I had to change batteries twice for some reason and is hard to understand settings of ecobee to set temperature. If given a chance, I would switch to Nest

The device is ok, their service and servers are down to frequently and app crashes or gets disconnected all the time. I should have bought a nest

This has some very cool features. It was fun to show friends and the Alexa was cool. However the WiFi stopped working. (I was okay living with that even though that is why I bought the unit) a few weeks later the whole device stopped working. Trying to get a replacement is almost impossible. I have called back many times each time told something different. As much as I loved the eco bee I would never buy one again.

We loved it for a day. Thought the app and Alexa feature was great. Worked well for only ONE DAY. We woke up the next morning, spoke to Alexa and she didn't even come on. Tried everything; researched all articles available on the help site. There was no help available on Ecobee site for when it doesn't even respond. It literally does nothing. So frustrating that we have to return and haven't even used it for 24 hours.

Ecobee has built on previous smart thermostat ideas with yet another killer feature: Onboard Alexa. For those that have your thermostat somewhere that is occupied/centralized in your house, this puts answers to questions, automation adjustments (such as temperature changes), and other Alexa functionality centrally in your house. Add this to the other awesome Ecobee4 features that carry over from the Ecobee3 such as room sensors, and you have a very solid product that really does a great job becoming a vital part of your daily routine.
My previous top consideration, the Nest, was cool but had one major downside: If you spent too much time away from the thermostat, it would switch to "Away" and stop conditioning your house. Nest realized this shortcoming and released $100 combo smoke detectors and presence sensors. While I appreciate their thought, $100 per additional sensor is just not realistic for your typical consumer. Along came Ecobee. In the package you get the Thermostat and a second motion+temperature sensor, and can add more sensors than you'd ever need by buying additional packs. They are tiny (less than 2" x 2") and can be put just about anywhere. I have mine on the wall with regular push pins. Ecobee says you should get years of life out of each battery (worlds better than the 4 or 5 months I get from some of my other smart home accessories), and the range is acceptable but not fantastic. Installation was easy. I have an older house (late 70s construction) so I only had 4 wires. The Ecobee requires 5 wires, but comes with an adapter for houses with only 4. Side comparison: the Nest does not require 5 wires, but does recommend it. It can theoretically run off of 4 wires, but simply charges an onboard battery any time the air handler is running. If the battery starts getting low, it will actually run your air handler more than needed to recharge itself! I much prefer Ecobees honest approach to an adapter than Nest’s unnecessary additional runtime. Air handlers use about 500w of electricity simply running the fan! Not very green, Nest! The primary thermostat is easy to use, though to be honest I almost never touch it. The interface is mostly intuitive and easy to navigate. I wish there was a little more customization available for what information shows in idle mode (it changes modes when you approach the thermostat), but right now it displays the current calculated temperature (based on remote sensors that detect motion and the thermostat) as well as the outside weather conditions.
Another enjoyable feature: Home IQ. Having an older home, I’m always curious to know how my home’s efficiency compares to that of houses around me. Ecobee’s Home IQ feature provides you insight into how your house compares to similar houses in your area. In addition, it tallies total daily runtime, presence sensor activity and temperature history, and a few other things. If their built-in analytics aren’t enough, you can download the raw data via .csv. The App works well, and mirrors the interface you are provided on the front of the thermostat. I do not have any Apple products, but the HomeKit/Siri integration is convenient for those in the Apple ecosystem. With how rarely I touch my thermostat, I don’t mind breaking my phone out or walking to the unit. Overall, I think I made the right choice.
Here’s a TL:DR –
Pros:
-Integrated Alexa means convenience for your household
-Saves money quickly over a non-scheduled thermostat
-Keeps your house comfortable even if you don’t frequent the room containing the thermostat
-Provides easy access via an app, web portal, or Siri
-Gives you insight into your energy use and system cycle times via their Home IQ portal
-Warns you of dangerous or unexpected temperatures inside your house
-Active development by Ecobee means constant new features added to the software of the device.
Cons:
-Sensors are still a little expensive (I’d love to see a $20 price point) and can have a limited range
-You may need to do a little additional install work if your home has less than 5 wires running to the thermostat

Risk of Error too high

My 2 year old Lenox furnace required the wiring harness to be cut and altered along with several 'jumper bars" to be permanently altered in order to make the ecobee4 Wi-Fi Thermostat functional. The risk of error was too high so I returned it to BestBuy.
BestBuy accepted the return with no issue, thanks.

Hands down the best Smart Thermostat available

I love the ecobee 4 and the remote sensors. I used a Honeywell Z-Wave thermostat for several years, while it worked as a thermostat it wasn't very smart. I had it integrated with Smartthings, but other than the ability to manually control it from the Smartthings app it wasn't very smart. Our home is 3 stories tall it faces the East so we get sun in the morning on front of the house where our living room is and sun on the back of the house in the evening where the kitchen and bedrooms are. We also have a media room in the basement where we spend most of our time and the media room has always been very cold in the summer while the rest of the house is very warm. I have tried to integrate motion sensors and temperature sensors to identify which rooms are occupied and the temperature of those rooms to try to balance the temp throughout the house. Now I know that without some sort of control for the air registers the temp will never be constant throughout the house but my bigger goal was to identify which rooms where occupied and use that data to control the thermostat. Smartthings does not easily accommodate for this level of control, or at least not without writing custom scripting to handle this. All in all the Honeywell wasn't very smart, in fairness it was never billed as a smart thermostat only that it could be controlled through Z-Wave.
I then tried the Nest 2 gen, I have a heat pump and in the winter the Nest 2 gen didn't consistently put out enough electricity to engage my emergence heat coils. Every time the heating coils were engaged the coils chattered as if they were someone's teeth chattering in the cold. I had to call my HVAC guy to tested the voltage output who told me my American Standard heat pump required 26.6 volts to engage the coils and the Nest was only putting out 24 volts. The thermostat is supposed to output the voltage to engage the heating coil which charges a capacitor which in turn engages the coil, since the output voltage was below what was required by the heat pump the capacitor would charge temporarily and then discharge because there wasn't enough voltage to maintain the charge in the capacitor. So I went back to my Honeywell.
About 2 years after trying the Nest 2, I decided to give the Nest 3 a try. I tried to verify the voltage issue had been resolved before installing the 3rd gen, but couldn't find anything online. Desperate for a smarter thermostat I decided to bit the bullet and give it a shot. It worked alright, however during the time I had it installed I never needed the heating coils for any period of time so I don't know if the output voltage issue had been resolved or not. My issue with the Nest was the cost of remote sensors and after reading some reviews of the sensors and the issues concerning reliability and the fact you can't replace the batteries in them just have to buy new sensors turned me off to them., but the Nest itself was constantly going into Away because it didn't see movement in the Living room where the thermostat is. This became a constant issue, my wife was not happy. I worked on the schedule and fiddled with the energy saving settings and the only way I could get it to work was essentially disable all smart features which kind of defeats the purpose of a smart thermostat. To make matters worse I work from home most of the time and my desk is in the basement, and since I wasn't in the living room the thermostat was constantly going into Away and I was sweating in the basement.
Finally I had had enough, I purchased the ecobee 4 and 2 additional senor packs. I put a sensor in the kitchen, each of the bedrooms and the media room, then I modified the comfort settings and schedule to use only certain sensors for certain modes and bingo my house is finally comfortable. The setup was very simple and sensors pair very easily, the schedule is easy to understand and control. That was another issue I had with Nest the schedule feature was easily the most difficult I could imagine it could be, absolutely the worst. I don't use Alexa much, I have google Homes throughout my house and can't really see the need for both assistants. I love this product, also ecobee is very responsive with support and knowledgeable.

So, wanted this to work so bad. Tried to use it, but didnt have a common wire. So had to switch to the nest. Otherwise, would have cost an arm and a leg to run a common wire. The product looks great, however, expensive to install.

I'm sorry to hear about this! Every ecobee thermostat comes with the PEK (Power Extender Kit) This device is used for people that don't have a C wire and don't want to run a new one. It gets installed at the equipment, and basically acts as a wire adapter, so you don't have to run a new wire. It's pretty easy to install, and comes in every box, if you need it or not:

Ecobee does it again. Now with a built in Amazon Alexa service, not only does it respond to Alexa commands, but is a full fledged Alexa device much like an Echo or Echo dot!! You can even stream music from your thermostat! What a time to be alive. Being able to remotely control the temperature from my bed or from across the world is simply amazing. I love the home kit compatibility. Asking Siri what the temp is or asking her to change it from your iOS or Apple Watch is so easy. What really sets it apart are the sensors that you can place around your house to get a more average temp so if like me, your thermostat is down a hallway, the remote sensors help balance out your house. You won't be disappointed with this thermostat.
