This is an excellent thin laptop. This is easy to carry and not heavy bulk as most others. This laptop is easy to use and learn with great new design features as the fast operations, soft key functions and mouse scrolling. It charges fast and holds a full battery charge with out recharging often as most other laptops I've used in the past.I liked this laptop better than the tablets and macbooks for user friendly and weight. Its bright clear screen is beautiful with clear quality.. This would be a great laptop for the new college student!

    Great basic Windows 10 laptop!

To put this review in perspective, I'm a small business owner whose background includes building and repairing desktop and laptop PC's running every operating system from Windows 3.1 to Windows 10. I purchased this HP laptop for my 12 year old son to replace his aging, sluggish Windows 7 desktop PC. I wanted a Windows 10 laptop with decent processing speed, a 500+ GB hard disk drive (versus a solid state drive), a DVD drive (to run older PC games and play DVD movies), a comfortable, full-sized keyboard with side number pad and a brand with a low frequency of repair record. My maximum budget was $400, but I tried to focus on laptops under $300. When I began researching laptops which met my criteria, I decided to eliminate touchscreen capable models. Touchscreens continue to draw extra power, even when disabled, so battery life on touchscreen laptops will always be shorter than on similarly configured non-touchscreen models. Also, while touchscreens are great on handheld devices (phones, tablets and "2 in 1" notebooks), recent studies have shown that most users rarely use touchscreens on laptop and desktop PC's due to the poor ergonomics of having to repeatedly lean forward to use them. Finally, eliminating the touchscreen feature knocked about $100 off the cost of comparable laptops, which would allow me to either save money or add other features within my original budget range. After comparing several models and brands which met all of my new criteria, I eliminated models made by Asus, Lenovo and several other lesser known brands due to their higher frequency of repairs and uneven reviews from buyers. In the end, I was left with laptops from HP, Dell and Toshiba. I ruled out Toshiba because they've received heavy complaints from owners regarding poor support for Windows 8 software and driver issues. Since Windows 10 contains many major elements borrowed from Windows 8, I didn't want to risk buying a Toshiba laptop which might become an expensive paperweight after an operating system update. When I compared models from HP and Dell, I realized that the Dell laptops tended to be priced about 10-15% higher than HP models with either comparable or identical components and features, so narrowing my choices to HP models was an easy decision as a frugal shopper. I purchased this model on sale for about $260 in December 2015. Before giving my son this HP laptop for Christmas, I booted it up, uninstalled most of the ridiculous bloatware and updated the Windows operating system. As a few other reviewers have mentioned, although this laptop is described as running Windows 10, it does require a MASSIVE update to fully transition from its original Windows 8.1 base operating system to being a true Windows 10 laptop. This initial update took nearly 3 hours over a fairly fast wifi connection over a cable modem. This looonnnnngggg update time may have been due to the update size or it may have been due to heavy traffic on the Windows Update servers in the week before Christmas. Regardless of the reason, updates this large are always a nuisance for consumers and I almost deducted one star because of it. Once the OS was updated, this laptop booted up quickly and so far my son and I have both been impressed by its speed and performance. While we haven't tested it too heavily yet, this laptop seems to perform as well as laptops costing twice as much! The screen is bright and sharp and both DVD movies and older PC games like Half Life and Lego Star Wars seem to load and play smoothly. Sound quality is adequate for a laptop, but I've purchased a moderately priced 3 piece Logitech speaker system to improve the sound when my son uses this laptop at home. The battery life indicator shows that the battery should provide power for 3-4 hours of moderate use, but we haven't fully tested that out yet. I plan to update this review as we test out this laptop more thoroughly over the next few weeks. In conclusion, if you're a power user who likes to run multiple graphics-heavy programs, you're a serious gamer or you're looking for an ultra-slim, ultra-light power notebook, then I suggest that you focus on laptops in the $850+ price range. However, if you're seeking a capable, comfortably laid out Windows 10 laptop for students, home users or light small business usage, then this HP laptop offers the best value on the market! In fact, this laptop performs so well that I would've paid $350-400 for it with no hesitation, so it simply can't be beat for $280 or less!

A very good unit, especially for the price. No real complaints, only a few discoveries after the purchase: 1-NO status LEDs visible from the top; only TINY power and disk activity LEDs on the side and you have to look for them. 2-It has 4Gb RAM, specs say not consumer accessible nor upgradable. Not quite true: you have to remove the entire bottom plate and optical drive, but there is an empty SODIMM slot. Mine is now at 8Gb and worth the effort (as you would expect with Win10) 3-Every other HP laptop I have had in the past six years uses the same power supply/AC adapter. Not this one. Same electrical specs, different plug. Arrrggghhh. 4-Most other HP laptops have the ability to activate or deactivate the touchpad by double-tapping in the upper-left corner (with status LED, see #1 above). Very handy to prevent spurious cursor jumps when typing. Not this one. On the redeeming side, the settings can be set that touchpad is automagically deactivated when a mouse is plugged in (corded or cordless, haven't tried a bluetooth mouse). 5-Battery cell count is low, but battery life is surprisingly good It is a good machine, especially considering the price. I hope this information makes for a better informed decision on your part.

I purchased this laptop for general internet browsing and some light gaming and it hasn't disappointed in that aspect. Just like most laptop trackpads I've used, I wasn't satisfied so I simply paired with a simple usb mouse I had laying around. I like to game a lot and this works to play old games that are not as graphically intense. Don't use this to play newer games you'll have a hard time. When you open the laptop cover, the material surrounding the keyboard does a great job of not attracting oil or fingerprints. However, the same cannot be said of the laptop cover which if you touch it you'll see oil on it. Not a big deal but some people might be taken aback by this. I don't mind Windows 10 too much but be sure to disable all the Microsoft spybot features when you are installing. Otherwise its a fine system. Let me say for the record I got this on sale at $230 and for that price this is an absolute steal. The included CD/DVD optical drive and SD-card reader are great to have as well.

Not a bad upgrade from my old laptop

I had my previous laptop for many years (it had Windows Vista on it) and when the hard drive finally gave out I had to finally give in and upgrade to a new laptop. After consulting online through many different businesses, forums and friends I decided to go with Windows 10 (as I'm more used to the flow of older versions of Windows), and ultimately decided to make my purchase at a local Best Buy. The customer service rep was friendly and knowledgeable, and helped me make the purchase I made. As for the laptop itself, it runs pretty smoothly, and I like it although the keyboard takes some getting used to (my previous laptop didn't have a 10 key pad). I've had it maybe a month, and I haven't used it that much, especially online and have only downloaded a virus software program, and it's starting to seem a little sluggish, which I hope is temporary. We'll see how it pans out but so far I'm happy with my purchase.

I bought this laptop just for basic use. I don't do any type of gaming. It's a little slow but the program I run on it is kind of big and has a huge amount of files. I'm still getting used to Windows 10 as I was previously using vista and xp. I don't remember what the battery life is listed as in the specs but I get 3-4 hours on each charge. I don't care for the computer shutting down the screen at 10% on its own. It doesn't like to let you use the computer past that point and makes you plug it in. But other than running slower than I expected it works great for what I use it for.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my wife. She is very happy with it. I am even happier with it given the price I paid for it. It has all the capabilities that she needs and I'm sure it will serve her well for years to come. I rated it a "4" because Windows 10 presents some challenges until you learn your way around it, but perhaps that isn't quite fair because neither my wife nor I have any complaints about the performance of the computer itself. The machine itself is a great machine!

Needed a newer laptop for running MS Office. This one was among the least costly I found with in no particular order; 1. good sized hard drive. 2. Windows 10. 3. HDMI output. 4. Good reviews. I like the screen size and weight; although it is no ultrabook it is not priced like one, either. In-store pickup was a definite plus because I was buying during the Christmas rush, needed it soonest and didn't want to risk shipment to my doorstep - there were problems with thieves following parcel delivery trucks - but would have risked it for a better price. An added benefit was low cost bundling MS Office Home and Student 2016, slightly more than a year subscription to Office 365 but lots less than two years. Fit, finish and performance do not disappoint.

Having previously upgraded my home desktop to Windows 10, I thought it would be more user friendly, since I was able to make my desktop look and act as it did using Windows 7. But this laptop did give me some problems. I don't believe it's the laptop itself, just glitches with the operating system. Haven't been able to get photos to automatically delete from SD card after importing, so we have to manually delete them after import has finished. Also had a lot of problems with web browsers and search engines not playing nice with each other. Appears that Microsoft is trying to force certain browsers and search engines to be used, such as goggle chrome and bing. I am not a fan of either of these products and did not have any problems using my choices with my desktop upgrade. I had to do some research and go through setup steps several times before I could get my husband's gmail account to operate properly. Other then these types of annoying issues, the laptop works fine, has plenty of storage and speed. I would buy another one. Hopefully some of the glitches will be resolved by then.

I love it! Does everything I need it for and more. Perfect for students and/or people who want to watch movies and multitask. Built in mouse is great. It took a little time to get used to right & left clicks but it works well. I'm a fan of Windows 10! 4 GB memory is more than enough for me. Built in DVD player is a very nice feature and I'm able to burn my own discs. I can also connect this to my HDTV with an HDMI cable very easy. The built in wireless networking feature makes startup very fast without any lag. The price tag for this laptop is perfect for any budget considering what you get for the money. The only downside (not that there really is any) would probably be no touch-screen but so what? Everything else is great! I would recommend some form of Microsoft Office especially if you're a student.

I just needed a lightweight laptop with storage and decent performance as I was going back to school, and the arms on my older hp laptop broke. For the price, I would recommend this for people that need it for basic use. This is obviously not a gaming or high performance laptop. The speakers leave something to be desired.
