The Nest Wired is a pretty good video doorbell. Video quality is average though. The installation was not difficult. The app is easy to use and must be downloaded to access the camera and video. The app automatically stores any motion detected video for you to review. However the free version of the app only retains video clips withing last 3 hours. Not 3 hours of clips. Clips from the last 3 hours ONLY. The subscription seems like a good deal though and that will retain weeks of clips. It's easy to download a video clip if you need to. Basically one tap. The real drawback though is that there appears to be NO time and date stamp on the saved video when you download it. It appeared to have the meta data for the video only. As in when you download the video that is the creation time and date. Not the actually time and date that the RECORDING was captured. That's not very useful if you had to use a video clip as a piece of evidence. We did install the chime protector. That was pretty easy. There was one phantom ring since we installed the doorbell. Overall it's a good doorbell and one of the only ones that I am aware of that will connect to a WIFI network with WPA3.

A Smart Way to Secure Your Door

I previously used a video doorbell with my old traditional security service, but after years of not being satisfied with that service I was looking for something new to replace that device. There are a few different brands that I considered, but as someone who already uses quite a bit of Google products this was an easy first choice. Especially, given that Google had just released their new generation of doorbells it was very fortuitous.
The entire setup process was easy, I ran across a few issues but overall, the experience was positive. The video that launces in the Google Home app once you choose to add a doorbell walks you step by step through the setup. One piece of advice I could give is that you should check your doorbell transformer to verify it is compatible. I made the mistake of assuming that since I already had a video doorbell from another company installed that it would be ok, it was not. After installing everything, I realized I did not have enough power and ended up needing to upgrade my doorbell transformer. The chime puck was simple to install and since I already had a different video doorbell camera, I was replacing the installation of the Google Nest Wired Doorbell (2nd Gen.) was also very easy to install. Once everything was in place, and the doorbell transformer had been replaced I was able to complete the setup process in the app and start tweaking the features.
The image quality is great, I notice lots of details even in night mode. I love that I can easily see what is left at the door when packages are dropped off. One thing I thought was a little disappointing was the horizontal viewing angle was a little narrow. I get a great view of the first 10 feet in front of my door, but I can’t see anyone walking up from the street. This is with me utilizing the included wedge to make sure to angle my doorbell. Not a huge deal breaker for me as I was more concerned with making sure I could see when deliveries were made, and people were waiting at my door. I love that it can recognize people, packages, and pets. My old video doorbell would notify for the slightest motion which got annoying quick, and we ended up turning off most of the notifications for it. The camera also allows you to setup activity zones if you want to tweak the notifications even more. You get a bunch of other features like visitor announcements, quick responses, and this is going to be silly but one of my families favorite already are the seasonal doorbell chimes. We love the Halloween chime. These are completely optional, and you need to toggle them on, but if you are feeling festive then they are another nice way to celebrate the holidays.
I feel like the free tier of Nest Aware might be enough for most, but I think that my family will end up going with one of the paid tiers. We have multiple Google devices in the house, another Nest Camera, and Nest Displays so I think the Familiar Face Detection, and continuous recording will be nice features added to what we would get with our indoor camera as well. Again, most I think would be happy with the free tier. Google offers a tremendous number of features, and you still get 3-hour event history.
I am very happy about this new addition to our smart home setup, and I just wish I had made the change from the traditional home security setup sooner. Setup was a breeze, make sure you check that doorbell transformer. The image quality is great, the features are awesome, even the free tier offers so much, and again you get those seasonal chimes, lol. This is an easy recommendation for anyone looking to add a great key part of their smart home setup. Love it.

Great Hardware, Software Needs Help

I wanted this to impress me. I expected it to impress me. I wasn’t. I’ve been a long time Nest owner. I’ve owned at least a dozen Nest products, as well as several other brands of smart home products. Nest has always been my favorite despite some historic shortcomings. The 2nd generation wired doorbell might be the biggest miss for me. Although, I can’t help but think that I’m being tainted by my own history. First time owners may be happy, but I’m struggling.
The hardware looks slick. Slightly larger than the original with a simple modern design. Installation would have been easy, but I ran into a voltage issue. I upgraded the doorbell transformer to 16 volts for about $30. With both steps, the total time was probably 2 hours. The security screw is a nice touch too. Also, to whomever made sure that the mounting holes were the exact same as the first generation, I love you.
The camera quality is decent at 960P. This time around, the doorbell can record up to an hour of footage locally in the case of an internet outage or general instability and upload when back online. This is the one feature I’m happy to see!
I don’t know if I’m alone, but this unit doesn’t mount flush. Maybe I’m missing something, or the instructions were just a little too vague, but the gap between the wedge and the wall is just too much. I ended up putting some thin weather stripping around the mounting place to prevent my neurosis from driving me crazy. I also wrapped the cable clips with electrical tape to prevent water damage.
The Google Home app is a mess. I know it’s being re-worked but I just can’t get over it as we sit around waiting for the transition. It’s slow, clunky and feels outdated. I miss the old Nest app – which is probably going to be declared end of life soon (speculation) – I’m struggling here with “the good ole days”. You won’t be able to use the old app, so settle in for a bumpy ride if that was your app of choice. I miss continuous recording, fast notifications, and a well-designed app.
I gave this a 4 star rating, but only because I feel like I’m more hung up on what feels like a downgrade from the first generation. If you're coming from the first generation, it might feel more like a 3 star product. If I’m being objective, it’s a 4 star product. I may completely change my tune when the new Home app comes out, but until then, I just don’t know what to think.

Hi there zero325, thanks for trying out the new Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen). We appreciate the detailed review that you shared with us, and we're glad to hear that you liked the modern design, offline recording capability and the legacy support for the mounting holes. However, we're sorry to hear about the installation hiccups you encountered, and your disappointment with the Google Home app.
We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place where you can control all your favorite Nest devices and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. Here are some benefits you can get by using the Google Home app with your Nest Cam (Indoor, Wired): - Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup. - Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest Cam and a Nest Hub, just say, ""Hey Google, show me the backyard camera” to cast your camera stream to your display without any additional setup. - One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps. - Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.
We value your feedback and we'll make sure to take the information that you provided us into consideration. We'll also make sure to pass this along to the right team since we're always searching for ways to improve our products and services. As for the issue you are having with the gap between the wedge and the wall, we'd like to assist you further and see how we can help you best. Amazing Doorbell

My previous video doorbell wasn’t cutting it any more, when I tried to connect it always failed, even when I adjusted the resolution down to 480 it wouldn’t connect. So, it was just basically a dumb doorbell. The resolution of the Nest is a native 960 but is better than the 1080 I previously had on my old doorbell, the difference is the Pixel count. And a vertical view that you can see a person from head to toe.
With the nest it was like day and night, The wired install took literally 15 minutes. They give you a puck to install on the transformer of your chime inside. (Make sure your unit is compatible, see website) after installing the puck, I uninstalled the old doorbell and used the same holes to install the Nest. Everything you need is in the box. If you have an uneven surface, they give you two spacers to even it out. They also include a Twenty percent wedge to re position the camera. Which I did because my porch has a fence on the patio. So, guests have to walk down the patio and turn to the right to get to my door. When I repositioned it, I can get a shot of the walking up to the nest as oppose to not seeing them until they are in front of the door. I watched the install video first then added the Nest to my Google home app. The app walks you through the install, step by step. This is a major plus as I hate to stop to read directions. It is so much easier to view this on your phone during the install. After the install, and the unit connected to my home app, the camera connected almost immediately. I love this as my old one (when it did work) would take almost a full minute. The video was crisp and clear. You are able to see full body shots as well as the ability to zoom in to live shots and history. The Nest stores 3 hours of video and loops back if you set it to record constant, or you can record events and it will store them until the internal memory is full then record over older events. Should you need more, you can subscribe to Nest aware. This will save 30 days of events and open up face detection for repeat guests. Your smart speaker will announce their arrival by name. It will even call emergency services from the app. The other option is Nest aware plus which include the previously mention plus record saving events up to 60 days with 10 days constant record time. If you lose Wi-Fi signal the unit will record up to 3 hours then upload to your nest aware or nest aware plus account. If you have neither it will just record locally so you can review later, should you choose.
The infrared camera is nice and clear. To test, I turned off all lights and walked up to the camera. I was able to see all my face features from several feet away. I then turned the lights back on and the view didn’t turn off the infrared immediately. I had to exit the app and come back in and then was able to view it in color. I’m sure a software change can remedy this.
The Nest has built in intelligent notifications. The Nest will notify you of people, Packages, Animals, vehicles. You can also change the outside ring tone to multiple different chimes. They also have a seasonal holiday choice that has a set day that it will return to your default ring. (Holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays etc.) The nest by default will send a notification to your google smart speaker in the house, when someone is at your door and make an announcement.
If you can’t get to your door, click the app and tap on a quick response that will broadcast from the Nest, such as “Just a sec”, or if a package is being dropped off, “You can just leave it”.
For certain events you can set up an activity zone, whereby anything that happens will be saved so you can view it or be notified.
The Nest doorbell is an all in one plus video doorbell. I highly recommend this to family and friends. The nest has many included options that others charge for.

Great doorbell cam and super easy to install!

Great new generation of cam by Google/Nest. I'm really loving it. They include everything you need to install it in the box, you just have to make sure you have a wired doorbell, the transformer to it is up to the task (must be 16 to 24 v, and with good enough power) and you have a mechanical chime (if not, you can get their digital one that is optional and you have to buy).
I did have everything required (a few years ago I did have to upgrade my doorbell transformer as the one in my place was super old and did not provide enough power to an older doorbell).
You first have to make sure you turn of the power to your doorbell (must be a switch on your mains), then you have to install the included puck on your current chime if its mechanical (the Google Home app is great and guides you through the install process step by step, so don't worry). This step is crucial or you could damage your brand new cam.
Second, you remove your current doorbell and then attach the wires to this one (polarity does not matter). They included everything you need if you need to attach it to wood, or concrete or stucco. They also include a wedge (in case your doorway doesn't lead directly and In Front of your door), I used the wedge as my doorway is to the side.
Then you turn the power back on and enter your wifi credentials on the Home app and voila. It's ready to go! I love that the cam has very tall aspect ratio. Is not as other cams that are super wide (but unfortunately you get like a fish eye effect), image is very natural and not "fish eyey", I can see very clearly people's faces and all the way to the floor (important for packages).
Finally, this camera can work perfectly without any subscriptions, however if you do subscribe to their Nest aware plans, you get more (like facial recognition, package recognition, recordings for 30 or 60 days etc). Oh, and let me say, this cam uses Google's machine learning algorithms and its the best at recognizing faces and HDR quality at day and night I have ever seen! You can save known faces and it will tell you, "so and so are at your front door", amazing! I highly recommend their Nest aware plan, and they give you a 30 day free trial with the cam. If you subscribe yearly, you save more money! It's just $60 a year for the basic plan and $120 for the plus one. I recommend just the $60 one, as the $120 one gives you 24/7 recording (good if you have other nest cameras around your house), but if you just want to be alerted when there is motion, rings etc the basic is fine.
Oh, and this cam records quite a few minutes before and after every event, so you don't miss anything. Before this one, I had an older "pro" cam from that other very known brand with an "R" and I would constantly miss events or it would only record the person after they were already leaving etc, NOT WITH THIS ONE, I'm so happy and let me tell you, Google's HDR video quality is the best on bright days and nights.
Highly recommend it!

Fantastic video doorbell from Google

In a time where almost everyone has some sort video camera doorbell, I'm glad I finally decided to pull the trigger and get myself one and I couldn't be happier with the Google Nest Wired. First off - this is a WIRED doorbell so you will need an existing doorbell that is wired for this to work, otherwise I would recommend looking into one of their battery powered ones. In terms of installation, it was definitely intimidating at first but Google has a step-by-step video that allows anyone to install it themselves, very helpful!
The Nest comes with 20-degree wedge that allows you to mount the doorbell in tight spaces which was very useful in my case because of the awkward angle of original doorbell. Notifications worked great for me and the video looked nice, there's definitely some better ones on the market but it gets the job done. It has a 145-degree FOV which gives a great view of everything on the camera. I haven't gotten the chance to test it out but it also allows you to play pre-recorded messages for anyone ringing the doorbell which I think is a huge plus.
My only critique is that there is only 3 hours of event history for free, if you want to save anymore than that, you'll have to pay a subscription. Regardless, this is still better than other video doorbells on the market.

Hi Damian, we really appreciate your feedback on Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen), and we’re glad that it meets your preferences and needs. Nest has long been focused on delivering quality products to our customers. We’re also focused on giving our customers value for the price, including three hours of event history right out of the box for the first time ever. On-device processing also gives our customers smart alerts and Activity Zones, which historically have required a subscription. There's no fee to stream full resolution live video and receive basic notifications, as long as your camera is connected to the internet. However, you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to record video and receive advanced notifications. With a Nest Aware subscription your video will be saved to the cloud and you’ll get extra features. Find out more what you can get with the Nest Aware subscription here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9233159

I love the form factor and the ease of installation. I upgraded from the originally nest cam and although/unfortunately the previous mount was not compatible with this one I was very satisfied.
I love now that it's also properly connected to the google home suite of apps. So separate apps are no longer required. Why isn't it five stars? Because the video quality is definitely not as sharp as the previous version. Although advertised to be the same, it's actually slightly less. I've done all the settings...etc.
What I also like about this is that the field of view is better.

Upgrading from the original Google Hello to the new Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen) has been a positive experience, primarily due to its seamless integration with the Google Home app. The video quality is noticeably improved with better HDR and a wider vertical view, making it easier to see visitors and packages. While installation was similar to the Hello, the move to managing the doorbell within the Google Home app is a major plus for those already in the Google ecosystem, offering unified control of all smart devices. The design is also sleeker. Overall, the Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen) offers enhanced features and greater convenience for Google Home users, making it a worthwhile upgrade.

Slightly Better than Gen 1 Model

As title says this doorbell is slightly better than the Gen 1 model, which is what I upgraded from. Installation is similar to 1st gen model, except there are these added wire connectors behind the doorbell which add more things that need to be tucked away.
The aspect ratio is narrower but taller on this 2nd gen model which makes it easier to view a whole person. I like the change, however I still find at times I can't view the whole person at the door.
Due to the narrower field of view I did use the included 20 degree wedge which helped provide a better viewing angle.
With the Gen 2 model you no longer have the option to use the Nest app. This upset a lot of people, but for me I'm fine with using the Google Home app. It's easy to use and still have most of the controls from the Nest App.
The video resolution is just ok. When looking at the specs it's slightly lower than the first gen but I haven't been able to tell the difference when looking at the footage between the two. There's definitely other models out there with better footage.
I'd say the main benefit in upgrading to the 2nd gen model from the 1st gen is the design. This new one has a much better look, I feel like it makes the old model look outdated. Since however I feel that's the main benefit of upgrading, I don't think it's worth it for the price.
If you're looking at buying this to replace your current standard doorbell, then I'd recommend it as it takes good video, is relatively easy to install, and it looks great.

I was contemplating since long time to get this doorbell for various reasons including Google home smooth support. instructions were very clear on set up and on what all needed to fix it on the wall. it comes with wedge and all required materials. if you already have transformer in your home working it is very easy to add. Very smooth set up and connections. I haven't used chime it comes with as I have nest hub at home that notifies me if someone at the door and turn off internal chime during set up for longer transformer life.

Once you set it up, which is super easy thanks to Google's well done system, right on the main screen is your doorbell camera feed. Click on the video and you'll be taken to a live video feed where you can then voice chat. In the activity area of Google Home it will also send you alerts of whatever you have checked for alerts (People, Packages, Cars, Movement, etc.) which is awesome by the way. It will accurately label people with items in their hands as packages, it will ALSO label when the package is no longer seen in it's sight allowing you to determine if y our family received the mail...or a thief. Solid 10/10 alerts. Also the night vision? The BEST. I used to have the Amazon Blink, it was decent at night but absolutely no where NEAR what the Google Home can do. Even without a porch light the entire porch is well lit allowing us to see who is coming onto our porch at night, and then with a porch light we can see the sidewalks and the streets.
