Customers enjoy the addictive gameplay, impressive graphics, and the large variety of weapons and monsters in Monster Hunter: World. Many appreciate the consistently added free content and the improved ease of use for new players, although some find the difficulty challenging and the story lacking. The open world is praised for its expansive feel, but a steep learning curve and the need for significant playtime are also noted. While some players find the controls require time to master, the overall experience is considered highly engaging.

Great Monster Hunter Game for returning veterans of the series and new players alike. The controls are vastly improved over previous titles. Fun, challenging, action-packed combat perfectly contrasts the somewhat boring and slow grind for items to upgrade your weapons and armor. Quests come in a few types, lengths, difficulties, and requirements. Each weapon is unique and fun in its own way. The story elements are quite weak, but sufficient enough for a Monster Hunter game. Multiplayer vastly improves the enjoyment of the game in my opinion. Would recommend to fans of Monster Hunter games, action RPGs, JRPGs, open-world games(although MHW isn't exactly open world).

Game itself is GREAT. It's not for everyone though, don't let yourself buy into the hype. You kill monsters, you get loot, you go kill more monsters. You may have to grind same monster several times. The story is moderate to poor, don't expect an epic tale. That said, it still is FUN to play. The mechanics itself is fun, and given so many types of weapons it's easy to find one that fits you.
My EXPERIENCE AT BEST BUY however was VERY poor. The sales rep did not know the steelbook and the game itself should have CAME TOGETHER, but instead, charged me TWICE. Not only that, I used my BEST BUY REWARDS, and I was NOT refunded. This is the SECOND TIME I did not get my reward money refunded, so as a warning, DON'T LET THE REP TELL YOU IT WILL BE REFUNDED, it will NOT. Tell them you want an immediate refund instead of waiting for the 7 days. But that's a BEST BUY problem, not the game, so it still deserved a 4 star, minus star just given the somewhat grind and lack of story.

Easiest Monster Hunter to get into

I have wanted to get into Monster Hunter starting with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and I just couldn't. The learning curve was very steep and the game didn't really explain the mechanics well. With Monster Hunter World, alot of that has been alleviated and it is the most beginner friendly entry. The game basically goes in this cycle: Defeat smaller monsters to craft better gear to take on stronger monsters. It's basically a boss rush type game where you have to fight monsters, learn their attacks, beat them, then collect materials to upgrade your armor and weapons. The game is multiplayer and 4 player hunts with friends is a blast. I have socked 65 hours into the game and still haven't seen everything it has to offer. Pair this with free updates and monsters and this game is worth it!

If you like games like diablo or Horizon zero dawn there is a very good chance you will enjoy this game. It's a semi-open world where every hunt feels like a boss battle. You hunt to get better gear to go on bigger hunts. There are 14 different weapons (all with their own variations) and most of them play very differently than the other. So if you don't like the play style of one just switch weapons, no need for a second character.

A stream-lined and vibrant Monster Hunter entry that gives plenty in terms of locations, monsters, weapons, and fun! Easy to pick up, hard to master, but never dull. Track and study monsters of various kinds, and find new ways to bring them down, harvest them, and use those resources to make new weapons. Use the new weapons to track down bigger monsters... you get the idea!

First MH game for me and i enjoyed the varied game play options but could be a lot to manage for a more casual gamer. More focused on game play and less about plot/story for an RPG. Proper preparation can help but no battles seemed extremely challenging once master your weapon move set and learn the monster's moves. But the grind is real.

MHW has been garnering a lot of praise, and rightfully so. It's fun, it's huge, plenty to do, and many reviews have mentioned its friendliness to newcomers.
As a newcomer myself, that last bit was important to me, and if you're new to the series, this is a great time to begin your monster hunting... with a caveat.
One needs to be fully aware of a couple of things before taking the dive.
1) it may be friendly to newcomers, but it IS an in-depth game that has a simple premise, but requires a lot of experimenting and learning from mistakes. Friendly it is, but forgiving it is not.
2) this is not a game to pop in for short bursts. It requires time when you load it up. Hunts can eat up 45 minutes, only for bad luck (close to a kill when a roaming monster stronger than the one you're hunting suddenly stumbles upon your epic battle,) to intrude and you need to begin anew.
If you enjoy "Souls" style games, MHW will be somewhat reminiscent. You'll learn from mistakes in battle or realize you chose to carry the wrong weapon for this hunt, OR realize after several attempts that you need to level your gear some and have to halt the hunt altogether while you take on sidequests to earn gear upgrade points.
MHW may feature a lot of action roleplaying fundamentals, but beneath it all is a tight tactical simulation that requires you to memorize your prey's attacks and when they'll use them, what PART of the body is weakest on them, and to save it all to memory so that if you fall, you'll return to the hunt a better hunter.
The creatures and gameworld are gorgeous- one of the few games I wish I had a PS4Pro and HDR to see it even further in depth.
But, the beauty goes beyond graphics. There's a level of immersion involved thanks to not just seeing creatures of different types interact in the wild as you explore, but even to the loot system.
Looting makes sense, in a BIG way. You can, on many creatures even cut off their tail. But, if you need a creature's tooth for an upgrade, attacking it's head to "loosen" it up will increase your odds.
Fighting a creature that breathes fire? Find a creature with natural fire immunity and hunt them until you have the materials you need. Fighting a venomous creature? Odds are those poison arrows are worth about as much as a regular arrow. Fighting a creature who can fly? Attack its wings to prevent it from taking flight.
And much of this common sense approach helps offset the MANY things that MHW WON'T be newcomer-friendly about. If you don't enjoy discovering things that many games consider necessities to teach you, then despite the reviews, it may not be for you... Unless you're willing to search the internet for.
If you have patience, if you're looking for a game and world that will keep you sucked in for untold hours, then you owe it to yourself to take those first steps into Monster Hunter World.

This is the first Monster Hunter game that I've actually spent an extensive amount of time playing. It is especially fun with others through its online multiplayer. There's something addicting about upgrading gear, crafting items, etc, in preparation to take down some monsters with your buddies.
The gameplay and graphics are great. Each weapon that I've tried so far is very unique in their controls and strategy; you're bound to find at least a few weapons that fit your play-style.
Even after completing the story campaign, there is plenty to do and have fun with. The monsters have harder modes/versions, leading to different kinds of materials for doing different upgrades/augmentations to your gear.
You can have a lot of fun playing this alone, but I usually play online with friends more than 90% of the time since I find that to be more enjoyable for me.

Monster Hunter World is a great game, but only if it fits your style. It's really just about monster hunting and developing your weapons and armor to do that better. There's not really a story and a ton of grinding and long hunts are involved.

Monster Hunter is great and it shows. Much care has been taken in bringing the world to life in its first coming to home consoles.
The learning curve is real. If you think you can just run into this game and try slashing your way through thoughtlessly, you will not make it very far.
Careful planning and learning the weapon of your choosing will greatly affect your experience with this game. There's a reason why there are so many MH fans in the world, and this game is what the people wanted.
You will need patience while learning the game, but once you know what you're doing, you'll lose countless hours without realizing it.

I'm new to monster hunter so I cant comment on how this game compares to the older titles but I will say the multiplayer aspect was the highlight for me. Get 3 of your friends together and slay a wide variety of monsters! The main game play loop is pick a mission, hunt, fight, and kill monsters with a weapon of your choice (their are dozens of them),loot resources not only from the monster that you killed but also within the environment, bring resources back to base camp to craft better weapons, armor, etc, repeat. It can get repetitive doing this solo after awhile but bring a couple of buddies with you and its a blast to play. I highly recommend.

This game is amazing! As someone who's never played a Monster Hunter before I was really excited to play this one on PS4. The combat is deep, and fun. There's tons of free additional content released by the devs. (crossover with Witcher 3 going on right now) The progression is a little weird, but I think that's just because I'm not used to the Monster Hunter progression format yet. Either way, I've only had this game for about a month and I've put over 100 hours into it. It'll be one I play for a very long time in the future. Oh, and Iceborne DLC is coming, so if you're at all interested, jump in now and increase your hunter rank before that drops so you can enjoy all the new content right away.

I have clocked over 300 hours in this game and have just beat the story. I play this game pretty regularly with a group of gamer friends and we have yet to get bored of it. The multiplayer is weird and hard to get used to at first, but you adapt to it pretty quickly. This game is unique in the sense that you can play solo or co-op at pretty much any time. It makes you feel less tethered to your friends. You can go off and farm for materials while your friend eats some food and then jump back into a mission when they're back. Pretty cool. I should also note that I have not played any of the previous titles and found that while the story was pretty bland, the gameplay was enough to keep me playing :)

My brothers and I had been looking for a four player game to enjoy online together. We tried Destiny 1, and were massively let down by that stink fest of a game. Needless to say we passed on Destiny 2 and settled on giving this game a try.
It's a series that's been around for a long time and none of us had ever played it before. The game over all is fun. The story is awful. The menus are awful. The online system is awful. The voice acting is laughable.
But the game is fun. I do recommend it, and given how popular the game currently is hopefully they listen to fan feedback and make some much needed improvements (it's way too hard to join friends on missions sometimes)

The streamlined multiplayer makes every monster approachable regardless of skill level the combat is a slight step backwards in terms of proficiency because of the omnidirectional moveset with no variation due to Capcom not bringing back arts and styles. The movement and open maps on the other hand bring the game back to modern times and the new environmental effects from landscapes and monster attacks add more to the experience. Monsters can also fight eachother in turf wars doing your job for you.
Customization outside of DLC on the other hand is sub-standard in this release due to the small monster roster.

MH:W is a great game. The combat is intense and fun. The updates to the various weapon mechanics are phenomenal (the hammer especially). The quality of life changes from the old games make it so much more pleasant to play. Yes in some regards that makes it 'easier' but really that comes from it being less frustrating in stupid ways.
Paintballs are gone, tracking now comes from finding signs of creatures and studying them. So you don't have to spend needless time roaming the map. Yes previously it was more 'difficult' and by difficult I mean 'boring and time consuming'. Now you still need to find them, and sometimes that means running across other things you need to deal with, but it's much more direct.
Whetstones are infinite now. I kind of get the complaint here, there's less punishment if you're...bad at aiming I guess? Like you hit the hard shell you can't get through too much? and so you can't run out of whetstones and screw yourself out of being able to complete a mission. But...all that really did was punish new players learning how the game works, which is dumb. And as a mechanic you still have to find time to be able to use your whetstone.
etc... etc... etc...
If you're a new player looking at reviews be careful what you're reading as a lot of the negative reviews are just people being salty that they had to walk up hill both ways when they went to school. The game is still tough, just not as frustrating.
The one major negative about the game, and I expect this is something that will get fixed, is the load times can be bad. Doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the game, but it can certainly be annoying.
And hey, if you're an old MH gamer and really hate World for not being the same exact game we've gotten for a decade wait until next month and you'll have XX on Switch/3DS.

Cons
Little or confusing tutorials on certain aspects of the game.
Tons of fun, especially with friends, although that's not required.
The various weapons are each super different offering tons of different play styles. If you don't like sword and shield, try bow and arrow, it the sword axe.
There will be some confusion with partying, squads, and some crafting that the game does a poor job at explaining, but it's worth the effort.
I haven't played a game as much as this in a long time. Even at work I can't wait to go home and play some more.

This is possibly the best game Capcom has put out this generation. Returning to consoles for the first time in years this is the most accessible game for newcomers and yet never forgets the core experience for core players. MH looks the best it ever has with current gen graphics, and open world and improved AI with the monsters as they react to nature it many different ways. This is the BEST time to jump into Monster Hunter.

First time player to the Monster Hunter games. Great gameplay, graphics, and challenging. Nothing is more fun than having to hunt monster so that you can create new gear. What makes it even more fun is hunting with a friend.
Plenty of weapons are offered that cater to your play style. Replay-ability is extremely high. game is consistently changing and makes games like Destiny look like nothing. Free content is consistently added. Limited time gear keeps the players coming back for more.
Great game.
