Solid Fit - Attractive Design - Finicky Ear Pieces
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
These sharp looking JBL headphones are designed for active users. They are engineered to stay on your ears during the most aggressive workouts but have very finicky ear pieces, known as: "enhancements", that are frustrating to set up.
Here is a summary of 10) Pro's & Con's:
PRO'S
1- Twistlock design retains headphones securely. Compared with the Apple AirPods, these headphones will not fall off your head during physical exercise & running, even in rain & / or sweating conditions. - Best Feature!
2- Very attractive appearance & design.
3- Good 12" length for connecting cord - if anything, it could be 1/2" longer.
4- Beautiful packaging with magnetic closure.
5- JBL name & reputation.
6- Classy water resistant carry pouch with silicon texture exterior.
7- Heart rate monitor works reliably, but I always wear an Apple Watch Generation 2, so I could have skipped that feature & saved $50.
8- Solid, easy to connect Bluetooth provides 25' range from source.
9- Superior sound isolation - those around you do not hear bits or pieces of your music.
10- Handy cord retaining clip.
CON'S
1- "Enhancers" (silicon ear pieces) are a pain to install for big fingered people like me. They are a lot of trouble to deal with; there should be a simpler method to insure proper fit to the ear canal. - Worst Feature!
2- Disappointing sound quality, totally dependent upon proper seal with the ear. Primarily high frequencies heard and virtually no bass with Size 7 enhancers. After struggling to try Size 6 in order to possibly hear more bass, I decided to put up with the lack of bass, rather than fiddle any longer & probably tear the enhancers.
3- Compared with Apple AirPods, which do not require fiddling to achieve great sound, these JBL's do require considerable fiddling to get good sound with bass frequencies - and the AirPods sound better.
4- Compared with Apple AirPods, which insert in your ear & automatically connect via Bluetooth, these JBL's require manual pressing & holding the button to connect or disconnect Bluetooth.
5- I feel for $199, the free One year membership to MapMyRun app should be free Lifetime membership.
6- Printed documentation has tiny print, with barely legible font.
7- Compared with the dual microphone Apple AirPods, which serve as noise cancellation, these JBL's pick up the noise around you & make it difficult for the person on the other end to hear & to understand you. I peal them off my ears and take the calls with my iPhone now, so each of us can hear one another. Useless for phone calls except in a very quiet setting.
8- Bluetooth control is a pain, located on the wire itself & nearly midway between the ears with tiny buttons.
9- "Adjust headphones" prompt is annoying as you put the headphones on or take them off.
10- Separate pairing required for sound & for heartbeat monitoring.

PROs
+ Workout-friendly remote: I was initially worried that the in-line remote on the wire would be flopping around and hitting me in the face while I worked out. But, surprisingly, it stays behind my ear and out of the way, even when doing burpees. The remote allows you to conveniently adjust the volume, change the track, play/pause your music and answer phone calls.
+ Sound quality: The sound quality is very good on these earbuds. Bass is light, but music is clear and not distorted.
+ Heartbeat sensor: I like that these track my heart rate without needing to wear an uncomfortable chest strap. Whenever I do pull-ups or push-ups, my Apple Watch's heart rate sensor sometimes stops work or shows a very low reading, but that was not an issue with these earbuds. They do not seem to be affected by arm movements like the Apple Watch (and many other optical sensors). I compared the readings with my chest strap and found the numbers from the JBL earbuds to be very close. The heart rate worked with my Under Armour Record, MapMyRun and RunKeeper apps.
+ Bluetooth range: The range is very good on these earbuds. In an open gym, I was able to work fairly far away (20-30 ft) with minimal interruptions.
CONs
- Apple Watch: While I was able to pair the music portion of these earbuds to my Apple Watch and listen to music, I could not get the heart rate readings to work after pairing the heart rate portion of these earbuds.
- Comfort: The ear hooks (that go over top of your ear) are fairly stiff, and my ear felt a little achy after wearing these earbuds for more than an hour.
- Seals out sound: The earbuds seal into your ear canal and blocks outside sounds. I would prefer some sound to come in for when I'm running outside, for example. Also, when talking on the phone with these in, my voice sounds like I'm underwater to me (not the caller).
Overall. these earbuds work very well and the built-in heart rate sensor is very convenient. The earbuds stay in place and produce great sound, but they can get a little uncomfortable over long periods.

These headphones are made for the runners or gym use most of all, very sturdy construction, perfect fit in the ear (my first reaction was - what a huge ear tips, but when I tried them - they actually fit my ear perfectly and don't even attempt to fall out), wire could be secured to the shirt with the clip included. Another advantage is the fact that battery is inside the headphones and not in the neck band (neck bands typically bounce on your neck when running which is very uncomfortable).
There is no noise cancelling at all - you are perfectly aware of your surroundings.
Pairing with the phone was easy, but I should mention that headphones actually do pair as 2 separate devices - one is the audio device and another one is the heart rate monitor. It's important to make sure that heart rate monitor actually gets paired, otherwise heart rate sensor would not activate. No special apps is required - just pair your headphones and use them for music, if you want to know your heart rate - just slightly tap right headphone and you will hear it.
On the negative side - headphones are so packed with features that leaves very small room to the acoustic drivers - as a result sound quality is not that great, almost no low frequencies. I'm comparing these to JBL Reflect Aware and the difference is night and day, I would definitely go with Reflect Aware model over these.
Overall Pros:
+ Great design, very well thought thru, perfect fit and no tendency to fall out. 4 different earth sizes are included.
+ Sweat proof
+ Heart rate sensor built in and proved to be very accurate
+ Easy pairing with the phone or even watch, no need to take the phone for a run!
+ Included silicone carrying pouch and a very flexible USB charging cable (17")
Overall Cons:
- Short battery live - around 5 hours
- Not so great sound quality, especially on the low end of frequencies

Excellent Sound and Stays on Your Ears!

Being an avid runner, I was eager to put the JBL Under Armour Sport Heart Rate Wireless In-Ear Headphones to the test.
The headphones come in a very nice looking red-colored premium box. The inside contents include:
-wireless headphones with sport clip
-4 sizes of eartips with the medium sized ones pre-installed on the headphones
-1 red-colored micro usb charging cable
-a carrying case
-a quick start guide
-warranty, safety, and FCC info pamphlets
-an access code for a one year membership to the MapMyRun app
There are no control buttons on the earbuds themselves. The on/off button and +/- buttons are located on the inline microphone on the right hand side of the connecting wire. The heart rate sensor is located inside the left ear bud and is illuminated with a green colored LED light when it is activated.
If you are not familiar with JBL headphones, they have a unique way of securing on the ears. First you insert the earbuds at a slight angle and then rotate or twist it into place on your ear sort of like a screw. Once secured, you simply wrap the over the ear hooks over the back of the ear. There is a sport clip that you can attach your shirt collar to help stabilize the wire.
There are four different sizes of silicone eartips which JBL calls “Enhancers.” They are large (size 8), medium (size 7, pre-installed), small (size 6), and extra small (size 5). It is very critical to get the correct fitment on your ears as this will affect the sound quality as I will describe later. It is best to try the different sizes and select the one that forms the best seal in your ear.
The twistlock method of securing the headphones really do keep the earbuds in the ear. I was impressed at how securely they managed to stay put. I had to really tug on the earbud to remove it from my ear. They are much more secure than the sport earbud offerings from competing companies that utilize a wingtip design to secure the earbuds. However, it did feel a little bit uncomfortable at first as the edge of the securing tip pressed on the bowl of my ear, but after a few adjustments and changing out to the correct eartip, I was used to it and the earbud felt more comfortable.
Connecting via bluetooth to my smartphone was quick. I did not experience any issues. I noticed that there is no NFC option available for the headphones. In my opinion, NFC pairing should be standard on headphones. The bluetooth range is standard. I managed to walk approximately 25-30 feet from my connected smartphone before the audio started cutting out.
If you have used other bluetooth headphones, you will notice that they have an audible hiss. Some manufacturers do a better job of masking the hissing noise. On this set of JBL headphones, the hissing noise is faint, but audible, though it quickly gets drowned out when the audio starts playing.
I was able to wear my headphones for over four hours without any major discomfort. I did have some minor discomfort from the edge of the securing eartip that was pressing on the bowl of my ear as I described earlier that left some red spots on my ear. However, after selecting the correct enhancer tip size, the earbud felt very comfortable.
My headphones came pre-charged from the factory. They live up to their promised 5 hours of battery life. I got a little over 5 hours during my initial test of the headphones. Once fully discharged, it took approximately 1.5 hours to fully re-charge the battery.
Now onto sound quality. If you select the correct eartip, you will get pretty dynamically balanced, bass rich sounds. Initially, I had the incorrect ear tip size on my ear. It did not form a proper seal around the bowl of my ear. As a result there was a gap between my ear and the earbud that made the audio sound like it was mostly treble with a slight hint of bass. Once I had the correct eartip twistlocked onto my ear and a tight seal was formed, the audio really opened up to reveal a strong base response, with mids and trebles present. If the factory tuned, pre-set sound signature is not to your liking, you can adjust the frequency response with an equalizer app on your phone. I adjusted the equalizers on my phone to emphasize a little more treble, and the headphones responded with more highs and crispness in sound without compromising the rich bass tones.
Sound is well contained in the earbud. I turned up the volume and asked my wife to sit next to me and listen for sound leakage. She was unable to hear my music even when I turned the volume up to a level that was unbearable for my liking.
Sport headphones such as these are not designed to isolate sound. With the headphones secured on your ears, you will still hear ambient noise, although a little muffled depending on how securely you twist locked the ear bud to your ears. This is by design as you will want to be able to hear your environment (e.g. oncoming traffic) if you are running outdoors. However, the outside world is drowned away once you turn up the volume on the headphones.
The heart rate monitor is easy to use. With the earbuds secured on your ears, you simply tap the right ear bud to turn on the heart rate monitor which is indicated by a green colored LED light on the left earbud. If the monitor cannot detect your heart rate, it will ask you to adjust the left ear bud until it detects the heart rate. Once detected, you simply tap the right earbud again and the heart rate will be announced through the audio in the headphones.
I tried the headphones while I ran on the treadmill and put up a good soaking, sweaty run. The earbuds stayed securely on my ears, not even loosening up a bit during my entire workout. My sweat soaked the earbuds and made them slippery, but again the earbuds stayed put. I also secured the clip to my shirt collar to prevent the wire from swinging around. Time will tell if the earbuds hold up to sweat resistance.
The inline microphone also works well. The person at the other end of the phone heard my voice clearly. The inline mic has three buttons. The center button is used for powering on/off, pausing the music, answering and disconnecting a phone call, and connecting to a bluetooth device. The + and – buttons are used to increase/decrease volume and skip music tracks. Also located on the inline mic is the LED status light indicator. Two quick blue flashes indicates that it is connected; single blue flashes mean that the power is on, but there is no device connected; alternating blue/red flash indicates that it is pairing; red flashes mean that the battery is low and needs a re-charge; and a constant red light indicates the battery is re-charging.
A very nice looking, premium pouch is included to store the headphones. I'm not sure what material the exterior of the pouch is made out of, but it appears to be some type of moisture resistant silicone, rubber, or neoprene material. There is a very premium feel to it.
The headphone can be connected to Under Armour's Record app which is a fitness app with a dashboard that tracks your exercise activities and progress. Additionally there is an access code for a one year membership to the MapMyRun app.
Finally, although not its intended use, these headphones do very well for the audio-visual experience as well. What I mean here is that if you wanted to watch a movie using these headphones, you will experience pretty much perfect syncing of the sound to the visual movement of the lips. In other words, I could not discern any audio lag when watching a movie.
In summary, I think the JBL Under Armour Sport Wireless Heart Rate headphones should be on any serious athlete's short list of wireless sport headphones. The twistlock method of attaching the headphones really make them stay securely on your ears. With deep, rich bass and sound performance that JBL is known for and coupled with a heart rate monitor that connects with Under Armour's fitness apps, this pair of headphones really tries to outrun the competition. However, all these features come at a premium price. JBL also manufactures wireless sport headphones without the heart rate monitor at a lower price point, so it will be up to you to decide if the heart rate monitor is worth the price premium.

JBL has a history of not compromising on sound and as an audiophile I have stood by the brand for years. Their latest Under Armour Sport Heart Rate Wireless ear buds, however, only produce average sound quality. The quality isn't *bad* but there are higher quality earbuds (not for exercise) out there. Given they are most likely to be worn in loud environments like a gym or roadway, volume and fit likely trump audio quality for many users.
To test the sound quality I streamed from three different sources: higher quality MP3 downloads (256 or better bitrate), Google Music and Slacker.com all on a MotoX phone. 80s pop and alternative playback was less than stellar but that could be the era/recordings. Modern hip-hop/rap/pop produced noticeably richer tones and deeper bass. Modern alt and rock was decently balanced.
Perhaps more important to consider are the "exercise" aspects: volume, reliability, ease of use/functionality, and fit/design.
Starting with volume, I had no complaints. You can crank it up to unsafe levels with no problem and minimal distortion.
Reliability is tough to gauge as they have only been in use a week, however. I did notice a few drop-outs (i.e. "digital gaps or skips") per hour long workout when streaming. Hard to know if that was earbuds, bluetooth or streaming service. They seem to charge fast but there is no way to know the progress of the charge. I first IGNORED the included 1-foot USB-to-mini cable. Instead I used the same cable I use to charge other devices off my laptop, but it would not charge these earbuds. Switching to the included cable allowed me to charge from laptop. (I also was able to charge using my phone's wall charger.) It should be noted that these earbuds do NOT come with a wall charger, just a USB-to-mini cable.
Ease of use is fine once you have everything figured out. Disclaimer: I don't read instructions but I did have to hit up the manual to figure out what I was doing wrong when turning them on and pairing. (Turns out I was holding the wrong button for on/off.) Once your buds are paired there's very little that can go wrong. There is "rocker" button on the cord for volume, skipping, microphone, etc. and it is easy to reach during a workout. I did not use the buds to take or place a phone call.
The fit is a bit bulky. The buds themselves are just a bit larger in diameter than a dime and have a fair amount of thickness. At first it seems there is no way they will fit your ear right, but they do (as advertised) "twist-lock" into your ear fairly well. The around-the-ear hook helps hold everything in place. I wore them for 4 hours in the office one day and found them very uncomfortable when worn in excess of a 60-90 minutes. My workouts, on the other hand, are usually only 60 minutes and they did not pose any discomfort for that short amount of time. I sweat profusely and, although I mostly ride a bike, I was stunned that these earbuds actually stayed put even when in full sweat. I cannot vouch for these when running, jumping, etc. as that is not part of my routine. I also tested them indoors so I cannot speak to ambient/wind noise. There is a clip to help hold your cord to a shirt. With multiple sizes of ear attachments chances are you will find one that works for you.
I use Endomondo which paired with the buds and heart rate monitor easily. I also used the suggested Under Armour app and have already uninstalled it as it was not beneficial to my needs. I found the heart rate monitor feature annoying. You tap your right ear to activate the sensor. My sensor would come and go frequently. A female voice constantly informed me that "heart rate monitor on, heart rate detected, heart rate disconnected, etc." This was very distracting and made me question the reliability of the heart rate monitor itself. I also struggled to get my music to play when the buds were paired with the Under Armour app, but that could have been because I don't read manuals.
Overall I was not dissatisfied with these earbuds, but not overwhelmed either. I was surprised that they stayed in my ear for me because they are a bit big for in-ear buds, but I was unimpressed by the heart-rate feature and am not sure I would pay a premium for that feature in an earbud. My "yes" recommendation hinges primarily on the fact that they stayed in my ear better than any other earbuds I have exercised with in the past.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. In order to ensure the best heart rate accuracy, it is important that you are using the proper size and the headphones securely fit in the ear. The size 7 enhancer is pre-installed on the headphones and 3 additional sizes (5, 6, 8) are available in the box. Often times the most accurate signal is achieved by using the largest size that fits comfortably in your ears. Once you’ve found the right size, it’s important to ensure that the enhancers are properly installed on the ear buds so that material is fully stretched over the bud and the window for the heart rate (HR) sensor is not covered. More helpful tips for getting the best results: -Insert the earphone into your ear so that the green heart rate sensor on the LEFT ear bud is fully hidden inside the ear (behind your tragus). -The ear loop should not be pushed backwards to align with arc of the ear perfectly; it is likely there will be negative space between the headphone loop and your ear. I'm all in on UA apparel, so I thought I'd give their Earphones a try. I particularly liked the offer of a Heart Rate monitor function. And just my luck, this is the only thing that doesn't work.
Pros:The sound quality is adequate, they fit in and around my ears very well
And they are not phased by my sweat.
Cons: Heart Rate monitor doesn't work. Battery Life is really short. 3.5 hours at most.

I'm about to return for the 4th time-same problem

I never write reviews but feel as though I need to for these. I have had the same issue with four different pairs. After getting a brand new pair yesterday, during my first workout they stopped working again. Will be taking them back again. It's the HR monitor. It stops working. Audio is fine. The very first time this happened after a few weeks using them, one day when I powered them on I kept getting over and over "searching for HR" or "heart rate not detected" repeated message. Instead of flashing blue or red like normal, it flashed a solid pinkish color and wouldn't go off (see attached picture). JBL said this was a known defect and to return them. Luckily Best Buy helped me even though I didn't purchase the protection plan. After I received the new pair (with a purchase plan) the same thing happened again the first time I used them. I retuned them for a new pair. My third pair lasted about two months until I returned them on Saturday for the same problem. And now, the first time I I used them again, the same thing happened AGAIN. I will not be getting my 5th pair. Will try something else and it will not ever be a JBL product. To make matters worse, JBL, instead of owning up to restocking shelves with a known defect, sent me an email telling me I should try some of their other headphones. What a joke. Terrible product, terrible customer support. Thank goodness I got the protection plan from Best Buy. I've never in my life experienced something like this and I have no idea how I have not found any similar reviews considering this has happened on FOUR NEW PAIRS. I just don't get it. If I could give 0 stars I would.

The sound quality is not anywhere compared to what the cost is for these headphones. My 30.00 wireless headphones that I purchased through Groupon years before buying these work 10x better than the underarmor headphones. The battery life is poor. Have to charge every day you want to use them. I do not like how you have to twist them forward then backwards to suction into each ear. I wish I could return these because it was a waste of money

The sound quality was pretty good. It fit great. But if you are not someone who walks around with your device in your pocket you will definitely lose your Bluetooth connection once you are more than 20 feet away from your device. HR is spot on. Battery last around 2.5 hrs if working out and listening to music as most are. So compared to Powerbeats1&2 ~6.5 hrs of power, it gets annoying having to charge it so often. But it's obviously doing more. The sound is okay.

JBL - Under Armour Sport Heart Rate Wireless In-Ear Headphones - Model: UAJBLHRMB
SUMMARY: I’m having trouble recommending these headphones outright because of the lack of bass. The sound was quite nice, but only with some effort to make the ear canal connection tighter. With the right fit these are a 5* item with a very pleasing sound quality with very nice bass. That’s not going to work for me and others with similar fit problems who will be disappointed, so I must qualify my score. When they fit, customers will be very pleased. The heart rate sensor was reliable enough to be useful.
These are unique in-ear headphones that offer a HEART MONITOR feature. I’m going to address them first as headphones, ignoring the heart rate capability until later in the review.
AS HEADPHONES: The packaging advertises high quality and includes a soft travel case. These are rechargeable, bluetooth wireless, and include the phone mic with in-wire controls for easy interaction with your phone. I used them with an iPhone6. CONNECTING to my bluetooth was quick and reliable. I found a fairly comfortable fit with one of the 4 pair (size 7) of the included silicon ear cushions. These are not easy to change and they seem like they might tear, but having changed to EVERY size, I can confirm they are also tough. I thought the single connecting cable between ear pieces could have been a few inches longer for easier access to the controls.
SOUND QUALITY: This was a smooth, detailed sound with no harshness. Female voices sounded very natural as did instrumentals. But, they also had little bass content unless I made an effort to press against the ear pieces to improve contact with my ear canals. Changing ear pieces made little difference, as every other size made the fit/comfort poor, and the sound did not improve. For me, this was an important, but near miss. In my unassisted tests, the absence of bass was unacceptable. I had the sense that the design flaw was a too flat or short ear piece that never made adequate contact with my ear canal. I can’t imagine anyone would have my exact issue. [For context, consider that those Apple iPhone earpods that everyone else has used for years never came close to comfortable for me. Hated their fit] Comparing these ear pieces with another competitor’s ear buds suggested my observations about size and shape were pretty close . . . at least for my ear design. Your anatomy will be different.
AS HEART RATE MONITOR: Let’s agree that these are not EKGs and technicians won’t be losing their jobs. While I had little trouble getting the ear phone sensor to get a reliable pulse in my short test period, regular readouts were intermittent. On demand readouts made by pressing the right ear switch were mostly reliable, but not 100%.

They're Good Sports Headphones But not Great

The JBL sport wireless headphones with a heart rate monitor function as excepted. They have a 5 hour charge with about 2 hours to fully charge when drained. The sound quality is good and no distortion is heard when raising the volume to max capacity. That being said, these headphones don't get very loud. I was still able to hear my surroundings while running outside. In terms of comfort these headphones are subpar. They do not feel good but they're manageable for a workout of about an hour. After that they start to hurt and shouldn't be worn for casual listening if you plan on wearing them for long periods of time. Although they are not comfortable they do stay in the ear really well. After finding the correct sizes for my ears(6 on left and 5 on right) they stayed in even after brutally sweating in the hot sun. The connection does drop at times even when wearing an armband as recommended but it wasn't enough to frustrate me because it doesn't happen too often. Also I found that it usually happened more when the battery was running low which is a good warning indicator to get them charged. The in-line controls sit on the back of your neck on the right side and they are a bit difficult to reach during a run or workout but at least they have that option. The last feauture is obviously the most intriguing as they were able to put a heart rate monitor on this pair of headphones. The heart rate sensor is on the left earbud and can be seen as it lights up green when it is on. I have been using a ton of different heart rate monitors from the ones on treadmills to fitbits to smart watches and chest straps. These are really good at determining heart rate in my opinion. My average heart rate for an intense run was around 180 using these headphones and I get within 5 BPM with different types of chest straps. It is good for determining calorie loss and you can monitor your heart rate during any activity as long as you are connected to an app that supports the heart rate feature. Just lightly press the JBL logo on the right earbud and it will tell you your current heart rate. One of the great things about purchasing this pair of headphones was the free year subscription to mapmyrun which is an added bonus. I would definitely recommend this pair.

Everything about these headphones are high quality. From the design of the box to the way they fit in your ears, you can tell they are well made. After opening the box, it took a few minutes to figure out the right size earbuds. They come with 4 sizes and are a little difficult to replace, but the buds are well designed and fit well in your ears once you find the right size.
After that, I charged the headphones by plugging into my laptop. It only took about 15 minutes to charge, which is nice. Setting up to Bluetooth was also effortless and I installed the UA record app, which allows you to record your heartbeat as well as other fitness goals and stats.
To get your heart rate you just need to touch the right earbud. This was easy and very convenient and the sensor works extremely well. The only downside was that whenever I would adjust or push the earpieces in, it would tell my heart rate.
Now for the sound. The sound quality was good but not great. I guess I was expecting a little more bass and higher volume. With the volume maxed out the headphones were only about 1/2 to 2/3 as loud as my ultra cheap wireless headphones. I'm not sure if that is to conserve battery power, space, or if it was the source of my music. I was listening to Amazon Music. I messed with the sound for a while and couldn't figure out how to override the max volume. This is the only reason I did not rate this product 5 stars. I'm hoping that the volume issue was because of my iPhone or Amazon Music. I am definitely going to try some other music sources and devices.
Two other cool functions about this is it can be used to make phone calls and that the controls can pause and skip songs from your playlist. I haven't had a chance to use as a phone yet, but I did use the controls to cycle through Amazon Music and it worked effortlessly.
Overall, I would say that this is a really good product and especially worth it if you find value in the heart rate monitor.

They work and sound great, they are uncomfortable in the ear. The charge does not last as long as advertised.

These headphones have great sound and are easy to use. I do wish I could get the heart rate while listening to music, but that might be user error.
