Customers are saying

Customers commend the DriveAssist 51 LMT-S for its excellent camera, which is frequently praised for accident protection, and its user-friendly GPS navigation system. Many appreciate the ease of use and the helpful voice command features. While some users mention limitations in battery life and memory card functionality, the positive feedback on the core features outweighs these concerns.

    Beyond my expectations

Like most people, I use my phone as my GPS, but I started to wonder what current GPS devices offered. I was an early adopter back in the 2000s, so I’ve seen these devices evolve over time. But what blows me away is the quality of the voice command and the camera system. I definitely would spend extra to buy one of these higher end devices, as it does more than give directions. It is virtually hands free, where I simply declare “Voice Command” and it turns on. The degree of accuracy has been inconsistent, but I figure it will learn over time. Surprisingly, it worked well in Hawaii, where every other letter is a vowel. As you arrive at a location, it gives a live view and points out the location for you. The interaction with your Smartphone still needs some work, but it is ultimately effective, although a little tedious because you have to turn on your app and have it connect with your GPS device. I wish the device was easier to connect and disconnect, like the magnetic connection on the DriveLuxe model. But ultimately, I went with the DriveAssist version for the camera. But I preferred the DriveLuxe ease of disconnection. The cord is somewhat awkward as well, as it is an old USB mini connector instead of micro. The unit does not hold a long charge, so you need to keep it plugged in more often than you’d want. I would buy it again, but wish I could try the DriveLuxe. The camera isn’t as important as I thought because it takes some work to turn it on.

I needed something that I could use for directions when the GPS on phone wasn't working. I do damage assessments in areas hit by disasters and sometimes don't get good (or any) internet. The Garmin helps out in those times. I like that I can build a route and not have to go one by one as on phone. Only issue is the duration of battery. But, as long as I've got a car I can keep it charged.

I really like this Garmin I purchased. The screen is perfect size and is easy to read. What I don't like is the battery does not hold charge very long - maybe 1 hour or so. Also, we had purchased a Garmin 4 years ago, and we could use the same wall charger, since this one we just purchased did not come with one.

As an owner of 6 products over 10 years, I've seen the changes to Garmin products. I still use the GarminMap 78SC on my boat, however, the battery on my Nuvi 50LM started going bad after 5 years. I decided to try the higher end DriveAssist 51. The touch screen Is very responsive. The only down sides are the pronunciations on Hawaiian streets are terrible and apparently the Garmin Garage is no longer available (I prefer the Yoda Voice instead of the mispronounced Hawaiian Names),

I was tired of my GPS on my phone draining my battery and didn't have a way to mount it. Plus I need a dash cam to protect me for work. This had both. I have been using it for months now and I am very happy with it. Its accuracy is not as good a Google maps but it gets me close

    Great but also annoying

Having a GPS is great but having a GPS that comes with an extremely short cable and an inadequate battery life is annoying. Had to buy a new cord that would reach the window. Some default settings are annoying but are easily changed. Overall this is a good GPS once settings and cable are changed.
