise, you will need to grab a tape measure, and navigate through the manual installation. I am running a 3.1 system due to a not so ideal iving room configuration. I will upgrade to a 5.1 or 5.2 system in the future. I am using Polk Signature Series S35 Center channel, S15 Bookshelf L/R channel, and a Polk PSW-10 Sub. I was initially disappointed when I watched my new Spartacus 4K blu-ray. The picture was superb with my Sony UPB-X800 BD player and Sony 55" Bravia 4K tv. The HDR color was great, but the sound was poor. I had read a few reviews that said this AVR is under-powered and I thought I made a bad decision. I had played side one of AC/DC Back In Black on my turntable after initial set-up and wasn't impressed. And now to the 4 star rating... The previous two weeks, I had studied and researched the Denon S650H. I read reviews and the Denon online owners manual. It does a decent job of explaining what each function does. What it lacks: which items to initially turn on or off to get the best sound and power out of the AVR. First, download the Denon app, which I did immediately upon install. The secret to it's power, is the EQ. You must turn the EQ on to get optimal power and sound. Obvioulsly! Right? Go to the "Audio" controls with the remote or app, go to "Audyssey," set "Multi EQ, Dynamic EQ, Reference level when Multi EQ set to Reference, and Dynamic Volume." Play with the settings on different types of programming and music inputs. Also, select "Options" icon on the app, bottom right hand corner, and adjust dB levels for individual channels. Unfortunately, I discovered this frustratingly, after turning the volume up and down 20 to 30 times during the 3+ hour long Spartacus 4K blu-ray movie. I hope this review helps you. It is a nice AVR. You just need to use it for a few days to familiarize yourself with all the options.

Super simple setup, works perfectly with my Samsung TV, both turn on and off with the TVs remote without doing any setup on the TV. Make sure you run it through your TVs correct ARC hdmi port to get the sync, it should be marked differently. The recoever setup works but as others said it looks like it was created in the 90’s. Keep the mic, you don’t want to lose it if you change speakers. i put it in the cabinet next to the reciever. The paper thing is dumb, just hold the mic for the setup process. Plugged it into Klipsch reference speakers as a 2.1 system for now.

Purchased this unit to upgrade from my in home setup (3.1 speaker setup). Very easy to follow tuning set up to create the best audio for my seating area. Thankfully, I discovered that my center speaker was blown out, which was unnoticeable with my old unit. Spoifty works flawlessly (after network setup is established). And works well with my Samsung q60 (power on/off, arc connectivity). Overall power is much better than expected.

Bought this to replace an Onkyo that survivied 15+ years. I was looking for a 5.1 receiver with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. This has 5.2 Channels, has WiFi as well as ethernet slot, and Bluetooth. So, it checks all of my basic requirements. It's being used to power 2 standup in the front, a center speaker, and 2 rear surround speakers, and I connected a powered sub to it. I'm only using the single HDMI passthrough being fed by a HDMI hub since I wanted to be able to passthrough multiple (5) inputs (to have the option of just using the TV sound without turning on the receiver). This receiver only has 1 HDMI passthrough. I don't see anything in the market that has 5 passthroughs, so this is the only way to do it. I have the receiver connected to both Alexa and Google. I can voice command some simple instructions like changing the volume. I can tell Alexa/Google to play music on the receiver and it'll turn the receiver on, connect through wifi, and start playing. I can also send music from my phone to play on the receiver. Overall, easy to set up and use these features. There is also an app available to control your receiver. I used it to adjust volume to the surround speakers because I felt they were softer than before. You can't do EVERYTHING on the app, it's just ok. I don't hear any difference in sound quality from my old Onkyo. But, that's a good thing since it sounds very good. Overall, the features are solid and performance is solid.

Replaced an integrated sony home theater 5.1 system. Great feature set, sounds fantastic, easy to setup and use. A little underpowered, gets the job done just fine for a basement home theater but won't overwhelm - which, is just right. Airplay 2 and streaming music services are super convenient, as are the 5 hdmi inputs!

    1. Great sound quality with old speakers. 2. Compatibility with smart devices clime Apple TV and cast. 3 Easy to set up. Apple TV remote can control the volume. Required Active Subwoofer though. I couldn’t attach my old sub. One would think it would work provide both options. I didn’t take it off the rating for this cause I didn’t do my research but it’s just a though.

Purchased this receiver to power my new SVS Prime Pinnacle speakers, Apple TV 4K, Samsung Blu-ray and 55” Samsung 4K TV. Set up was so simple with the on screen step by step process. Plenty of power that make my speakers shine and the video quality is top notch. For just under $400 I find it to be an excellent value.
