Gears of War is a third person shooter, based in an alternate reality world where, basically, you kill aliens. The story line itself is probably the best I've ever seen, maybe even better than Halo. Add that to the amazing and inovative gameplay and you have an incredible story mode. I thoroughly enjoyed playing every second of the campaign. The characters always provide entertainment in the form of comedy or just being cool. But once again, this all ties into the gameplay. Unlike other games, Gears emphasizes taking cover over charging your enemies. This is great in story mode, because you soon learn how to use it to great affect, which allows you the satisfaction of out-thinking you're opponents (which are pretty smart) in order to win each battle. However, I didnt like this kind of strategy in competitive play on Live. Ironically, it seems that the best way to win on Xbox Live is too abandon all of the strategies taught in the story mode and just charge at your opponents with a shotgun. This is my major problem with Gears. It often seems that games are decided by two guys running around in circles shooting each other with the shotgun (that you spawn with). It turns out that every strategy like taking cover, gaining high ground, and using an assault rifle for medium range attacks, are completely useless. Every game is a race for the sniper rifle and a shotgun duel. Also, the game isnt competitive because hit detection and damage are calculated randomly, making it possible to get a head-shot with a shotgun from across the map. To sum it up, amazing story line, horrible Xbox Live play.

It is hard to find a game that is truely original. Well Gears of War is about as original as you can get with the world in chaos it is up to you and your team to kill the locust infestation. This game is awesome the single player has such a good storyline and the graphics and characters are so different from anything you may have seen. Game play is relatively easy and you can look at something that pops up and see where you have to go opposed to aimlessly wandering like in most games. On top of it all this game has amazing online play and game modes. I love this game if it wasn't for call of duty 4 this game would be the most popular game out there. with out a doubt buy thius game even if you want the new one its just that good.

The Real Deal

For those that have commented that they don’t understand the “hype” surrounding this game (and there are only a few), I simply don’t understand where they are coming from. My first, uninformed guess would be that they don’t have an HD TV (so they don’t get the benefit of the best out there graphics), or they just don’t like shooter games. I do, however, appreciate the self-proclaimed “non-hardcore gamer who found it difficult. It’s a game for the hardcore- no doubt). Their entitled to their opinions but don’t let them stop you from buying this game. I passed it up for months for other shooter games mostly because I heard GOW was too short (I wanted my monies worth). I would agree that it’s too short but only because it’s so good it leaves you wanting more. Seriously folks, the “hype”, as it might be referred to in a negative way, is no hype at all. GOW delivers in every single area of excellence with few minor flaws (and those really being personal preference issues for me). There is no way to really describe in short the unique style of using cover so I won’t try here, just believe all the other reviews that say it’s awesome and fun, easy to learn and execute (and it really is unique). There currently is no rival (that I have seen) to the graphics in GOW (though Halo 3 comes close). Sound is as good as it gets (limited only by your setup- BOOM… GROUND-WALKER… HUMANSSS). The weapons available are awesome. The game is not short in my opinion, but again, does leave you wanting more. The replay value is very high if for no other reason than to go through the game trying to find the 30 hidden cogs. Don’t cheat and read walkthroughs to find them, that takes the fun out of it. I have only played through once and found only 6 cogs. Of course, I wasn’t even looking for them- so I can’t wait to play through again and search them out while keeping my head down. As for the minor flaws I spoke of, they are as follows; and remember that I said they are really more based on my own personal style of play and preference and not flaws in the design or play of the game with the exception of the chainsaw. So many write about loving the chainsaw (for melee on one of the guns) so I won’t bash it. I will say that I don’t like it, it’s too slow and unreliable when your rushed by several enemy (maybe I don’t know how to use it well enough). I also don’t personally like how some of the play is arcade-like. For example, the Berserkers. Having to lure them into the light in order to blast them with the Hammer of Dawn is really not fun at all. It completely takes me out of the game and into the arcade mode (like it’s a little mini-game inserted there to get you to remember to eat or something). If I were the developer of the sequel, I would take them out or make it so the “shooter-gamer” can shoot and kill them. There is also the mine carts that take you on a little journey through the mine like a slow moving roller coaster in a carnival while you shoot at pop-ups and finally the generator room where you have to walk from one side of the room to the other without falling through the floor. These arcade-play parts should have never made it into a game like this; their a different genre and effectively disengage ME from the game. Their boring, frustrating, and most of all, take you completely out of the war for untold minutes until you figure out which board not to walk on (for example). Finally, what I see as flaws are personal style of play issues so they do not effect my fair rating of the game. It is an easy five only because I can’t give it six stars. 5, 5, 5, 5, 5 without a doubt. Oh yea, I haven’t even gone Live yet. While I didn’t get what I was expecting and hoping for from Halo 3, GOW made up for it.

Game Overall"
I bought this game a year after it was released and I have to say, it lives up to the hype quite well. I was stunned by the absolute beauty and smoothness of the full 1080p graphics that gears of war can support. There was little to no lag in framerate even when the screen was full of dozens of enemies. The duck and cover play style works very well and is extremly fun once you master it. There are a huge number of different weapon styles and weapon mechanics, such as burst shooting, blind firing and Melee combat. This game plays like a movie and your both the actors and director.
"Single Player"
This is an amazing game that no Xbox fan should be without. Im sure there will be a sequel as the single player was very short and could be easy completed in about 10 hours. If you have a 360 and a HDTV, do your self a favor and pick this up ASAP, I gaurantee you will not be disappointed. The co-op on the harder difficulties is where the fun lies though. I suggest you play it alone through casual to get the hang of the game and then again with a buddy on hardcore or insane. The story is very engaging and exciting. Every moment is tense and the air is filled with the sense of danger. The sound sets the mood and atomosphre like a hollywood blockbuster, the sound changes and adapts to the intense combat, or horrifying new monsters running at you to rip you to shreds.
"Xbox Live"
The multiplayer is fun and exciting. The matches are adrenaline filled and fast paced, you have to move in and out of cover, this isnt the standard run and gun, its all about cover. Stick with your allies, cover each others back, and anhilate your enemy. There are several types of gameplay match and my favorite is Annex, which is a capture points and fend of enemies to win, its fun to see how well people work together to capture objectives, and sometimes things go horrible wrong, like your ally miss tosses his grenade it bounces back and wipes out two of your allies. Sigh, good times.
"Closing comments"
This game is a face paced, adrenaline junkies dream. If you havent tried it and own a 360, get it NOW, Big guns, Bigger enemies, Blood and gore to the extreme, Chainsaws!!! You cant go wrong.

This game has a solid storyline, that draws in the player. Online play is also fantastic, giving a variety of game types and maps to play. The controls are easily picked up and copy most other shooters, making new players, pros in no time. Its great gameplay does not mean that it lacks in graphics either. I really enjoy the game visual appearence and rendering of both setting and characters. I would recomend this game to anyone who enjoys a game full of action and in depth play.

Completely different from any other shooter

The story mode crafts very realistic characters, down to the way their facial expressions and voice changes. They look and sound like real military men and their personalities range from funny to serious to sarcastic and arrogant. While easy on casual setting the game gets much tougher on the insane difficulty.
.
The multiplayer is the best part of Gears of War and what makes it so good. I've always wanted to be able to roll to the side instead of leisurely walk when someone surprises me and starts shooting at me. Now I can! The graphics are amazing - it is like watching a movie in real time. The weapons have a lot of parity. The lancer can defeat a shotgun and vice versa. A pistol can defeat either one and vice versa. A sniper rifle has more range than a torque bow and a faster reload time but the torque bow can be less accurate and kill since it uses exploding arrows. The boomshot is powerful but can only hold two shots and its rocket travels very slowly. This makes it about skill with the weapons instead of who grabbed the power weapon.
.
Bottom Line: Get it if you like serious shooters but stay away if you don't intend on sticking with it while you lose horribly for the first few weeks. It does have a learning curve.

A Must-Have For Any 360 Owners

If you own a Xbox 360, this game is a must-have. Usually for First Person Shooters, PC is the way to go with a mouse and keyboard, but the makers of Gears of War made the game very easy to control even for a regular game controller. You can point, aim, shoot, run, duck and cover, roll, strafe, and jump around obstacles all with ease.
Normally, with First Person Shooters, especially when there is a lag in frames, I tend to get dizzy and woozy. But the graphics for this game is simply amazing, and I adjusted to it real fast.
I always think video games are better when you can play with others, and this game is awesome for that. The campaign itself is very cool, but battling through the game with a buddy makes it way more fun. There is a feature in the game, where you can even play as teams versus other people online. Either way, you can't lose with this game.
The only bad part about the game, is that after you complete the game, it seems a bit short. There should be one or two, possibly, even three more stages.
Overall, this game is definitely bound to be a classic.

The main tip when playing this game is: "Look for cover!" immediately. You can't just march in a firefight and fire away. You will perish within moments if you don't look for cover immediately. A lot of "Time Crisis" type of battle since you always need to duck and cover. The storyline was well written and the action is nonstop. This game is good to give you at least 10-20hrs of devoted time just to pass. It's really difficult (even at Casual difficulty) to fight off brutes while attempting to finish tasks here and there to win the "war" in this game. There is a lot of eye candy and it is apparent that the programmers/developers of this game has spent a lot of attention on detail in regards to gameplay and game environment. Even for a game that was released last year, it's still one of my top favorites. This game has all the violence, gore, strategy, eye candy that seems to be lacking in Halo 3 (I'm not a big fan of Halo 3, very overrated game IMO). Gears of War is definitely one of the best games ever released for the Xbox 360. Definitely a keeper!

This game has a very compelling, albeit, mature single player story, with coop on and off line. Great for multiplayer, as well, if you're skilled enough. Of course, the maturity level for players online varies, so it can be annoying at times. However, graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay is tight and takes little time to get good at.

What can say about this game but AMAZING! I started it on Casual and learned the guns and moves I am playing on Hardcore by myself and am mastering the controls. After that I am going for Insane. You might think playing the game 3 times in a row gets boring but its FAR from it with this game. The first time is not enough and the the second time really gets you into the game, by the time you play it for the third time you are getting and even harder challenge. After that play online….
The graphics are very realistic without crossing the line and the storyline is great; you can feel team work and it really draws you in the story and the characters.

This game is fantastic. The whole game play is next generation. The cover system is phenomenal, you can move from cover to cover unlike most games were you have to get out of cover run to the next spot then take cover again. graphics are amazing, the only complaint is that peoles ear's don't look good, but besides that graphcs are supurb. If you are looking for a good game on Xbox live this is the perfect one. nothing to complain about on live. They say this is a horor game but it is only that if you play it in away that will make it bad, sure it can be scary, but it isn't a horor game. this game will fit any gamers needs it is fun, challenging and exciting at every turn. Buy it and i'll see you on Xbox Live.

gears of war is a definite buy. The story game play is unique and makes the game well worth it. It combines the fun of a first person shooter with real life tactics. By allowing your character to hide and take cover behind objects Gears provides some realism to a genre. It contains lots of shooting, intelligent enemies, great assortment of weapons, and amazing graphics. The only downfalls I found were in the shortened story game play. The game seems to be over very quick. Also, the multi player online is one of the worst I have seen. Unless it has changed, you only get one life per match. Unlike Halo where you can respawn, Gears only allows for on death. Once all players on that team have died, the match is over. In my opinion, it is not worth playing online. Overall, a great game worth buying simply for it's replay value.

Gears of War is the must have game for the 360. The game playis revolutionary, with a gritty yet amazing graphics, and a a cover system that works seemlessly with thegame's ai. There is a two player campaign, which runs through the same levels as the first player campaign . The real high life of this game however is the online multiplayer. I have spent 6 months with an average of about 3 hours a day on that aspect of the game, and stil find it enjoying. The achievements are challenging, giving you something to work towards. The only downside is that a maximum of two people can play on one console.

I got this game a month after it came out knowing nothing about this game at all. This is Def a next Gen game and one of only a few that have come out latley that can truly be called that. I love the Camp. all tho a bit short and not enoguht so called bosses to fight. The co op part is great too realy helps to ahve a freind get you threw the hard stuff. The cover system is great I love be able to take cover and blind fire over sand bags and other objects int he game. Let's now talk about the MULT game play. It is fun and the maps are great just wish that they would add more and work out some more of the kinks in the online play. Seems that they kind of put this game ont he back burner for now and are focused ont he PC version. Some of the problems that we all have had are sticking to things and firing on some one point blank only to have them then turn around and one shot you with there shotgun. They have cleaned up most of the little glitche sint he game but there is always people out there that find a new way to do them cause the have to cheat to win. That kinda of wears thing on most like me. This is a great game if you like a cation packed shooting game this one is for you. No disapointments here I can;t wiat for the second one to come out.

I purchased Gears Of War the first day it came out and I haven't put the game down since. First of all the graphics are hands down the best I've seen. I don't have an HD tv but, easily the graphics blow any other game away. Multiplayer and co-op is where the fun takes place. The game is challenging enough but when you have a friend via Xbox Live it enhances the game that much more. This hands down is the best game to purchase on the 360.

Wow is all that can be said about this game. The single player campaign is amazing, although a little short. I was very impressed wihthe graphics and the visuals. What is really impressive is the online play. I have gotten many hours out of playing matches online. There is a good variety of match types, and with the new maps that were just added (and made free), as well as the added achievements, this is a game worth buying.

This is the best game out on the 360. The graphics are still the best on the 360 even though its not even the newest game. The campaign mode is crazy fun, especially when you do co-op with a friend. The xbox-live is awesome and there are updates making that part of the game even better! if you are over the age of 11, and have an xbox and you dont have of gears of war you are simply out of society and need to buy GOW ASAP

This is one of the best third person shooters I have played in a while. The cover system feels like your playing paintball as you hide behind any object in the area to avoid getting shot. It also comes with an epic story line as you follow Marcus Fenix and Delta squad to destroy the Locust Horde who are taking over. Can you save the world and defeat the Locust Horde...
