Great unit for a vehicle without GPS

I bought this to put in my 2015 Dodge Ram -- I think my truck supports GPS, but I would have to pay, and thought an inexpensive Garmin unit like this would be perfectly adequate, and I was right. I've had Garmin units in the past. It can definitely be better to have a purpose-dedicated GPS in your car, rather than trying to use your phone, with a holder, etc. And especially on road trips, where if you are not in cell or data range, you can't start a new navigation. NOTE: my 4 stars are not really a knock, more like "this is as good as you get for such a cheap price" -- I would buy it again in a heartbeat...
Pros:
* simple to use
* nice clear turn by turn directions
* warns of things like upcoming speed limit changes
* provides map updates for life of the unit (supposedly)
* the suction cup holder has worked well for me
* the 12V lighter plug also worked well
* auto shutoff, when you turn off your car
* nice clear, bright display, easily viewable day and night
* I really like the panel on the right showing upcoming town, cities, rest stops, etc. -- can really make stop planning easier on long road trips
* great navigation graphics, great lane indicators ("get the second from right lane"... etc.)
Cons:
* kind of seems to have a mishmash of databases of things to look up by name, such as Foursquare and others
* you can only display one at a time of: distance to goal, time to goal, clock at goal -- that's super annoying, and a bit cumbersome to switch between them
* feels like you have to menu navigate more than one level than would be necessary
* touch response is not super great or accurate (but it fully works)
* no traffic, but that not a knock on the product, but you miss it compared to using your phone or more expensive products or built in with traffic

On a long drive, we had a problem with an older GPS. Seriously, it was over 10 years old and didn't come with lifetime map updates. The new unit works great and was easy to download the map updates. Brought us back home with no issues at all!

Good value for the price. Accurate speaking directions, clear voice, and other great options for finding locations (gas stations, hotels, restaurants, etc). Been using this device a couple weeks and I am very pleased with the Drive 52 GPS.

This was a replacement for another Garmin my elderly mother had for at least 10 years--it finally stopped working. I'll never get her to use a Waze or Google Maps navigation, and shes very familiar with the Garmin UI, so it was an easy replacement. You can subscribe for a bunch of different features, but the only ine she's interested in was map updates and those are free, so were good to go there.

It does what I want it to do. The price was right. It was a Black Friday item and my Tom Tom cord broke. I needed one immediately ! I had heard Garmins were pretty good.
Frankly, I like My Tom Tom better. When roads split off it was easier to follow the arrow. I don’t like how the arrow stays closer to the bottom of the screen. I like the Tom Toms red arrow not so much this magenta arrow.
All and all. It does what I need, affordably.

Last summer, I used my iPhone as my map, but it was kind of rough on the battery. A friend recommended Garmin, so I took her advice.
It does get me where I need to go, but I find it rather difficult to input the addresses. I found it easier once I started using a stylus instead of my finger. I have many years of using the Google maps app, and that may be affecting my attitude toward it as well.
The suction mount holds it securely to the windshield. It works best if the windshield is clean.

our other GPS's were about 10 years old and finally wore out. We use them for our Real estate business and use them a lot. These new models are a little different but actually have more features. I actually bought two so we can have one in each car. These are better than a cell because you can pre-load as many destinations as you would like and it is very quick to pull them up when you are showing 15-20 homes in a day. Highly recommend. Also, loved the pre-order at Best Buy and quick in and out at the store.

I love this GPS. The graphics are clear, and well defined. I really enjoy the sidebar when getting close to an exit or turn, on the interstate. A picture of the exit, or turn, sign appears, so you know what to look for.
I also enjoy the way certain points are marked on the map. It gives you the name of the restaurant, or gas station, along your route...if it is listed.
My only drawback is that it isn't compatible with traffic alerts, the way the Garmin Nuvi is. I would like to know the traffic situation ahead of me, so I can make detour plans. It would be great if Garmin would put out an update to the software that included a free patch to make this unit compatible with the traffic alert cord
Overall, a great purchase at a great price.
