Long time MH player here since psp days. This is the most beginner friendly MH to date for any new players out there looking to get into the franchise. Currently I'm HR4 and haven't encountered anything too difficult to defeat. With that being said however, I'm still enjoying the gameplay quite a lot. You can create your canine companion to look how you want it and also the cat companion. They do add a lot of random dialogue that can get annoying but I changed the language to japanese so I don't understand what's being said and therefore not getting annoyed by unnecessary commentary.

All the new gimmicks they bring in MHR make the fight fun and exciting and all worth the while. It also looks great while playing on switch on or off the dock.

Generational masterpiece. Ive been playing MH games since Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U. This game even rivals World, and in many respects exceeds its excellence. There's a bar of entry which requires learning the game mechanics. New players will think its "slow and clunky" at first. But stick with it and you'll later wonder how you could't see how it feels so fast and fluid.
One of the greatest games of the generation and certainly on Switch

This has been a refreshing update to the Monster Hunter universe. The wire bug ability has completely changed the way you play. It might have less monsters but the tedious grinding has been severely reduced. It’s one of my favorite MH games

This game is really good and I would recommend it to any monster hunter fan or any person who seems interested in it. The game is just really fun to play and the gameplay never gets old. There are so many different ways to play and the amount of content you get is definitely worth the full $60. They are even giving us more content with free updates which just gives us more monsters to hunt and new items to get. This game has very few flaws and I can't see anyone really hating the game. Wirebugs and the palamutes are great additions to the game and it makes the games mobility much better. If hunting giant monsters seems interesting too you in any way, you should pick this game up.

I tried playing Monster Hunter World. Felt like it took forever to progress solo. I was a new player to the series, and the mechanics were overwhelming. Fights felt long and tedious. Thought maybe it just wasn't for me. I picked up Rise mostly because of the wirebug mechanic as I love everything grapple hook based, and man this game is a treat. The complex mechanics are still there but more streamlined. Wirebug makes traversal and getting around so much easier. Same with riding your palamute. Being able to ride large creatures and have them fight each other is awesome. The Rampage events are tower defense based and require quick planning but can be fun. This game runs amazing on Nintendo Switch, must be the RE engine, cus on handheld it's impressive. Definitely, low resolution on a TV screen but still very playable because the frame rate is smooth. Only played 20 hours so far but the gameplay loop will hook you in mostly because of the new mechanics. Also the music is fantastic. Characters are charming. Cutscenes are surprisingly high quality. I recommend this to any action game fan who wants something they could spend an hour or so at a time until you play 8 hours straight because it turns out its really fun.

As a huge fan of the Monster Hunter series, this entry was a welcome addition. The gameplay is smooth and quick paced with the new addition of the wirebugs. The game performs well on the Switch, but not quite as well as World did on the PS4. The content is a little light for a main entry, but I say this having put hundreds of hours into it already. Additionally, a major expansion is coming this upcoming Summer that will expand on the game quite a bit.

Best and most accessible Monster Hunter game

This is the most accessible Monster Hunter game in the franchise and also one of the best. Here are some of my thoughts.
This is one of the best MH games for playing Solo and on the go. The hunts typically take about 15-20 minutes and you don't spend 10 minutes trying to find the monster. Its perfect for a quick hunt. It also allows you to pause in offline mode which MHW does not do even when playing solo.
The performance and visuals defy logic. This game runs at a solid 30fps and with visuals that rival BoTW. Load times in town are non existent. There are some load times when going into a hunt, but once in, the entire map is loaded like MHW instead of zones like MHGU.
Multiplayer is fantastic but mainly because the community itself is great. It doesn't have the "Flare" feature from MHW where you can send a flare to allow others to help on a quest. It simply lets you create a quest to allow others to join from outside of your lobby. Effectively the same thing for when you need some help on quests. So don't feel like you need to play with others, this is made with portable in mind, but also know if you need help, there is good community wiling to help.
Rampage mode is one of the new big features and is one of the most interesting changes. Its a chaotic tower defense game where you fight waves of monsters. Once you get into the flow and understand what's happening, it becomes less chaotic.
Palamutes and Wirebugs were also added. Both effectively make this one of the most mobile experience in MH. Palamutes allow you to ride them and you can use items while riding. Wirebugs change how you move through the map and allow for much more verticality when exploring.
One gripe is that while its the most accessible game, it doesn't tell you everything about how its systems work. There are systems on top of systems and you have to figure it out or look up a lot of it.

MH Rise is Excellent

After putting many hours into the online play for Rise, I can strongly recommend it to any Monster Hunter series veteran. The gameplay feels great, and the addition of the wirebug adds new combos and mobility options. For new players, the game retains many of the accessibility and quality of life features introduced in MH World.
As of writing this, the multiplayer campaign goes to rank 7, but Capcom are releasing an update at the end of April 2021 to add more content and unlock the hunter ranks, and there’s allegedly another free update in the works for sometime later. The story is standard fare for a Monster Hunter game, but the character and village design really does stand out.
The game runs very well, with a consistent and smooth 30 fps. You’ll definitely notice minor graphical downgrades compared to World, but you are playing this surprisingly polished game on a Switch, after all.
Highly recommend for new and returning players— best enjoyed with friends.

As someone who has played this Franchise since it's PS2 days, I'm just happy to see it grow into the juggernaut I knew it could be. This game in particular was definitely designed so anyone can pick it up and play with some guidance. The Monsters, new and old, are designed beautifully and they look great whether docked or handheld. The Wirebug added something that really changes up how you can hunt and you can get real creative on how you approach your hunts. It adds a style and finesse that World gave a preview of. The New Weapon mechanics have that GenU feel that help change up how you want hunt. It also makes you want to experiment and experience every weapon. I even picked up Hunting Horn for the first time since MHF2 and the game made me like using it. The portability of the Switch makes me nostalgic for the PSP and 3DS days of Monster Hunter. It is definitely a worthy entry to the franchise. I definitely recommend it.

If you enjoyed MHW and can get over the game being on the Switch (though there is a PC release out at the time of writing this review) you will likely enjoy this great new edition to the series. Overall the game plays the same as MHW, with the primary differences being due to new items and tactics being available as opposed to mechanical changes. The story is short and simple, but that can be said about every MH game (or at least everyone that I have played so far) and not a bad thing considering the games premise (hunt and kill monsters -> make new impractical yet awesome gear -> hunt and kill more challenging monsters).

I love playing Monster Hunter Rise. I enjoyed playing Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on my Switch. Although there is currently no poogie pig pet in Monster Hunter Rise, it has the elements I loved from the previous games in the series. I love the addition of the palamute dog companions and rampage quests. I enjoy playing solo and in multiplayer with my friends. I look forward to free game updates and highly recommend this game if you are a Monster Hunter fan. It is a fun exploration hack-and-slash game with rich environments and variation of beautiful monsters to fight against to save your home. I am glad that Best Buy had the pre-order deals for each edition of this game and the game is so much fun on Nintendo Switch.

I have been playing games in the series since Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP. I have got to say that this is one of the best in the series gameplay wise. It is far more fast paced and there is less grind than ever when upgrading gear. The new monsters introduced have very cool designs, but I wish they introduced more.
A few negatives: one is that the game/story feels incomplete. There seems to be missing content that was withheld for future updates as the story abruptly ends and the weapon tree seems incomplete.
The level of challenge for veterans is very low (though I had the same problem in Monster Hunter World). I completed the main story without a game over and once I hit the 4-star quests, most monsters weren't very challenging despite my armor and weapon being relatively low leveled.
Despite most people complaining how the Switch's graphics are lower than the other consoles, it didn't really bother me even in the 720p resolution of handheld mode. However, the native 30 fps of the game was noticeable at times especially with the small flying wyverns in the snow level.
Overall I really enjoy the game and realize that most of my complaints including few new monsters will be addressed in future updates, so I won't let it detract from my experience.

This is one of the best Online switch games to play with friends.
Fun game mechanics to hunt monsters and great environments to explore in the game. Some of the battle soundtracks are good too.
One drawback is there is a bit of drag after you start the game. Tons of tutorial material and learning controls before the game picks up.
Character controls incredibly complicated. I guess it does lend to gameplay complexity but seems like the Capcom developers that make fighting games must have influenced things.

Been a huge fan of Monster Hunter since it launched on PS2. Spent hundreds of hours on Tri, 4 Ultimate, and still spend time on World: Iceborne.
To finally have a proper Switch entry with World: Iceborn like features is nearly perfect.
Maps are big and have plenty of verticality, which become fun to explore thanks the new palamutes (ridable large dog like creatures) and wire bugs (bugs that let you swing and zip around like spiderman).
Riding the palamutes allows for quick traversal while using items. When not mounted on them, they will join in fighting the monsters.
Story is cool, a bit of a step up from World's. The village's theme is back to Japanese style from portable 3rd. With beautiful oriental based soundtrack, that sets the relaxing theme in hub areas, and then gets action pumping when fighting monsters.
Fighting monsters became action based. No longer need to hunt for them, as contrary to previous games, you now always see the monsters' locations on the map.
And if staggered enough times, you can now mount the monsters for a brief amount of time to get them fighting other monsters. This adds a whole new perspective to fighting monsters, which never gets old.
Controls are great, keeping the streamlining from World.
Visuals are some of the best I have seen on the Nintendo Switch. At times the game seems even sharper than World on my base PS4, which may be due to lack of motion blur and that the framerate is locked to 30fps.
Soundtrack is great and worthy of an album (as is of every entry in series).
For anyone who suffered like me on World with the "did you finish watching the cutscene" to wait for friends to play together, this problem is solved. Simply post a quest on online hub, friends join, and you are all playing together without complications.
Nintendo Switch is also fast in loading this game. Instead of being plagued with loading screens for entering different hub areas, in Rise you can go anywhere in hub instantaneously with just a second of waiting.
Only minor gripes are with number of maps for hunting, and their size not being as massive as in World. Though they are still well designed and spacious.
Weekly events, and new free content are on track to keep this as another great addition to the series, which currently sits right next to World: Iceborn as my favorites.
This is a must buy for fans of the series, and anyone looking for an awesome coop action rpg on switch.

A solid entry with a few missteps

Let's get the bad out of the way first; The beginning assaults you with way too many tooltips and will be horribly off-putting to new players and irritating for MH:W players. This could of been smoothed out with a tutorial area and seems like a big misstep I hope they patch soon. Also layered armor crafting is missing, possibly to milk people on layered armor DLC prior to adding it but after you already add it to the series you need to keep it there and give access earlier.
Now for the good stuff; Once you get past all those poorly designed tooltips and play the game it's a lot of fun. It looks really pretty docked and even though handheld is a lil washed out color wise, the game runs at a solid frame rate with no issues. They have used lil tricks like shaders on cloth to imitate shadows and push the hardware as far as it can go.
The Wirebug is a lot of fun to swing around on once you get used to it and there is very little slowdown in the action due to the areas being appropriately sized. In the end the game seems to be a solid entry in the series with a few questionable things I hope they patch.

I've played Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and World. I gotta say this is the est of both worlds with many quality of life improvements to boot. With huge updates already done (currently at 3.0), there is certainly a ton to do. The wirebug addition here is awesome too. Never before has there been such mobility in a MH game. Monsters are faster though. I've put about 300 hours into this so far. Great game, definitely recommend. If I were to guess G-Rank updates would come out sometime next Spring. Plenty of time to get into it now.
