Customers appreciate the Opal 2.0's excellent ice quality and overall performance, frequently praising its ease of use and attractive design. However, some users find the machine noisy and require regular maintenance, including filter replacements and descaling. The water tank capacity and the need for frequent sanitization are also points of concern for some customers. While the compact size is a plus for many, others find the weight to be a significant drawback.

This will be my second GE Opal ice maker. Loved the first one. But this one is hands down so much better. Upgrades include a metal scoop, magnetic holder fir the scoop, water filter, a filter for the cooling fan, and an illuminated reminder to sanitize the unit every 25 hours of run time. Keeps you honest on maintenance. Setup is easy. Seems like ice making has speeded up. Lesson learned from my old unit, USE DISTILLED WATER! I absolutely love this updated unit. The Wifi setup is even easier to do now. Well done GE.

I have had this ice maker a little over 4 months, in the time I have had it, it repeatedly will say “Add Water” even though it is full. Every time I “clean” (sanitize) the ice maker this becomes an issue. It will also not pull water from the side tank after “cleaning”, like it doesn’t register that it is there. I have “primed the pump” every time and usually resort to having to turn it off for a day & then turn it back on, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. If I could return this and get my $$ back, I would at this point. Yes it makes awesome nugget ice when it works, but this issue is extremely aggravating and should not be happening to a +$500 machine after only having it for 4 months. I wish I had just stuck with the $100 nugget maker that you have to fill up more often.

I love my new ice maker. It makes ice super quick and keeps it cold, unlike the others I’ve had. It might be on the pricier side but I think it’s worth it. No problems so far. And you can control it with your phone if you need to.

I think this is the fourth opel ice maker I’ve had in the past three years. If it wasn’t for Best Buy’s protection plan, I’d buy something else. The last two squealed terribly bad. And now this one needs to be sanitized every five days; which seems ridiculous. I spend more time sanitizing the ice make than i do using it. I think it’s time for me to move on from this very expensive ice maker and find something of higher quality. Very disappointed in the product, extremely satisfied with Best Buy’s service.
We're sorry to hear that you've not had the best experience with your Opal Ice Maker. Descaling and sanitizing will be dependent on the hardness of your water in your area. It is recommended that these be done once a week. This is considered normal. We'll share your feedback with our team for future consideration. -Kacie@GEAppliances

Love the opal ice machine. I had one of the originals and when it stopped making ice regularly I purchased another one. I use this machine all day and it does great at keeping up with my ice addiction.

Im very happy that i bought this Nugget Ice Machine. It makes the small nuggets like Sonic has. Its very easy to use. This is the best one that i have ever bought. I highly recommend this one. I use it everyday and the ice stays in it. You never have to empty. Just fill up the water tank.

So far so good, I recently upgraded from the last model to this latest model opal ice maker…but one thing I can say it seems louder that the last one… but I will edit my review if anything changes

We wanted to love this ice maker but the amount of time it takes to sanitize, descale and maintain the unit to keep it working makes me hate it. They expect you to take it apart, fill it with vinegar, let it soak for 18 hours every single month. Not to mention the sanitizing using bleach. And to add to it, we’ve had it 4 months and it stopped working. It says “add water” even though it’s full. I’ve tried every troubleshooting article and video I can find and nothing fixed the problem.
Thank you for sharing your experience and concerns regarding the recommended descaling and sanitizing procedures needed to properly care for your Opal. The scale inhibiting filter will filter 40 gallons of water before needing to be replaced. Replacement will be approximately every 3 months, though it will depend on your usage. If the reservoir is full and you receive the "add water" message, that may be an indication that the filter needs to be replaced. If this doesn't resolve the issue you're having, we encourage you to send us (GE Appliances) a private message on one of our social channels (Facebook, Instagram) with your contact information, model and serial numbers and a copy of your review so we can research your situation. -Vikki@GEAppliances

Great addition, cleaning is a pain

besides the constant cleaning and the software issue with the descale light on all the time, it works. I still clean it every few weeks with citric acid. I wish I could figure out why the descale light stays on even though I followed instructions to the T.
If you have already ran a full descale on your unit and the light is still on or flashing. A flashing cleaning light can indicate that the filter on your model needs to be replaced. Once you replace the filter and turn on the machine, the indicator will stop blinking. More information about the filter can be found in the manual on the website on page 10. If replacing the filter does not resolve the issue, please call our Opal support team directly at 866-907-6718.

I have had my ice maker for almost a year now and love it so much! It is so easy to clean and ensure there isn’t anything growing!! I set a timer for my daily use so I never have to remember to turn it on or off, it’s ready for and iced coffee as soon as I wake up. Couldn’t be happier with it!

Good product. Works as described. You do need to sanitize it about every other week. Which is kind of a pain. Otherwise works great!
I would recommend this to a friend

My advice...Do not buy. This item is very heavy and difficult to move close to a sink for cleaning. It is also noisy and generates a lot of heat. Do yourself a favor and purchsae a good cooler like an RTIC Ultra light 52 or a YETI Rambler 45. Go to Sonic once a week and buy 3-4 bags of ice. Less hassle, less cleanup and you don't have to worry about it breaking down. A cooler doesn't break down and can be used for other things like camping, sports events, family gatherings or for fishing (surf or by boat).1

So far after about a month, this thing is awesome. Makes ice quickly, and isn't louder than typical ice makers in a fridge. The refill tank makes it easy to refill and know when the water is getting used up, which is a huge plus! If you want the best pellet ice, this is the machine.
We're pleased to hear how much you love your ice maker! The side tank is a great addition that helps reduce how many times you have to refill the ice machine. Thanks for allowing GE Profile to be part of your home. -Don@GEAppliances
