Takes good shots for the price.
Even with the VR on, I noticed the images not as sharp at 200mm handheld. WIth tripod, image quality was very good.
Makes a great companion to the stock 18-55mm Kit lens.
Great lens for someone new in DSLR photography.

I have not had for long but it has worked well for getting shots from a distance. I went to a civil war reenactment and could do great shots from a distance!

I recently got into amateur photography in a serious way. I bought a DSLR, got a prime lens (50mm for portraits), and took a lot of great shots with the lens that came with the camera (18-55mm). However, there were plenty of times when the kit lens just couldn't get in close enough for the shot I wanted, and I decided to round out my amateur photography set with a zoom lens that wasn't going to break the bank.
I mostly take outdoor shots to capture architecture, landscapes, kids sporting events, etc. These shots typically happen when the lighting conditions are pretty good. So, I haven't experienced any issues with the lens's aperture setting not being as big as some of the more expensive lenses that are available.
For lower light situations, I just make sure I have my tripod handy, and I slow down the shutter speed to compensate for the smaller aperture and the need to get more light into the camera for the proper exposure. For me the trade-off between price and inconvenience is a no-brainer because the only low light shots I'm ever taking might be of landscapes or monuments (and they aren't moving anywhere).
It auto focuses pretty quickly, and most importantly, it takes great shots. It's an all plastic lens, so it's pretty light, but with that comes the trade-off of the lens not feeling all that sturdy. That doesn't mean that it isn't sturdy, it just doesn't "feel" that way to me.
The only real weakness of this lens is its ability to take action shots in low light. If you are looking to capture night shots for "street photography" where lighting conditions aren't great, then this might not be the lens for you (but I wouldn't be using a zoom lens in that situation anyway). However, If you're looking for a zoom lens that gives you great value, this is it. This zoom lens is perfect for 99% of the people out there for nearly all of the shots they're ever going to be taking with a zoom lens.

I bought this lens today to compliment my 18-55mm and its a great lens!
Most of my work is done under studio conditions, so the zoom range is perfect. It is easy to use, quiet and very smooth in it's operation.
The VR Vibration Reduction is a great feature well worth the price difference with the non VR model.
It does what I need it to do and more.
The picture quality is amazing!

The VR functions are just one of the jewels in the crown for the D-5000 and the 55-200mm zoom lens.
The 55-200mm VR lens is a must have and shoots absolutely stunning longer shots. It captures incredible detail at the max. What is amazing is it's so light on the camera body. The entire rig is very easy to handle.
I am so pleased with this bundled rig for my first digital SLR. It will probably be the last killer camera that I'll ever buy...or need.

This VR zoom lens was part of a really great priced bundled package I bought with the Nikon D3000- I couldn't be more pleased with this lens. I have finally taken some images with it and I am serioulsy amazed at the overall ease of use and incredible images it has produced. Also, it is nice and lightweight-which compliments the D3000 perfectly! This is definitely a worthwhile lens to have.

I just bought the package deal with this extra lens for a trip in Europe. Worked great and I love my pictures! I found it easy to use and simple to flip from manual to automatic focus when needed. Make sure you get the VR lenses as they make it much easier to take pictures without needing a tripod.

Great lens to have in your collection

This is a great lens to have in anyone's collection, novice or professional, alike. This lens will do anything that you ask of it. I bought this lens to add to my collection that I just recently decided to improve upon. I am always doing something with my dog outdoors or traveling all over the place so I needed a lens that could do all I asked of it, and so far, this lens has not let me down. I managed to take some pictures of my dog jumping all over the place and in the most awkward positions and I did NOT lose ANY details. That impressed me more than I can possibly explain.
If you require a lens that will get some decent zoom, this lens will work for you. If you are looking for a lens that can keep up with moving objects, frame for frame, this lens will definitely NOT let you down. I took my dog to the park and made him jump in the air and run etc and this lens took great pictures of him without losing the slightest bit of detail. I also took this lens with me to Europe, recently, and was able to take good pictures of the buildings. Sometimes it seemed to take a little bit more of attention on my part to focus in on objects that were far away, but once I got it, it produced good results, but being honest, I am still learning, so please don't judge my pictures or opinion too harshly.
I'm just trying to figure out why I cannot change the aperature levels on the lens with my Nikon D3200. I do not know if it is a compatibility issue with my body vs lens or if it is just an error on my own part. Either way, I am very satisfied with this lens and I think that it is a pretty decent versatile lens that should be in everyone's collection.

Best zoom lens for the money

This is the best lens you can get for the price! I agree with the other reviews and partly used them in buying this lens. It has the ability to zoom and take very close up pics from a long distance. I am constantly photographing deer and fox squirrels where i work and it does a fantastic job taking very close up pics of them! The image stabilization works really good and makes even the shakiest pics look great. The ONLY catch that just slightly bothers me about this lens, but definitely no big deal, is that the lens is easily moved if pulled or pushed on other than turning the focus with your hand. For example if you pull on the end even lightly it will pull the lens all the way out to full zoom. But you can avoid that by simply not pulling or pushing on it, lol.

This is my first D3100 SLR digital Camera. The kit came with the Nikkor Len Af-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mme f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR. Wow it takes some really awsome zoom pictures. I got some pictures of birds in flight. Could not wait to share them with friends and family. Did losts of reserch on the D3100 and lens that came with them. And Best Buy had the best price, for a camera and lens kit. Just with I would of gotten the next step up with the 70-300mm lens.

As a DSLR novice, I must say that I am completely blown away by Nokia's presentation. My last digital camera was a coolpix 2200 and since then, I've been using my iPhone so that should tell you something. I got this lens as an additional lens with my D3000 so I didn't even have to pay the retail price. With that said, IT'S AWESOME!!!!!! I took some pics this past Saturday of the tree at Rockefeller center at night and this baby didn't fail to produce. Even with a frigid night and an unstable trigger finger because of numbness, it took care of business. This lens should be the first additional lens bought by any Nokia user. Like I said, I'm a novice but this baby makes me feel like a Pro!

I bought this lens when i was really wanting a 300mm but i just cant afford it at the time. I figured i would like it but it just wouldnt pull the image in near as close as i want. WRONG. Its a great lens and it really does a super job with long distant shots, focus is fast, could be faster but is sufficient. I will say this, now i am rethinking the 300mm. In the photos attached i was a considerable distance from the subject, i was quite impresed with the zoom.

I wanted a zoom lens for my nikon 5200 that would be able to handle swim meets and ballet performances for my daughters' activities . So far it meets my expectations. I do have concerns about low light conditions and I haven't had the opportunity to try that out yet. I really wanted the 300mm but couldn't stomach the extra $150 right now. We just got back from a trip to the Grand Canyon and it did magnify quite a bit. It is about the same size as my original lens and is light weight and easy to exchange.
