    Great Hardware, Software Needs Help

I wanted this to impress me. I expected it to impress me. I wasn’t. I’ve been a long time Nest owner. I’ve owned at least a dozen Nest products, as well as several other brands of smart home products. Nest has always been my favorite despite some historic shortcomings. The 2nd generation wired doorbell might be the biggest miss for me. Although, I can’t help but think that I’m being tainted by my own history. First time owners may be happy, but I’m struggling. The hardware looks slick. Slightly larger than the original with a simple modern design. Installation would have been easy, but I ran into a voltage issue. I upgraded the doorbell transformer to 16 volts for about $30. With both steps, the total time was probably 2 hours. The security screw is a nice touch too. Also, to whomever made sure that the mounting holes were the exact same as the first generation, I love you. The camera quality is decent at 960P. This time around, the doorbell can record up to an hour of footage locally in the case of an internet outage or general instability and upload when back online. This is the one feature I’m happy to see! I don’t know if I’m alone, but this unit doesn’t mount flush. Maybe I’m missing something, or the instructions were just a little too vague, but the gap between the wedge and the wall is just too much. I ended up putting some thin weather stripping around the mounting place to prevent my neurosis from driving me crazy. I also wrapped the cable clips with electrical tape to prevent water damage. The Google Home app is a mess. I know it’s being re-worked but I just can’t get over it as we sit around waiting for the transition. It’s slow, clunky and feels outdated. I miss the old Nest app – which is probably going to be declared end of life soon (speculation) – I’m struggling here with “the good ole days”. You won’t be able to use the old app, so settle in for a bumpy ride if that was your app of choice. I miss continuous recording, fast notifications, and a well-designed app. I gave this a 4 star rating, but only because I feel like I’m more hung up on what feels like a downgrade from the first generation. If you're coming from the first generation, it might feel more like a 3 star product. If I’m being objective, it’s a 4 star product. I may completely change my tune when the new Home app comes out, but until then, I just don’t know what to think.

Hi there zero325, thanks for trying out the new Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen). We appreciate the detailed review that you shared with us, and we're glad to hear that you liked the modern design, offline recording capability and the legacy support for the mounting holes. However, we're sorry to hear about the installation hiccups you encountered, and your disappointment with the Google Home app.

We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place where you can control all your favorite Nest devices and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. Here are some benefits you can get by using the Google Home app with your Nest Cam (Indoor, Wired):
      - Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup.
      - Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest Cam and a Nest Hub, just say, ""Hey Google, show me the backyard camera” to cast your camera stream to your display without any additional setup.
      - One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps.
      - Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.

We value your feedback and we'll make sure to take the information that you provided us into consideration. We'll also make sure to pass this along to the right team since we're always searching for ways to improve our products and services.
As for the issue you are having with the gap between the wedge and the wall, we'd like to assist you further and see how we can help you best. Please consider contacting our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

I was contemplating since long time to get this doorbell for various reasons including Google home smooth support. instructions were very clear on set up and on what all needed to fix it on the wall. it comes with wedge and all required materials. if you already have transformer in your home working it is very easy to add. Very smooth set up and connections. I haven't used chime it comes with as I have nest hub at home that notifies me if someone at the door and turn off internal chime during set up for longer transformer life.

I recently upgraded my home security system with the Google Nest Doorbell Wired (2nd Generation), and the experience has been nothing short of exceptional. As someone who values both convenience and top-notch security features, this smart doorbell has become an integral part of my home setup. One of the standout features of the Nest Doorbell Wired is its straightforward installation process. The package includes everything needed for a smooth setup, and the step-by-step instructions in the Nest app make it accessible even for those not well-versed in technology. Within minutes, I had the doorbell up and running, seamlessly integrating it into my existing Nest ecosystem. The design of the Nest Doorbell Wired is sleek and unobtrusive, blending seamlessly with the aesthetics of my home. The build quality is robust, giving a sense of durability and reliability. The weather resistance ensures it can withstand various outdoor conditions, providing peace of mind that it will perform consistently in any weather.

My previous video doorbell wasn’t cutting it any more, when I tried to connect it always failed, even when I adjusted the resolution down to 480 it wouldn’t connect. So, it was just basically a dumb doorbell. The resolution of the Nest is a native 960 but is better than the 1080 I previously had on my old doorbell, the difference is the Pixel count. And a vertical view that you can see a person from head to toe. With the nest it was like day and night, The wired install took literally 15 minutes. They give you a puck to install on the transformer of your chime inside. (Make sure your unit is compatible, see website) after installing the puck, I uninstalled the old doorbell and used the same holes to install the Nest. Everything you need is in the box. If you have an uneven surface, they give you two spacers to even it out. They also include a Twenty percent wedge to re position the camera. Which I did because my porch has a fence on the patio. So, guests have to walk down the patio and turn to the right to get to my door. When I repositioned it, I can get a shot of the walking up to the nest as oppose to not seeing them until they are in front of the door. I watched the install video first then added the Nest to my Google home app. The app walks you through the install, step by step. This is a major plus as I hate to stop to read directions. It is so much easier to view this on your phone during the install. After the install, and the unit connected to my home app, the camera connected almost immediately. I love this as my old one (when it did work) would take almost a full minute. The video was crisp and clear. You are able to see full body shots as well as the ability to zoom in to live shots and history. The Nest stores 3 hours of video and loops back if you set it to record constant, or you can record events and it will store them until the internal memory is full then record over older events. Should you need more, you can subscribe to Nest aware. This will save 30 days of events and open up face detection for repeat guests. Your smart speaker will announce their arrival by name. It will even call emergency services from the app. The other option is Nest aware plus which include the previously mention plus record saving events up to 60 days with 10 days constant record time. If you lose Wi-Fi signal the unit will record up to 3 hours then upload to your nest aware or nest aware plus account. If you have neither it will just record locally so you can review later, should you choose. The infrared camera is nice and clear. To test, I turned off all lights and walked up to the camera. I was able to see all my face features from several feet away. I then turned the lights back on and the view didn’t turn off the infrared immediately. I had to exit the app and come back in and then was able to view it in color. I’m sure a software change can remedy this. The Nest has built in intelligent notifications. The Nest will notify you of people, Packages, Animals, vehicles. You can also change the outside ring tone to multiple different chimes. They also have a seasonal holiday choice that has a set day that it will return to your default ring. (Holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays etc.) The nest by default will send a notification to your google smart speaker in the house, when someone is at your door and make an announcement. If you can’t get to your door, click the app and tap on a quick response that will broadcast from the Nest, such as “Just a sec”, or if a package is being dropped off, “You can just leave it”. For certain events you can set up an activity zone, whereby anything that happens will be saved so you can view it or be notified. The Nest doorbell is an all in one plus video doorbell. I highly recommend this to family and friends. The nest has many included options that others charge for.

We’re sorry to hear about having to exit the app just to view it in full color again. We suggest checking the night vision settings if it's set to 'Always On'. Great Smart Doorbell Camera

This new Nest doorbell with video is great because it is hardwired and there is no battery replacement or recharging. No battery adds more peace of mind and saves me my most valuable resource, time. I don’t need the 24 hr x 7 day video recording, which is a paid service of Nest Aware Plus Subscription, because the free 3 hours of video history is enough for my needs. I have an Android phone and use the Google Home App, which makes the installation and setup process very easy. Before installation, the doorbell transformer and chime, located near the power panel or doorbell box, must be rated at or between the ranges of 16-24VAC and 10-40VA. My transformer was next to my power panel, and it had a 16/10VA rating. If you already have an existing doorbell, all you will need is a screwdriver. Most of the time, this will not be the case for most homes, but if the old doorbell holes don’t align with the Nest doorbell plate, you might need to drill new holes. For some strange reason, my internet goes out on me once or twice a week for a few minutes; this new Nest doorbell is excellent for internet outage issues because it has internal storage that can record about one hour’s worth of video. I got this doorbell in early October, and I was able to try its seasonal theme chimes, "Halloween." So, when someone presses the doorbell, they hear the theme or tone. In October there is also "Diwali", and I guess this changes based on the season. The details of the images are great, even in darker lighting. The microphone works very well with both live and recorded audio. In the settings, you have the option to deactivate the mic. This turns it off for both live and recording. I always keep it on, so when I want to watch it live I can hear what is going on. The audio recording records both the visitor and whoever is talking to the visitor. Audio recording can also be deactivated. The camera volume can be adjusted, and at the highest volume, the sound doesn’t get distorted. The camera has infrared LEDs night vision for when there is low light, which I have not tested because my front door lights always turn on when it gets dark. The drawback of infrared LEDs' night vision is that the video turns out black and white. Night vision can be adjusted as "Always on", "Auto (default)", or "Off". I created an Activity Zone for specific types of alerts and I am impressed with how it can detect deliveries, persons, and packages. As you can see in the submitted image, I got a message with my package activity at my front door; the alert message was "Package no longer seen-Zone 1, Front Door Doorbell." Note that this device does not include the indoor house chime. Also, my existing doorbell chimes no longer sound when the Nest Doorbell button is pressed. When someone is at the door, you will get an alert on your mobile device or any compatible smart speaker. This is no issue for me because my dog always alerts me when someone is at the front door. My dog's barking alert works all the time, even when the power goes out or when the internet is interrupted. Overall, I am highly satisfied with this new Nest Doorbell camera. It works great without the subscription option, which gives three hours of event history. The video quality is very good and it does a great job of detecting persons, package delivery/pickup, and cars.

Great doorbell cam and super easy to install!

Great new generation of cam by Google/Nest. I'm really loving it. They include everything you need to install it in the box, you just have to make sure you have a wired doorbell, the transformer to it is up to the task (must be 16 to 24 v, and with good enough power) and you have a mechanical chime (if not, you can get their digital one that is optional and you have to buy). I did have everything required (a few years ago I did have to upgrade my doorbell transformer as the one in my place was super old and did not provide enough power to an older doorbell). You first have to make sure you turn of the power to your doorbell (must be a switch on your mains), then you have to install the included puck on your current chime if its mechanical (the Google Home app is great and guides you through the install process step by step, so don't worry). This step is crucial or you could damage your brand new cam. Second, you remove your current doorbell and then attach the wires to this one (polarity does not matter). They included everything you need if you need to attach it to wood, or concrete or stucco. They also include a wedge (in case your doorway doesn't lead directly and In Front of your door), I used the wedge as my doorway is to the side. Then you turn the power back on and enter your wifi credentials on the Home app and voila. It's ready to go! I love that the cam has very tall aspect ratio. Is not as other cams that are super wide (but unfortunately you get like a fish eye effect), image is very natural and not "fish eyey", I can see very clearly people's faces and all the way to the floor (important for packages). Finally, this camera can work perfectly without any subscriptions, however if you do subscribe to their Nest aware plans, you get more (like facial recognition, package recognition, recordings for 30 or 60 days etc). Oh, and let me say, this cam uses Google's machine learning algorithms and its the best at recognizing faces and HDR quality at day and night I have ever seen! You can save known faces and it will tell you, "so and so are at your front door", amazing! I highly recommend their Nest aware plan, and they give you a 30 day free trial with the cam. If you subscribe yearly, you save more money! It's just $60 a year for the basic plan and $120 for the plus one. I recommend just the $60 one, as the $120 one gives you 24/7 recording (good if you have other nest cameras around your house), but if you just want to be alerted when there is motion, rings etc the basic is fine. Oh, and this cam records quite a few minutes before and after every event, so you don't miss anything. Before this one, I had an older "pro" cam from that other very known brand with an "R" and I would constantly miss events or it would only record the person after they were already leaving etc, NOT WITH THIS ONE, I'm so happy and let me tell you, Google's HDR video quality is the best on bright days and nights. Highly recommend it!

Better than the original version, easy install, took may 1 hour, like the door bell chime attachment, made it so could use my original door bell chime in the house. The video is clear, package and person detection much better. Would recommend this to anyone, even with the price it ua wrll worth it, I was lucky got it on sale. This rwplaced my version 1 of Google door bell which lasted many years but with desert temps the covering for lens got famaged.

Once you set it up, which is super easy thanks to Google's well done system, right on the main screen is your doorbell camera feed. Click on the video and you'll be taken to a live video feed where you can then voice chat. In the activity area of Google Home it will also send you alerts of whatever you have checked for alerts (People, Packages, Cars, Movement, etc.) which is awesome by the way. It will accurately label people with items in their hands as packages, it will ALSO label when the package is no longer seen in it's sight allowing you to determine if y our family received the mail...or a thief. Solid 10/10 alerts. Also the night vision? The BEST. I used to have the Amazon Blink, it was decent at night but absolutely no where NEAR what the Google Home can do. Even without a porch light the entire porch is well lit allowing us to see who is coming onto our porch at night, and then with a porch light we can see the sidewalks and the streets.

5 Minutes to install a lifetime of security

Conclusion: The Google Nest Doorbell (Wired) second generation took 5 minutes to install while watching the video on how to install it is 11:10 (check Google's YouTube video on how to install it) Nest team did think of everything, and I mean everything when designing this mighty doorbell camera. the contents of the box include: Nest Doorbell base plate 20 degree wedge if your doorbell button is facing a less than optimal direction Chime puck to connect your chime to the nest system hex key 2 wall screws and anchors 2 spacers for not so even walls extra security key window decal to scare off thugs quick start guide safety & warranty info. setup: 1- install Google Home app - add new devise in app- Nest Doorbell wired - scan QR code on camera and follow the instructions. 2- Turn off electricity for the chime box. Go to your chime box, follow the app instructions or the youtube video and connect the chime puck (2 wires) to the chime box connectors. this step takes 2 minutes max. 3- go to your doorbell. unscrew old door bell, connect wires coming out of the wall to the nest wired DoorBell. secure door bell t wall. screw in the security screw to fix the doorbell to the baseplate. 4- turn on eectricity, follow the rest of the steps and test your doorbell in the Google Home app. all in all installation took me less than 5 minutes. design: the Google nest doorbell wired looks very simple and elegant. it also looks like its well made. Features: this is where this shines. - I was able to setup visitor announcements through my Google assistant devices like the home or the display. they do announce when someone rings the doorbell. - I am able to see my doorbell live feed on my Google Display and my next Display and on the new Google home web page. - you can set quick responses and quiet times to avoid getting notified about not so important notifications during the evening hours. - I was also able to create activity zones to exclude notifications for activities am not interested in. - with no subscription, you are able to view the last 3 hours of EVENTS in your Google home app. this is helpful and I think long enough if you dont want to opt in for a subscription. I love how easy and intuitive the Nest Doorbell wired is and how easy it is to integrate it into the Google home ecosystem.

Google Nest has finally come out with a new wired alternative to their battery powered Nest Doorbell. This is something I have specifically been waiting for and am glad to be able to talk about the difference between the two devices. Right out of the box, I love the simple packaging. I love the styling. I noticed that the wired doorbell is shorter than the battery version ( 5.1" vs 6.3"). It is still very similar in styling and even comes with it's similar install instructions and accessories to mount your doorbell. Installing the doorbell was a breeze. I already had the battery version mounted prior and because this new wired version is shorter, the mounting hole do not line up with the previously drilled holes. That was a bummer but everything else was a breeze. Being able to use the Google home app to get everything connected was nice. Google Home app is actually easy enough to navigate in and it even shows you an initial video to get everything connected just right. Different from the battery model, this wired version comes with a chime adapter that needed to be connected to our mechanical door chime. It isn't needed if you are going to only use your Google speaker devices. Video quality and aspect ratio is great. Night time viewing is decent. Microphone clarity is good enough. To take advantage, you will need the subscription that offers a 30 day recording option with Nest Aware and a Nest Aware Plus option that includes 60 days recording plus 10 days of 24/7 recording. Currently they are priced at $60/$120 a year. I recommend you at the very least get the Nest aware subscription.

I don’t know if I got a dud or not. But I would constantly have connection issues or google home app issues. Not only that, I had issues with setting up the device and I had to reach out to support because it wasnt detecting. BUT when it did work, it would work phenomenally, amazing, perfect couldn’t complain. Very streamlined with my other google products to make it a smart home. I would say the camera quality could be better by angles and picture, otherwise night vision is better than Ring and smooth interface compared to Ring. Also detects people, packages better than Ring AND I love that I can customize the doorbell sound for holidays (to be ✨extra✨).

I love the form factor and the ease of installation. I upgraded from the originally nest cam and although/unfortunately the previous mount was not compatible with this one I was very satisfied. I love now that it's also properly connected to the google home suite of apps. So separate apps are no longer required. Why isn't it five stars? Because the video quality is definitely not as sharp as the previous version. Although advertised to be the same, it's actually slightly less. I've done all the settings...etc. What I also like about this is that the field of view is better.

This doorbell is relatively straightforward to install as long as you're familiar with household wiring. The tutorials are helpful and once installed, the activation process via the app is easy. The camera works well during the day and night with great light sensitivity though I wish the sensor resolution was a bit higher. The people, pet, and package detection work great. The Google Home app features and functionality fall short of the old Nest app and Google has taken years to provide enhancements.

Hey there, Technerd. We appreciate the feedback you shared about the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). We’re glad that you find it with ease of setup and use. We hear your concerns about having a higher sensor resolution along with its app integration.

We’re aware that longtime Nest users enjoy viewing their Nest camera feeds from the Nest app. However, our priority with this launch was building a complete experience for our new cameras and doorbell in the Google Home app. We’re working on bringing full functionality to the Home app as we want to create an integrated experience with other Nest and smart home devices. We request for your patience as we’re working on a seamless solution to create a better user experience. Meanwhile, we suggest having the latest version of the Google Home app that may improve camera playback controls to make it easier to play, pause, and navigate between events from the camera history view for cameras set up in the Google Home app.

Pixel count is only one factor that impacts video quality, and it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a camera. Nest Doorbell has HDR video quality that’s optimized for a clear view in bright sun or dark. You can also adjust your cameras’ video quality that may improve the resolution. The higher the video quality setting you choose, the sharper and more detailed your footage can be, but it also uses more of your internet bandwidth. This setting lets you pick the maximum video quality for your cameras. Love this doorbell. Works great! The directions should say the door chime can’t be connected to the transformer if it’s not also a door chime itself because I thought I had a bad transformer. I was messing around with it for a couple days before I decided to try it without the chime and then, what do you know, the doorbell had power and wasn’t blinking yellow. Hallelujah! Since the install it’s been working great, but often cuts out like the Nest cameras typically do. There are period gaps throughout the day, but otherwise I’m happy!

I received the Google Nest Doorbell Wired 2nd Generation in Snow color. It was very easy to setup, I was up and running within 10 minutes. It has a very sleek sophisticated design, sturdy and well made. It is hardwired for installation with existing doorbell wiring for power, has a 145° diagonal field of view and 3:4 aspect ratio for full body visibility of guests at your door. It is Motion-activated so sends you alert right to your phone and differentiates between people, animals, packages, and vehicles, The video is very crisp and clear, also has two-way audio via built-in speaker and microphone with noise cancellation. It works with the Google Home App, so you will have to download it as it will not work with the Nest App. It captures up to 3 hours of event video history (Nest Aware subscription required for longer event video history storage). It is also compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for seamless voice control. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to get a video doorbell.
