The device itself in small and light weight. Comes with 4 batteries, cleaning wipes, install cd, everything you need to start using it right away... except a charger. Which is why I gave it a 4/5 stars. Everything mechanical has been flawless, connected to the internet right away, can send scanned files to any of my devices; laptop, phones, desk top, tablets.

I needed a way to scan documents. The Epson Workforce DS-40 is small, compact, and has numerous ways it can communicate with your computer or Tablet. I have hooked this up to my PC / Laptop via USB and the process is relatively easy. You install the included software and then press the blue button on the scanner whenever you want to start a new scan. For iPads, you download Epson DocumentScan from the Apple app store (it's free). You then change the Scanner to be a wifi device for your iPad to connect to directly.
If you want more detailed settings, the Epson app on PC provides many different sliders and settings. But I tend to use default settings and scan to PDF with great success.
It's important to keep the scanner clean (they include one soft cleaning kit and one dry cleaning kit). Dust and specs can create lines in your scanned image. But, again, cleaning is pretty simple to do.
If I had a complaint, sometimes I have difficulties getting the document to feed into the scanner and or feed the image straight. That can lead to lopsided scans. It becomes a bigger pain when you have been scanning a series of documents into one file only to realize one of them isn't very straight afterwards. The software is supposed to straighten documents, but its functionality seems to be hit or miss.
Still, the price and the portability make this a solid pick-up.

Overall good scanner, but with some shortcomings

The scanner is good. The usb mode and wifi mode work as advertised. The mobile app is good. Overall a good scanning experience. However I returned it for the brother 920DW for the following experience.
1. The epson runs on AA batteries, while the brother comes with rechargeable lithium ion battery.
2. The desktop app for the epson doesn't crop automatically based on the document.
3. No duplex support for the epson.
4. No SD card support for the epson.
However, the epson is better for the following:
1. It is cheaper when I got it on sale. But I picked the brother refurbished, so it came out to be the same.
2. Mobile scanning experience on the epson is way better. The app is more polished.
3. The wifi experience is also better on the epson.
But I use the scanner mainly on my mac with a usb cable, so I went with the brother.

It is a compact scanner at a reasonable price. I have a combination printer and scanner but it is fairly large and not very portable. I bought the Epson for my wife.

The scanner is easy to use and to set up. The only reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars is because you cannot have multiple papers at one time go through for scanning. You have to feed the papers one at a time which can be time consuming.

This product is affordable, yet comparable in productivity and features of those $400+ scanners. It does one page at a time easier than bulk. It has good software. It can work wirelessly and single click sending to OneDrive, Dropbox, or even to email programs. It can be set up to save in many formats, and high quality.

This little scanner does EXACTLY what I needed it to do. It scans items as small as a receipt, or a full size document - both high quality. I just connect to my laptop and it is good to go!

Purchased for my Wife's business. She carries it back and forth from work at times which is easy due to the size & weight. Very Easy to use once you choose and learn the different ways to scan.

I purchased this scanner after needing to make an insurance claim where I needed to send in hundreds of receipts. Set up was easy and I love the wireless scanning option (WiFi and battery operated) so you could take it with you even in your car or on a trip- if need be. The one bummer was that you have to separately purchase an adapter if you’d like to plug it in and not use up the battery; however I’m not sure how many papers it’ll scan before it dies, but mine is still full. I think this printer is great for people who want to minimize paper clutter around their home.

This scanner almost has it all except, like an earlier version, it doesnt have the multipaper feed. We actually returned this one to get the earlier version and gave up the wireless feature. Too bad there wasn't a version that had both. The ability to do multiple documents was more important to us than wireless. Ither than that, this works really well and we liked the portableness.

Bought it for my mom to use for her recipies. The software is kinda crummy for storing files, so i had to teach her how to copy the files to iBooks.
