Customers are saying

Customers commend the DriveAssist 51 LMT-S for its excellent camera, which is frequently praised for accident protection, and its user-friendly GPS navigation system. Many appreciate the ease of use and the helpful voice command features. While some users mention limitations in battery life and memory card functionality, the positive feedback on the core features outweighs these concerns.

I will give the most honest review I can . I own several Garmin and TomTom GPS receivers and this is as accurate as I can make it . Voice recognition on this GPS is painfully bad. The simplest requests would return the most bizarre reply . It was pure torture listening to the reply it would come up with . The second thing was it's final reminder for an exit for instance would come too late. I own several Garmin GPS receivers and they all have this problem . Within a few hours I missed several exit ramps . My TomTom that I also have several never ever caused me to miss a ramp or exit . If Garmin could combine the best features of each product it would be a good GPS . I was hoping they got it right this time , but like my other Garmin receivers , they all have this weakness.I'm sorry to say I cannot recommend it . Perhaps if you never own another GPS you wouldn't know the difference . It has features like built in dash cam that I like . But the optional rear view camera is half the price of the GPS. The only good thing I can say is it combines a dash cam and a GPS in one unit . However I was so turned off by the poor GPS operation I had to return it . I never even had time to evaluate the camera .

I was looking forward to having a gps with a camera. Downloading video was easy with good quality. When it works it is great. However, this GPS freezes up every 20 minutes during travel. Don't buy

Worked great for about 3 weeks. Then just stopped workin completely. GPS and dash cam picture quality were excellent. Settings were a bit excessive, but I get it. It is nice to set it up specific to your needs.

This unit does not like microSD cards, which defeats the purpose of having it record anything. When the unit writes to the SD card, it locks up and your unit is useless. You can do a complete format of the SD card with your computer, but it is still corrupted and only temporarily works until the unit continually locks up. Garmin knows there is an issue with this unit and has attempted several patches that do not or have not worked. I paid $370+tax for this unit 2.5 years ago and hope they discontinued them or have fixed them.

Used unit for a road trip. The maps only shows the main roads no side streets. My Google maps on my phone did a better job. For the amount of money spent it's not worth buying.

The lack of map detail that you’re experiencing may be resolved by adjusting the Map Detail settings to More on the GPS. Here is a Garmin Support Center article that will help: http://bit.ly/2uPyDQA Thanks, James Garmin

I wanted to like this GPS but it didn’t work out. The highs - nice screen and clear voice commands. The lows - incomplete package (car mount missing?!), GPS could not locate well known locations (both Waze and Apple Maps could find them), video recording inoperable and spontaneous shutdown of the unit (when connected to power).

'tis surprising that Best Buy would sell the Garmin DriveAssist 51 LMT-S. One can usually depend on quality products from Best Buy. The downloaded apps do not appear on my phone. The screen displays only the Garmin logo. The screen does not display any functional features.

I purchased this GPS for use in Canada as I did no want to use my phones map and incur data charges. A map in an android phone is far superior to this GPS. I ended up just using my cell phone. Also in addition to function, the graphics are so outdated as well and very pixel like.

Too many alerts and you can only turn off half of them. You're not supposed to put info in while driving but things keep popping up on the screen for you to read. If you buy this you will soon find yourself screaming at it to shut the h*** up.

While the GPS is ready to use out of the box, we would suggest checking for any map and software updates that may have been made available while the device was in transit and on the retailer’s shelf. This model includes Built-in Wi-Fi® for easy map and software updates. Painful, Awful Product

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have been a faithful Garmin user for more than a decade, and this unit has caused me nothing but pain and frustration. 1. Voice Recognition - I work for a radio station and enunciate for a living. It gets it right about 5% of the time. It is awful. And if it weren't so frustrating the "guesses" it gives for locations is absurd. 2. Camera - The camera downloads movies through the Virb app. The controls are not intuitive. And you have to use the Garmin Virb app to view videos. It has great difficulty commuicating with the GPS unit, and like everything else with this unit, it takes several steps and tight choreography to get it to work. I was cut off in traffic yesterday and I have been trying for three hours to find the spot in the video but it just does not work. It only lets me download two minutes at a time, and the slider bar that one would normally use to locate video does not work. It keeps snapping back to the starting point. 3. Traffic. Unlike past models, you have to pair this with your phone EVERY TIME you get in the car. Yet another "add one more step to make it difficult to use," concept. And it often has trouble pairing. 4. The problems with this very expensive machine go on and on. If it did what it promised, it would be an excellent machine. But I get the feeling it was slapped together by people who never have and never will use this in traffic. This is probably my seventh Garmin GPS unit and is the only one I wish I could just throw away, but I have invested too much money in it. Instead, it sits attached to my windshield reminding me of broken promises and the money I wasted on it. Oh, and it eats up memory cards - and does not read them well. My unit and the VIRB app continue to remind me I have no card in the slot. It is brand new and I have used it about a month. After about three or five reboots it magically reads the card and realizes there are saved images on it.

A downgrade in screen, mount, traffic

Waited two years to upgrade to GPS with integrated camera. If I was not passed the return date, I would return this unit. I have spent $100 trying to work around the following issues. The screen is so reflective all I see is my knuckles and the steering wheel even on the brightest screen setting if facing towards the sun OR bright light coming in the side windows, no matter where I put the unit. None of the high-contrast map display options even come close to the Garmin I replaced, they are all muted and poorly back lit. The camera is placed directly in the center mount line of sight so on my third purchase to get it mounted to avoid blocking the camera which only has horizontal adjustments (no vertical) so your dash positions are severely limited especially in a pickup. The power cord assumes you will dismount the whole unit using the suction lever, instead of a positive base seat and top snap in clip like my previous Garmin, the clip provided has no positive position snap to mount or dismount, there's this un-intuitive squeeze or press or whatever I have still not figured out, that requires remounting the unit, getting the cord out of the way, then re-calibrating the camera forward position. And NO, a new traffic sensing power cable won't fix the mount design issues unless you just capitulate to these really disappointing design deficiencies. And yes, I am a high usage Garmin fan, but not for this unit. The only reason I know I finally got an integrated camera is because the unit asks me to re-center the camera every time I mount the unit. Yea, right. The engineering design assumptions obviously did not take place behind the wheel of a vehicle, particularly a F150 or similar type dash and windshield.
